Jim's Discount Tire & Brake
If there was an option for no stars i would have picked it. I went in to get two new front tires put on sometime in june it is now october and only 20000 miles later on 60000 mile tires and they are worn so bad the belt is showing on one and almost the other. So I went back to have them replace those tires on warranty and all they did was give me the run around and acted like I was stupid. The fat rude woman at the front desk kept asking for proof of when i got an alignment and trying to bs me and after I went and got proof by going to firestone and getting a copy of the reciept they said I would have to take it up with the manufacturer only because they don't want to honor their warranty. In the end I found out they never balanced them which is part of the job thats why they call it mount and balance. They are not a trustworthy business I will never go back or recommend them to anyone. If you want good tires at a decent price and a warranty with no hassle go to walmart and get some good year tires.

After leaving work tonight, I noticed my car was pulling really hard to the left, and was making a "thumping" nose. Sure enough, my tire was completely flat. I stopped at Northtown Automotive, they were about to close and could not fix the flat however , they did air up the tire, and recommended I drive to Goodyear on Swift Ave. They too were about to close and couldn't fix the tire . I was then told to try Jim's Discount Tires on Armour. I drove to Jim's and my heart sank when I saw their closing time was 5:00 pm-it was now 5:05. I went into the store, explained my problem to them, and even though they were "closed", not one, but two gentlemen took the tire off, and checked the tire for the source of the flat. The crazy part was, they could not find a hole and after checking and re-checking for about 20 minutes, checked the other three tires, and sent me on my way. I was told to come back in the morning if it went flat again, and they would give me a ride to work! These people went above and beyond to help me out, seemed really concerned, and would take no payment for their trouble!Thank you Jim's Discount Tires, you have a new customer, and I can't tell you enough how much it meant to me that you stayed to take care of me after being turned away twice before. Chivalry is not dead after all!

I am new to NKC and had some rather serious tire and front end alignment issues. I knew they were there but not nearly as bad as they turned out to be. So, by pressing and immediate necessity moreso than desire, I reluctantly took my car to Jim's after learning of their shop right here in NKC on Armour, and driven by there so many times for the 2+ years even prior to living in NKC. In fact, they are so close I can even walk there to leave or pick up my car. That's nice!Long story short: the two front balljoints and pitman arm assembly as well as tires had to be replaced, right then. Despite my current financial situation with a move just two weeks prior and other pressing expenses I was dealing with, we came up with a game plan of attack, prioritized as I could not do it all at once financially, and they not only did excellent work above and beyond what I expected, but Jim and his staff, especially Nannette, proved that there still is something in this day and age called "customer service and care." I have found my car place now, and they will be my #1 in helping me maintain and take care of my 2001 Blazer, which is still going strong and looking pretty darn good for its age. But then again, when you try taking care of thigns, that will help them last longer as well. Very good people, very straightforward honesty and very good work ethic. You cannot go wrong with Jim's and his staff!Thank you Jim, Nanette and staff - I will definitely see you soon for "phase 2" and the tires we spoke of.

My first visit Jim's, found them through Google! Overall was an excellent experience. Major clutch and other work done on my Mini on short notice over 2 days. Work had to be completed because we were taking a long trip immediately after the repair work. I asked them to do a thorough road test after the work to make sure no surprises on the road. Happy to report after the trip that the car worked perfectly, and the overall experience with Jim's Discount Tire & Brake was wonderful. Highly recommend.

Don't ever use Jims discount tire and brake service. Today I tried to have Jims discount tire and brake service install a set of 24" tires on a set of wheels and them put them on my truck. After getting no help unloading the tires they had an employee help unload my wheels. He dropped the first one about 6 inches from the ground, which made me pause out of concern. I moved the second wheel myself. He then tossed the third box with a wheel in it straight to the ground. He damaged my wheel in the process. I figured the guy was having a bad day and didn't report it to his manager or the owner at the time because I was being nice and didn't know it damaged the wheel. 2 hours later they proceed to tell me that low and behold one of the wheels is not straight and true. They say it must have been damaged during shipping. I then try to explain to them how their guy just tossed the wheel in the box. The lady who works the desk was not in the garage at the time, yet she was confident and adamant that she knew what happened. She didn't let me explain anything before getting very testy with me. I then told her, she needs to let me speak. She doesn't know what happened because she was not there. Her explanation makes no sense as she was trying to tell me where the wheel hit when her employee tossed it... It was in a box and landed awkwardly. You can not see in the box to know exactly where the wheel hit. After all of this they kicked my truck out and actually refused to refund me the money I had paid upfront for them to mount the wheels on the truck. They must need the 10 dollars more than I can imagine. They then threaten to call my boss because they know where I work. These people are scum. If you don't buy your wheels from them they will attempt to damage yours, to make you purchase them through them. The lady behind the counter was nice enough to offer to throw away my original 24" wheels that were almost brand new..... Obviously she knows they are worth a couple thousand dollars and she wouldn't be throwing them away, she would sell them.

I was receiving a "check engine" error that had been "fixed" by one shop, looked at by two others (including the dealership!), each with a different opinion on what needed fixed ranging in the hundreds to over a 1K to fix. Jim's Discount Tire & Brake found the RIGHT problem, and fixed it for less than $100 all in less time it took for others to even run diagnostics.Jim is honest, open, and he even waited past closing time for me to arrive to pick up my car one day when I was running late (thanks again Jim)! I drive out of my way to come to his shop and he's one of the easiest and nicest people to work with.

My 1990 Honda Civic had a tune-up and the car ran better than ever - I could tell the difference...and then I needed a new starter and alternator - the car was starting intermittently. They showed me how they diagnosed it and fixed it while I waited....(It's not like they didn't have other business, either.).. I used their wifi to work on my laptop while I waited. Plus the guys in the garage sing while they work - an added bonus. A nice place with nice people.
Tips & Advices
Among the common scams pulled are needless repairs, where a garage charges you for work that isn't necessary. Another popular one is attracting customers through a cheap oil change or tire pressure check. Then, when you your car is being repaired, they give you a long list of other corrections they'd like to make, therefore boosting the total cost of your bill. The best way to combat these types of problems is getting a written estimate before work is done so you can see how much repairs are expected to cost. If the final bill is higher than the estimate projected, ask to specifically see the work. Make sure information is put in writing as well. If a problem remains, you can have proof that work was not done to your satisfaction.
For winter driving, features such as the defroster, heater and exhaust system are paramount. Look in your owner's manual for specific directions on how features should be checked and repaired. Many newer cars have a cabin air filter that can be replaced when needed, allowing warm air to continue to flow in. Also, check tires before winter driving, as they need to be at the proper pressure to perform well on snow and ice.
In the spring and summer, you want to be sure your air conditioner and cooling systems work correctly. Given the high temperatures, overheating is a common problem. Look over the system by ensuring there is enough coolant available. If it needs to be refilled, it is best to open the hood and add more to the car before it gets too warm out. Also, clean out fan ducts and other ventilation sources necessary for summertime driving.
Some fixes to your car can be done without paying a specialist. Issues like replacing oil and air filters are relatively simple, with instructions provided in the owner's manual on how to make these changes. The same goes for replacing broken windshield wipers or burnt-out headlights. Such issues should be repaired quickly to guarantee safety, but don't require a visit to a garage.
Yes. Not every type of auto repair work needs to be done by a certified mechanic. You can fix some of a vehicle's issues just by paying attention to how the automobile is running and having a basic understanding of auto repair. Look over the ways weather may impact your car and what preventative measures you can take to avoid having to take it into the shop.
