General InfoIn July 2007, New York welcomes Johnny Utah's, the urban cowboy experience, to Rockefeller Center. The Johnny Utah's experience begins with cuisine full of flavors & spices which embody the real meaning of Southwestern food. With hearty recipes of our cultural ancestors, Johnny Utah's offers a menu full of zesty Texan BBQ ribs, savory steak fajitas, & authentic Mexican tequila. Almost every seat in the house has a view of the dining room's main attraction, Manhattan's only mechanical bull. Showcasing the full essence of the Southwestern theme, the beast is theatrically surrounded with cascading metal chains & burning candles that echo "rings of fire," signifying the celebration of the icon. The interior was designed as an interpretation of an old western mining shaft with salvaged antique tiles & pony-hide furniture. Johnny Utah's is a place where the music's always pumping and the drinks are always flowing. We have redefined the urban cowboy experience through our unique promotions and promiscuous atmosphere. Cowgirls, cowboys and rock stars of all kinds are encouraged to come in and get wild.

My best friend surprised me for my birthday and made reservations for us. When we arrived, we did stand out because we are people of color. And I dont say that to sound as though that was a problem because its not. Im a black woman and my best friend is a dark skinned spanish woman. When we got to the host, my bff gave her her name. The host looked @ us then her list and said it wasnt there. My bf planned this ahead of time because, like I said, it was my birthday. My bf explained this to her and she still claimed it was not there. She asked if she could just pay for a tix and was told they were sold out. All of this could have been fiven the benifit of the doubt if we didnt witness ppl getting tix from the host and entering. We didnt want to automatically think we were denied because of our race but we were dressed appropiately, so we cant think of any other reason. It was very embarrassing and hurtful, especially to my friend who planned it for us. This is 2012, I didnt know places were still that racist.
I'm not picky when it comes to bars/restaurants but this place was AWFUL. The place has some great potential but is run horribley. The service, the atmosphere, and the attitude put together makes this place more of an infuriating hassel than a good time. What really did it for me seeing how the place was run. The managers were incompetent, unhelpful, and some of the rudest people I've ever seen operating a business. Save your money and go someplace else. Even drinking out of a paper bag on the curb would have more class than this place.
This is a rael tourist trap! $20 tab before they will take plastic. Bartenders are sloooow. Could not accomodate 15 people with a table or tables. Could not drink in ""eating area""
If you're looking to drink and have a good time with some friends at the bar...forget it. 3 or 4 deep with wanna-be jr. executives and their stories how they missed the deal of the day! They just stand there nursing a cosmo or mojito, eyeing the blondes that frequent this place. Better off walking two blocks west and grabbing a seat at a real NYC ""mom & pop"" saloon.
This place is really cool and I must say riding the bull is quite the entertaining. I went here with a large group from work and we had a list at the door, setup by AccessGotham. com.
We were a group of 20 or so and we had a waitress and were placed in a nice location inside. All in all we were given the royal treatment the moment we stepped on line til we left.
I decided to be the first to ride the bull and I got tossed almost instantly but it was so much fun. Great after work place!
Johnny Utah's is one of the best places to start off a night in the city. Usually my friends and I setup up an open bar there through AccessGotham. com.
All the girls love riding the mechanical bull and it's quite entertaining watching them do so. The bartenders are all friendly and extremely cute.
The music is excellent too and overall the place has solid vibes.
$20 cover charge on Saturday night???? For what???
Mechanical bull in Midtown - it's definitely a fun idea. Problem is the attitude of the people running it. There was a line waiting to ride, but the staff only took ladies in short skirts, and black people. I get that we all want look at the ladies, but -- some fairness please? This is not an exclusive club.
I want two hours of my life and my $20 back!
Pretty good for after work drinks. A little too crowded at times, but at least if you go, you'll probably have a good time.
My friends joined me for a night on the bull and were so disappointed when they were told that the bar was at capacity and they could not be admitted in. This was acceptable I guess but I was already inside and it was less than full with empty tables all over and plenty of room. Also, several GROUPS of caucasian people walked by and was admitted without fault when I joined my friends on the outside.
The explanation was that they were at capacity. I feel like they had reached their african-american capacity and I defer to racism as a reason for anything. It just seems odd that though there are minority employees, they were prescriptive about how many of us they would admit into the bar.
Disappointing but I will try again before I conclude that they're racist.
I actually only went here because my friend and I saw a dressed up person in a bull outfit and saw the signing that said, ""Nightly bull riding"" and we had to go!
You didn't need money or anything to get in and ride the bull. Money was only for drinks and food.
If you don't want food and/or drinks, it's free. So I'm always for that! It was 8pm and PACKED. You could hardly walk in there. But I will be going there for my next b-day and every other time I'm in NYC. I rode the bull and enjoyed it. It was awesome! Great experience and fulfilled something on my bucket list. ""Riding a mechanial bull"". :-)
Juniors Desserts + Bull Riding + Happy Hour Prices + Sliders + Girls + Fajitas + Music = BEST PLACE EVER. I love Johnny Utah's and it's my new favorite place.
