House Of High Fidelity
Long in business, but hard to see why. Took in costly old Lenco turntable to be checked out to use to transfer LPs to mp3s. Knew it needed new power cord (replace European plug with U.S.) and new RCA connector red/white plugs. Agreed to pay $65 checkup charge. Specifically asked for phone call estimate if more expense required as did not think the transferring all that vital in my sphere of activity. Told it would take week for estimate, and spent half-hour with elderly shop owner (I think) instructing younger (but not that much) new guy in how to type my name and address into the repair order. Finally gave up on instruction after he "prepared" order with middle name instead of last name. Two days later got call saying turntable was ready and total bill $146.34 !!!???***%%% In shop yelled that no one had called with an estimate. Told, yes, someone did. (No one did, of course.) Also old guy said bill was only $110.00. Then he noticed that the invoice listed that much for "Technician bench labor flat rate for type of equipment." Second page of invoice listed $17.55 for ''RCA cable, power cable" and (get this)!) "shop supplies, solder, clean fluid towels, swabs." I asked the old guy, "you're charging me for a couple of q-tiips and paper towels?" He said, "well, we have to buy them." Invoice says "Tech replaced power cable and RCA cable, cleaned the drive idler, platter and motor shaft. USB capture device tested okay." It also noted motor is 50Hz so turntable runs fast." Have brought turntable home, but not yet tried it out of fear it is in same no-sound condition it was...and I'm out roughly $150.

Tips & Advices
Employers must conduct all required training in a language and vocabulary that workers can understand. Training must demonstrate the hazards of operating certain machinery, like stone cutters and splitters, as well as how to use them appropriately. It's important to verify that your landscape contractor has taken the necessary steps to fully train its personnel and that the appropriate safety precautions are in place.
Check the specific regulations for your area, and verify that your contractor has the necessary licenses. These may include a state contractor's license, pesticide license, CDL driver's license and license to sell and purchase nursery stock.
Landscape work is not cheap, so it's in your best interest to make sure that it's done to your requirements and that you get the best contractor to do the job. Homeowners should know how much they'll need to pay for the contractor's service as well as how they will be billed for this work. Ask about any design fees, if quoted prices are fixed or estimates, and what the payment process will be. Clarifying these items in the beginning will prevent any surprise expenses.
Yes. Homeowners should require that the contractor submit certificates verifying compliance with safety, insurance, workers' compensation and drug and alcohol testing programs. This will give you peace of mind that the contractor has gone through all the steps under industry regulations.
Yes. Every good contractor should have a list of recently completed jobs that you can see in their portfolio. They should also have a list of references that you can contact, or properties that you can see in person.
