Gardner Law Office
I spoke to a number of lawyers in Charleston, Georgetown, and Myrtle Beach before finding gold! These first communications were rude, short, and couldn't help me. One claimed they could but only if I paid a ton of money. I looked online and found Mr. Cheevin "Lex" Gardner. I called and was greeted by a friendly voice who took my information. The paralegal who spoke to me was understanding and extremely friendly. She acknowledged I had a difficult immigration case but it was not hopeless. Less than an hour later, Attorney Gardner called me back. He asked questions none of the others thought to ask and was very respectful. When I met him at his office, the staff was friendly, knowledgeable and professional. They even asked if I minded the company of their therapy dog. She was small but oh so much comfort for my wife. We are still working with Lex to get our immigration issue settled but he has walked us through everything and kept us very informed. We are just waiting on the government now.

Gardner Law Office
I moved down to South Carolina last year and had trouble with my landlord shortly after. I was living in a house with roommates. We were paying rent and utilities without issue. About three months in, the landlord sold the house out from under us without saying a word. Suddenly we were told that we had to leave the house immediately, which violated the lease. None of us made enough to pay a huge deposit on a new place. Thinking we were going to be homeless, someone at work recommended Gardner Law. We thought it was a long shot but Lex Gardner was able to get us more than we could ever expect. He was wonderful and handled things quickly and efficiently.

Ferguson Law Firm
I went to Ferguson law firm as my friend recommended this place. I was looking for a new attorney as my current one didn't do a good job. After sitting in the office and talking to attorney at Ferguson, she didn't want to take my case as it was DSS custody metter, she didn't want to deal with nasty DSS system of SC. In fact, she picked up a phone and called my current attorney and told him that I am in her office and she will send me back to him. She put phone on speaker and made me talk to him. Very unprofessional and uncomfortable situation. Will not recommend anybody this firm as they don't know how to treat their clients. Thanks for your time!

Gardner Law Office
Attorney Lex Gardner is extremely trustworthy and knowledgeable. He is thorough and honest with his clients. If he doesn't think it will work, he will tell you but he also looks at other options available. I went to him for Bankruptcy and was worried about judgment. I had gone to another attorney for a consultation and was treated like dirt. Mr. Gardner was a true gentleman. He understood my situation and was there for me from start to finish. Whenever I had any questions, he or his team would answer quickly. I would recommend Lex for anyone going through the stress of debt and bankruptcy.

Gardner Law Office
I saw their ad is the Advertising Unlimited paper and decided to use them for my Bankruptcy! Best decision ever. They were kind, helpful, and extremely informative. They made the anxiety attacks and stress disappear completely. (It also helped they have a small dog there sometimes...it was a great therapy animal). I would strongly recommend Gardner Law in the future to anyone!

Long & Millsaps PA
I used this firm for a real estate transaction. The paralegal, Cindy, that handled everything between Ohio and SC not only met the deadlines but was able to move it forward four days for me. She was fabulous and made me so comfortable with the remote process. The attorney, Shannon, was great at closing and I highly recommend this firm for real estate transactions.

Tips & Advices
When it comes time to choose a lawyer, you should start by searching close to home. If you do have attorneys you are familiar with, ask who they believe would be best for you. After going through personal references - especially from individuals who had similar needs - you should broaden your search through public information resources. You can call your area's attorney referral service or check legal organizations like Martindale-Hubbell. There are other resources available online, such as yellowpages.com. You can check websites for client reviews and other third-party forms of approval.
If you sign documents and you come across a word you don't recognize, or you need help to navigate important employment or real estate paperwork. Also, during times when personal matters intersect with legal proceedings, you might need to have an advocate to prevent your emotions from getting in the way. If you've been accused of a crime or are in a terrible financial situation, you can find an attorney who will work with what you have available.
When you hire a lawyer, you're agreeing to work with someone over a certain period of time. The more forthcoming the lawyer appears to be with individual needs, the better.
  • You need to ask questions about how the attorney will communicate with you and what responsibilities you hold in the relationship.
  • The attorney should let you know the best channel for quick communication and you need to inform him or her when you want updates.
  • You should also ask questions to get to know the attorney as an individual in order to ensure this is a person you can trust. Ask about their legal philosophy and how he or she views the lawyer/client relationship. Ask as how to keep fees down or what daily disruptions you should expect from a long legal battle.
You need to ask about every possible fee that will come up when working with an attorney. You should request a list of all costs in advance so you won't be surprised by additional expenses like overhead. Also determine exactly when you will start being billed. You want to inspect paperwork carefully. If the attorney charges you for his or her experience, you need to make sure he or she will perform tasks personally and not hand it off to an assistant. Find out if the attorney has a flat fee or charges by the hour. Many civil lawyers work on contingency. Make inquiries about how the lawyer plans to provide service for your money and what you can do if you start to feel unsatisfied with his or her performance.
You can ask how many similar cases they have handled and if they have special skills or training that applies specifically to your needs. Lawyers can't mention clients by name, but you should ask for basic details about identical past cases. You should check their office for the appropriate certifications and diplomas. You can also ask how long he or she has practiced law and request information that demonstrates the practice's success. Look for precise details such as percentage of cases settled out of court.
