House Of Pies
Since our charming Angelz coffee shop closed (replaced by some truly icky "gourmet" food outfit) I haven't been able to find a replacement that combines good food and reasonable prices. I've tried to "bond" with HOP but it's been a fail more often than not. I will list the problems in order of greatest annoyance: 1. the atmosphere. I hate the counter. It's like having breakfast in a high chair for a baby. One need not be seated on a precipice, thank you. 2. the waiters and waitresses are mostly nice, but often harried and they radar their work drama too much to the customer. It's like watching a reality show set in a coffee shop sometimes. That is not friendly pleasantry or banter, it's torture. 3.the food is a real crap shoot. Breakfast is fairly lousy here; take the extra mile and go the Astro for a good breakfast. Frozen hash browns? YUKK! The omelettes are okay but pricy. Their version of anything Mexican is really bad, don't bother. They do have a really good fresh roasted turkey sandwhich, and a good burger, but the fires are generic and ho-hum. And the tab fails to please; too high for such mediocrity! 4. They seem to get a lot of return business from neighborhood folks, elders, and...unfortunately... families with shrieking children. I left with a half headache one morning; it was like eating in a day care for pre-schoolers. Which brings us around to what they are really selling: pie. order it, pick it up, take it home. They have a convenient location in their favor, but this is one House that is rarely in order. There is also a most unpleasant Asian woman of sour demeanour who seems to be the manager; warning: she can't handle criticism. I don't plan to spend much time in this House. There are 2 better options within a couple miles east or west (Astro and The Dunes on Sunset) with better food.

Trader Joe's
Oh Trader Joe's....I love you. But I hate you. Shopping at TJ's during normal working people's available shopping hours (any time on the weekends or after 5pm on weekdays) is just awful. It's h#ll on earth with reasonably priced organic produce. Don't get me wrong, the staff are friendly and helpful and I love the merchandise and the prices, but dear god....from the aneurysm inducing parking lot to the panic attack inducing aisles, it can be quite the clusterfxck. Seriously, after last night's shopping trip I felt like I needed a drink. Or a Valium. Hell, I could have used both. If you have the luxury of being able to do your shopping at 2pm on a random Wednesday, take advantage of this. You'll be able to browse all the great products at your leisure. But if you go on weekends or weeknights, forget it. You need to have a plan. You need to know your list by heart as there is nowhere to stop for 10 seconds to make sure you're not forgetting anything. You cannot stop to check the dates on produce. Can't decide between regular feta & the reduced fat version? TOO BAD. Keep it moving or else you'll p!ss everyone off. This can be a problem because some of the produce isn't as fresh as it should be. On numerous occasions I've had to throw out produce because I realized it was moldy when I brought it home. Examples of this are the pomegranate seeds and raspberries. If you have the time, really look at it to make sure it's fresh enough to last a few days. The prices and selection keep me coming back. I just wish the store had wider aisles and a bigger parking lot.

Taco Flame
Fun family environment and great food! We ordered Flame Burgers this time. Very juicy and delicious burgers on special buns. We also ordered 3 orders of fries and three baskets full of home-made fresh cut fries were served; two orders would have been enough for the 4 of us. The desert was excellent too, we ordered churros and a special ice cream that was rolled in delicious crispy flakes and served a soft fried sugary dough. Very happy with the quality of the food.Very clean and modern environment. When signing my credit card on the screen I was able to enter my cell phone number and a receipt was texted to me.Service was A+. The chef was going around between orders and asking if everyone was enjoying their meal. A few large-screen TV's, we watched the Dodgers game during our meal. Then the kids went to their play room and had the time of their life with video games, other electronic games, basketball hoops, Foosball, etc, while my wife and I sat in the beautiful balcony and relaxed. The kids wanted to do something special on a summer afternoon and this worked out perfectly. Two thumbs up!

Vons
Thanks to Vons, I have actually decided grocery shopping can be a pleasant task, rather than a frenetic ordeal. The store is neat and organized, but what's most impressive is the staff. I was asked if I needed any help at least 4 times on my last visit, and this has consistently been their style, which is much appreciated. If you are uncertain about buying something in the produce section, they even offer a sample if you wish. The prices seem reasonable, the selection is fine, and they offer an organic line of foods as well as all the processed stuff. You can grab some hot food to go, a sandwich, soup, or Starbucks. It's all there, and I like that they encourage people to use re-useable shopping bags instead of plastic, which I do. (They sell 'em at the registers.) I like to go early on weekend mornings when it's mellower and not like a shopping cart version of Bumper Cars. The only reason I might not give Vons a full 5 stars is that the Vons card "savings" seem a bit meager, but I suppose it might be more impressive if I had a family the size of The Brady Bunch.

Cafe Beaujolais
Our visit to Cafe Beaujolais was by happenstance - my wife and I were on our way from Pasadena to Santa Monica for a xmas party, but wound up stuck on the Glendale 5S for over 30 minutes before deciding to abort the westside foray. On our way back through Eagle Rock on local streets, we decided to salvage the night out by swinging by a french bistro I've heard a few times but never had a reason to stop by at until now!The best about Cafe Beaujolais is the atmosphere - it's as authentic as one can get. It's in a bit gritty neighborhood, walk-ins only, and the dark interior is plastered with '20s french movie posters and blaring Forget Paris soundtrack ;-). And all the waiters speak French. OK food - it's good. We got the duck pate (congealed innards is always fabulous), rainbow trout (awesome sauce) and steak fritte (this was a bit of a letdown - authentic, but a bit disappointing on the quality of meat). And for dessert, of course: creme brule. The service was friendly and well coordinated, and overall the experience was tres bien!

Trader Joe's
I have been going to Trader JoeJoe's oh for a very very long time. But I have never seen any of the workers go out of there way the way socks does (i mean tirzah) go out of way for all her customers. That girl is so amazing. Oh she is a god set to that company. I love see her talking to her. She does listen to what you have to say and she remembers Cause when see you again no matter if its a day or 3 years laters she always asks how did everything go. She is one last true good person in this world and very respectable un like some of those workers over there. Oh and i love her socks. So don't ever get rid of her cause if you do I will never step foot back into another Trader Joe's again. Like i did said before some of those workers over there are so rude. Also some of the mangers are also mostly the women. They are so fake. I wasn't going to go back into this anymore. But then they hired Tirzah and now I won't leave cause of her thank you Trader Joe's for hiring her.

Cafe Beaujolais
I went here on a Wednesday night, and we came before the rush. A surprisingly busy restaurant for a weekday, but it could be that families were enjoying holiday dinners too. They brought out french baguette pieces for us to eat while we wait for our food. The bread seemed a little stale. My fiance and I shared a french onion soup to start with. It was a bit too vinegary and tangy for my taste. Usually, french onion soup has more beef broth flavor. The cheese melted on top was also mediocre. For my entree I had the Steak Maitre d' and my fiance had the filet mignon. My dish was good, but I don't think it was worht the price. The steak seems a little lacking in flavor. French fries were fine. The filet mignon dish was good. We ended with a creme brulee that was very tasty!Parking is scarce - try the street or the neighborhoods around the block.

Casita Del Campo
I dined here last weekend for a friend's birthday dinner. It's a very popular place in the Silver lake area and on the weekends it gets really crowded. Reservations recommended for sure. I had never been there before and although I enjoyed my meal, I probably would only go back if I was invited again to a friends birthday or something. I did like the inside of the restaurant. The lights were dimmed and the artwork throughout the restaurant was very cool. The food was good and the margaritas were typical for a Mexican restaurant. The service was good too. The only thing I really didn't like were the tortilla chips. They were super hard and I thought I might chip a tooth. That was disappointing because that's one of my favorite things about Mexican restaurants, good chips and salsa. Valet parking only.

Food Fair
First of all...4.5 is my rating.....When you enter, your like, this place is tiny...the kitchen is bigger than the sitting area....Secondly, the table are too close together...obviously because the place is so small. The wood bench is really hard to sit comfortably on...Ok...so why the high rating ???The service is good....The waiter really was friendly anddefinitely on his game...But here's the real reason....The Food...Food in this little strip mall restaurant is usually foundin top notch, established and polished establishments...The chef here killed it on every itemThe tortellini, the shrimp bisque soup,The fried calamari....all of it was spot on...For the entree, I had the steak...as good as any 5 star steak house I've been to.They get a solid 4.5 from me....

Just a moment...
