General Info

The Petersen Automotive Museum is dedicated to the exploration and presentation of the automobile and its impact on American life and culture using Los Angeles as the prime example. Encompassing more than 300,000 square feet, its exhibits and lifelike dioramas feature more than 150 rare and classic cars, trucks and motorcycles. Covering four floors, the facility features permanent exhibits on the first floor that trace the history of the automobile. Visitors are invited to walk through, not by, exhibits and dioramas and experience settings of early Los Angeles where the world’s first shopping district was designed. The second floor presents five rotating galleries with state-of-the-art displays of race cars, classic cars, vintage motorcycles, concept cars, celebrity and movie cars, and auto design and technology. The May Family Discovery Center is located on the third floor. Designed to spark interest in science by way of the automobile, the 6,500 square-foot, interactive "hands-on" learning center teaches children basic scientific principles by explaining the fundamental functions of a car. A spectacular all-glass penthouse conference center, Founder’s Lounge and kitchen, comprise the fourth floor, which is available for special events and functions. The Petersen Automotive Museum Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, governed by a Board of Directors.

If you or your kids are even remotely interested in cars you need to make at least one visit here. They have a great Hot Wheels section that kids love. Nice tours as well with plenty of cool old cars, movie cars to see. I would suggest some more patient tour guides though - kids can be a bit excited and tour guides need to realize they don't have the listening patience most adults may have.

Wonderful! The cars are amazing with a lot of very rare makes and models. Took a tour of the vault and enjoyed it immensely. If you love cars, this is the place to visit!

The Peterson Auto Museum is a family favorite around here. The men in my family are not huge museum goers, but this is one where my dad and grandpa enjoy tagging along. It is even better since the updates have been made.

Such a great car museum. They don't just have car exhibitions but also bikes and motorcycles. It's right across from LACMA. It's always on my must list when there are visitors in town. I strongly suggest take an afternoon and visit this place.

  • Great Place for Dads and Kids
    AM Man

My dad took me here along with his dad (my grandpa). They had a great time talking about the cars and remembering 'when' while I had fun photographing them (the cars). It was lots of fun and I learned a lot without it being Educational.

  • A treasure!

I agree with the other reviewers, this is one awesome museum! I don't consider myself a car buff, but I love this museum! Honestly, it is so interesting, I try to go at least twice a year.

  • Worth The Coupon Price

My family and I went primarily for the Hot Wheels Exhibit but the other exhibits were nice too. I'm not sure I would've been satisified with our visit though if we had paid full price. We had a coupon for one adult admission free with purchase and since all three of our children are under the age of 5 we ended up only having to pay $10. We're not BIG ""car people"" but it was a good value for 10 bucks.

  • In this city, this museum is perfect!

Angelenos have long been married to their cars. Before I moved here, I laughed at ""L.A. Story,"" now I nod solemnly as I watch it. The Petersen Auto Museum is right at home in Los Angeles, offering a wonderful look at the vehicles of yesteryear, including L.A.'s famous Red Car trolley service. Schedule a full day to see all the exhibits and ogle the beautifully restored vehicles kept here. It's a great trip for the whole family, or present for an automotive buff.

  • Fun Facts and Interesting History

This is the place to spend a Sunday afternoon. Meandering around this museum gets you interesting historic facts on America's early automotive days. For those who are star struck, the Peterson also houses famous cars from television and movies. Those of us who love fast cars and kustom cars, this is also the place to go. Bring the kids too! There are tons of interactive things for them to learn from and a pretty nifty gift shop.

  • Cars are cars all over the world

A tribute to engineering, art, commerce and popular culture, the Petersen Automotive Museum comprises an amazing collection of cars and automotive design. The cars that expanded and accelerated America: Model Ts, little Deuce Coupes and family station wagons. And these are the cars that imagined the future--streamlined Jetsonian vehicles that look like rocket-refrigerators. A fascinating depiction of the last century and this one as expressed through our four-door exoskeletons.
