General Info

The Chaya restaurant family originated when Hikage Chaya opened in Hayama, Japan. From this initial tea house, that opened 390 years ago, the Tsunoda family has expanded into French bistros and pastry shops throughout Japan and introduced the brand to the U.S. in 1984 with the opening of Chaya Brasserie in Beverly Hills. Since then, Chaya has opened locations in Venice, San Francisco, Downtown Los Angeles, and LAX. The cuisine at each restaurants can best be described as modern Japanese though each restaurant has a distinct personality reflecting their different locations. Corporate Executive Chef, Shigefume Tachibe is best known for pioneering modern Japanese cuisine and his contributions to the Asian-Fusion movement. His chef coat and knife are in permanent display in the Smithsonian. The most important tenet of Chaya's philosophy is high-level omotenashi (hospitality), bringing the Japanese teahouse tradition of warm and personal service to each guest.

    The Cucarhurrio

    Chaya Downtown is a really sexy spot. It has good food at a great price, in fact, one of the best ""Happy-Hours"" in Los Angeles. You definitely won't leave there hungry, or sober(depending on your earlier day at work). Best part about it, ""It's for cheap"" and a pretty classy enviroment filled with young and sexy professionals.

    The bad side: There seemed to be a gnat problem in the bar area. Extremely annoying and a tad nasty. You end up using chopsticks to fight them off. Also, the booth seating is horrendously uncomfortable and made for Ewoks( small furry denziens from Star Wars III).

    But overall the food is good and the service is the best. I will definitely continue to frequent here often. Yet, you won't see me near the bar until the gnats are gone. This place can easily be a five-star joint if this and the seating is corrected.

  • Good Happy Hour Food

    I like the HH drinks here but they could be stronger. I usually get the Russian Blues cocktail. It's Skyy citrus vodka, a blueberry puree sweet and sour, soda water, and fresh blueberries. ($5)

    For food we had:
    -the anchovy: served with fennel and celery, a perfect combo! De-lish!
    -calamari: lightly breaded, was very good
    -lamb burger: very tasty and came with homemade potato chips. I could pass on those cuz they were a bit oily
    -spicy tuna roll: a typical roll, but was good
    -albacore roll: excellent

    Each of these were $5, but HH appetizers run $3-7. Beers (bottled and drafts) were $5, wine were $5-6, and cocktails were $5.

    The decor was very modern, with a bit of a 1920's feel behind the bar. This would be good place to meet up with a friend or co-worker. But a date? Mmmm.... maybe. During the day, it's pretty bright with all the floor to ceiling windows. I preferred it once the sun went down.

  • Awesome Kobe!

    This is my first dining experience at Chaya Downtown and a good one. Great service, great atmosphere and décor, and great for date. I suggest the Kobe Steaks or the special’s of the evening that the waitress or waiter names off upon ordering.
