Doheny Eye Institute
I have learnt over the last couple of years that the Doheny eye center is one of the best clinics for special eye related matters. Retinal problems, Cornea issues, Eye diseases, Macular Degeneration - there is a specialist here for each of these problems. For a simple eye exam, I don't recommend Doheny (I don't even know if they see you for a simple eye exam). This place has a huge facility and is part of the University of Southern California. They also have an extension office in Pasadena.Parking used to be free but it is $5 now but in a covered garage.Doctors are great. At least the one's I have encountered. So why the 4 stars? Well, to make an appointment here is difficult. You have to wait weeks sometimes. For those who are Kaiser insurance holders, this is not a new thing, but for those who are used to the PPO treatment and getting quick appointments, this can be cumbersome. Also, they are always running late. Everytime I have been there, it has taken me at least 2-3 hours. But they are very thorough in what they do. I really like that about them.

I had cosmetic surgery on my lower eyelids with Dr. Fett 6 weeks ago after he performed surgery on my partner about a year ago. My partner is HIV positive so we were nervous about possible complications with elective surgery. Dr. Fett personally spoke with my partner's HIV doctor to make certain everything was OK prior to surgery and was great with follow up and care after surgery (he even called us at home several times to make sure everything was going well). The surgery results look very natural and we certainly went to the right doctor.

I was in a bad auto accident 2 years ago and was hospitalized with very bad injuries including a broken nose and a broken eye socket. I started tearing a few months ago and my eye doctor (Dr. Steven Richlin who is a great eye doctor) referred me to Dr. Fett to repair my blocked tear duct. The surgery was done in his licensed surgery center as an out patient. The center is very well run and nurses are terrific especially Robin. I really felt at home. Dr. Fett eliminated my tearing problem with no visible scar. No complaints.

Dr. Fett fixed my child's drooped eyelid. The problem runs in the family. My father and brother have the same problem. Benjamin, my son, had 2 surgeries before he was six years old which only fixed the problem a little. Dr. Fett fixed his right eye recently when he was 9 and now it looks perfect and even with the other side. Dr. Fett and his office are very good with children and parents. My brother is going to fly out from the east coast to have his eyelid fixed by Dr. Fett. Everything went really well.

I'd endured wasting synd due to HIV/AIDs since an injection in '76 and was afraid of scaring children in markets, I shopped at night. With a series of fillers Dr. Fett was so kind as to acquire for me a tremendous Nephrologist for my Renal Stage IV, he has given me the confidence to return among the living and walk into any store, he listens, photographs and then does his incredible work. Dr. Fett is an excellent doctor with a really nice bedside manner. He cared for my dad when he needed surgery on his upper eyelids for a medical problem. Everything went perfectly and the office is very responsive. He treated my dad (and my entire family) in such a nice way that I will refer other friends and family members to him. As a surgeon I would give him an A Plus.

Los Angeles Vision Center Optometry
Was across the street at Los Angeles County Museum of Art when a screw from my glasses caused a lens to pop out. The nice folks at LAVC told me to wait for an optician. 2 minutes later, they fixed my glasses-- for FREE. Honest and professional experts. And they were open on President's Day!!

He is an optometrist at Blackstone Optometry. He's been taking images of my eyes for several years now, so that we can compare and see if there's any abnormality going on. It's a great way to detect diabetes early, I heard. His office is in a store, and they carry really cool glass frames.

Tips & Advices
While the first appointment is the most comprehensive, the majority of appointments with an ophthalmologist begin with a basic eye exam followed by a refraction to test if glasses are needed. Other tests might include an eye muscle coordination exam, a check of pupil response and peripheral vision, slit lamp microscope test to look at the anterior segment of the eye, and an intraocular pressure assessment.
Most eye doctors will charge different amounts for their services, but a basic eye exam with an ophthalmologist can range from $50 to $300. Additional tests and treatment will add to the price.
Ophthalmology subspecialties include strabismus/pediatric ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology, retina/uveitis ophthalmology, cornea/anterior segment ophthalmology, ophthalmic plastic surgery, and reconstruction.
Ophthalmologists can diagnose macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, ocular albinism, vitreous traction, cataracts, astigmatism, myopia, retinoblastoma, and many more.
The most popular ophthalmology procedures are cataract, laser eye treatment, and glaucoma surgeries.
