Little Bear: A Belgian Beer Cafe
Honestly, this is some of the best food I've ever had in the Los Angeles area. The restaurant is a bit difficult to find, tucked on a side street in the heart of east downtown L.A., but if you know the restaurant State & Church, it's just across the street. It's a big red door. So, first let's talk about the beer. The menu is filled with artisan Belgian style beers, both imported and domestic. You can't go wrong, but talk to your waiter about what you like, or what you feel like having, and you'll get a good recommendation. Be bold - the selection changes all the time. I highly recommend the Ommegang Witte, if available - sweet, summery, just great. Then the appetizers. There are several mussel dishes to choose from - just pick one. I love the smoked salmon bruschetta - it's out of this world. And the mushroom risotto ... ay yi. I got a taste of the salmon sandwich and one of the burgers - they're pretty much fantastic. But let me tell you, it's all about the smoked wild boar sausage, with pureed roasted sweet potatoes, black kale and pearl onions. I haven't tasted boar sausage like this since my last meal in Venice (Italy, not the beach town). And if you're not adventurous for the boar, head straight for the grilled smoked salmon and taste a bit of heaven. Seriously, this is my new favorite restaurant.

Red Lion Tavern
The 'Red Lion' is an LA/Silver Lake institution. Good German food and drink with German expats and local Silver Lake/Echo Park bohemians rubbing shoulders and having a good time.It can get mighty crowded on weekends so try and schedule your first visit there for a weeknight or earlier in the day.Almost always an interesting crowd (including the waitresses) and a reliable menu (besides the sausage platter which is a nice treat for drinking parties try the fish and chips, and the steak tartar).Have to recommend for Sunday brunch too.

The Griffin
The drinks are not especially good or cheap and, you better get there early on the weekends before the cool people do around 10pm if you want a spot at the bar. All and all its fun if you don't mind crowded bars with every other dude wearing one of those tough guy leather wrist band watches. Although I went with my own date, I couldn't help but notice my poor single brethren and the poor ratio. What gets this place the four stars is the cool interior. It is very well done and worth a stop if you need one for the road.

The Living Room Cocktails Live Music
I love what they have done with the place! The remodeling of this community bar/lounge is impeccable! The bartenders sure know how to make a GREAT drink and with the daily drink specials, I can have lots of them :-) The environment is super chill and the crowd is pretty trendy. Looking forward to many more events in the near future. So far I've heard of kareokee, jazz bands and sip n paint, in addition to general party fun! Check it out and let them know I sent you! Xoxox

The Griffin
Nice place, cool interior with higher ceilings with fireplaces, couches, nooks and crannies. Great for dimly lit conversation. This place has that hipster feel without the hipster attitude. There is a nice little porch area for the smokers in the group. I did notice a line to get in so get their early or enjoy the likes of the sidewalk for a while. That being said, I am glad they limit the number in, it allows for enough room as to not feel claustrophobic.

The Edison
The best place in the whole dtla area. Everything is "prohibition" themed: cocktail waitresses wear flapper dresses, there are black and white movies playing on the walls, live jazz music . they also have great aerial and burlesque performances. This place is a must! Only 4 stars because they started to charge a cover fee of $10 which is sad. Thursday happy hour includes 25 cents martinis!

Old School!..in a good way. My dates and I have enjoyed the video game selection though if you are there with someone sufficiently young or someone who is not into video games they can get bored. The stand-out part is that they have a food truck on most nights and an open-air bar which reminds me of all the times I've walked around in Europe with open bottles of beer (Berlin, anyone?)

One of the first of a resurgence of arcade bars popping up around town. They have a lot of the old classic arcade games and pinball games for a quarter (they have a change machine) and small tables near each machine on which to set your beer. They have a nice outdoor section if you're not into playing the games. I recommend getting there at around nine before the crowd really comes in.

Just a moment...
