Dowell Automotive Repair
I am writing this review because I saw a bad review of Dowell as I looked up their number online--and I think it's unfair and untrue. As a business owner myself I know that thousands of happy customers might never leave reviews--mostly just the mad ones. As much as my computer business tries to do a good job and be fair, one out of every 2000 customers gets unreasonably mad and vents via a review.I am not associated with Dowell except I have taken my cars there for repair on numerous occasions. I almost gave 5 stars--maybe I should have. Here is my honest opinion of them. I'll start with the most negative first: They are about the same price as all the other reputable non-dealership repair places. We all want a place that's always the cheapest but they are about average price. Maybe that's why I withheld my 5th star. (Nevertheless, I still keep taking my car back there because I don't know of any shop that's better.)On the positive side, I consider them very knowledgeable and competent. They don't try to "up-sell" or pressure sell you anything--just provide information you can make your own decision with. I disagree with the comment that they are "unfriendly". I would call them courteous, professional, business-like, fair, and human. By human, I mean their "friendliness" partially depends on the person they are interacting with. They may be less "friendly" if they are being cursed at--I don't know because I've never done that to them.My perception gleaned from about a half dozen repairs at Dowell is that they have honest business practices. I trust them with my vehicle. That is one reason I go back. As for the guy with the 1-star review that said they charged "3X as much"? Was he comparing "apples to apples"? I doubt it--because otherwise, why didn't he get quotes ahead of time and elect to go to the place 3X cheaper? I sure would. Finally, from a fellow business owner's perspective, I would like to appeal to satisfied customers to take the time to write reviews--we rarely do. It seems like it's only the people who have unreasonable expectations and don't get their way.

Elston Auto Repair
The staff is great and they are super freindy. The rewards repeat customers for oil changes, I have had my car to 3 different place that over charged me and did not do the work right, but luckely I found this place and have been taking my car back eer since. Ignor the comment from the one girl that said her daddy could do it better, So was probably mad that she had to pay for it and it was not done for free like she was use to. All of the other reviews are good. It's just one person trying to ruin a small businss. So, come and enjoy the freindly staff and support a local small business

Elston Auto Repair
A+ to Elston's Auto Repair. My daughter broke down in Lafayette on way back home to Griffith, IN, and I had her towed to Elston's. Extremely professional, thorough, explained all options, went above and beyond to get parts quickly and did a lot of needed work for a very reasonable price. True professionals. This is what everyone wants, a service shops that's straightforward, helpful, honest, qualified and does not rake you over the coals. Highly recommend this place. Wish I had one in Griffith. Jim P

Walter's Auto Imports Repair Inc
Walter had one of his guys give my wife and kids a ride to the zoo and picked them up when they were done. Whhaaat? Who does that? Van ran flawlessly on the 7,500 mile road trip. The problem was a severed power wire running to the coil which they reran and changed my air box which is impossible to find. Unbelievable service and caring guys.

Elston Auto Repair
I love this place. I have taken my car there many many times for all sorts of things. I have even recommened them to all my friends and family even if they do not live in town. Jay is the best mechanic in Lafayette. I will continue to go there as long as I live in Lafayette or close to Lafayette.

Beck's Auto Center
I went into the shop because something had broken loose under my car after an unavoidable collision with a rock. The technician looked at my car and got me a quick fix without the need for a lengthy repair, which I feared would be the case. It is nice to know honest repairmen exist! Thanks, Beck!

Elston Auto Repair
I love this local shop. I have been to other shops and was not treated half as good as I was here. The staff is great and I am proud to support a small local business. The staff is the only I trust my car with other than my own father.

Tips & Advices
Among the common scams pulled are needless repairs, where a garage charges you for work that isn't necessary. Another popular one is attracting customers through a cheap oil change or tire pressure check. Then, when you your car is being repaired, they give you a long list of other corrections they'd like to make, therefore boosting the total cost of your bill. The best way to combat these types of problems is getting a written estimate before work is done so you can see how much repairs are expected to cost. If the final bill is higher than the estimate projected, ask to specifically see the work. Make sure information is put in writing as well. If a problem remains, you can have proof that work was not done to your satisfaction.
For winter driving, features such as the defroster, heater and exhaust system are paramount. Look in your owner's manual for specific directions on how features should be checked and repaired. Many newer cars have a cabin air filter that can be replaced when needed, allowing warm air to continue to flow in. Also, check tires before winter driving, as they need to be at the proper pressure to perform well on snow and ice.
In the spring and summer, you want to be sure your air conditioner and cooling systems work correctly. Given the high temperatures, overheating is a common problem. Look over the system by ensuring there is enough coolant available. If it needs to be refilled, it is best to open the hood and add more to the car before it gets too warm out. Also, clean out fan ducts and other ventilation sources necessary for summertime driving.
Some fixes to your car can be done without paying a specialist. Issues like replacing oil and air filters are relatively simple, with instructions provided in the owner's manual on how to make these changes. The same goes for replacing broken windshield wipers or burnt-out headlights. Such issues should be repaired quickly to guarantee safety, but don't require a visit to a garage.
Yes. Not every type of auto repair work needs to be done by a certified mechanic. You can fix some of a vehicle's issues just by paying attention to how the automobile is running and having a basic understanding of auto repair. Look over the ways weather may impact your car and what preventative measures you can take to avoid having to take it into the shop.
