I could not add a owner response so I am adding one here. Now I would like to tell my side of this story. Jennifer drove her car to our shop on May 1, 2013 for check engine light on, hearing water sloshing and water in passenger floor board. Also sometimes it would over heat. First of all we ran a scan diagnostic. The cost for this is $70.00. There is a sign posted in my office stating this. We found code P0301 for #1 cylinder missfire. Checked the ignition coil and spark plug. They appeared new. However, where she had these installed, they did not add dielectric grease to the spark plug which caused this missfire. We added the grease and reinstalled plug. Then cleared the codes. The car did not overheat with us. Checked cooling fans, because she was told they were not working, They are working, but her oil light kept flickering which she knew about. This can cause a car to overheat when it is abused from not changing the oil and the car loosing oil pressure from time to time. Her ac drain was stopped up and we did try to clean it out with a wire hanger (even the dealership uses this) As we explained to her, there is a repair for this. 02 Mits Galant are known for this problem. But once you make the repair, it backs up the water in the drain tube and drips on the drivers feet. Charged Jennifer $70.00 for all of this and $39.42 for an oil change. Then she called and had her car towed in onJune 12, 2013.(keep in mind she drove it in the first time) She said her car keeps cutting off, hard to crank and the check engine light was on. We ran another scan diagnostic and found codes p0102 vaf circuit, p0113 intake air, and p300 for random missfires. After checking her mass air flow sensor we found it was bad and needed replacing. Called the customer and she was immediately mad because she thought it pertained to the last time her car was here and it should be free. I tried to explain it was not the same thing, but she did not want to hear what I had to say. She was the one who got defensive and wanted her car. I told her she owed us $35.00 for the diagnosis and then she went off on me on the phone. So at that point I did get defensive. I don't understand why people have to be so nasty. I do understand we are not going to make every customer happy, but I am proud to say 99 percent of our customers love us. I hated Jennifer felt she had to report this with such anger, but that is her right.

More people should know about this place. I'm lucky to have read the reviews and decided to have them help me out with an issue I have been having for some time. I was told by another shop that I needed to replace my ac compressor, when in fact that wasn't what was causing the problems. Not only are they're labor charges the cheapest I've ever seen...but they can get parts that you need cheaper than you will pay at most auto parts stores and make sure you aren't over-spending. They are courteous, professional, and flexible about scheduling. I highly recommend this shop to anyone that needs car work and I will be returning if I ever find myself in need of automobile assistance.

Crom Transmission & Automotive Specialists
I've been going here ever since I moved here. They are a wonderful family owned business. So friendly and honest. Their prices are fair, not totally cheap but they back up their work with a warranty. Even just after my warranty expired they totally hooked me up. I've had some friends say they got a better deal other places and could do it their selves cheaper but that, to me, is asking for a headache. Of course you get your parts cheaper if you buy them yourself. You get food cheaper at food lion than a restaurant and if you cook it yourself right? and is it a surprise the chef don't sell you the food at cost? For the service I have there it's so worth it.

Merchant's Tire & Auto Centers
Most tire repair services around here close around 6 or 7. Merchants was open til 8(although they had a skeleton crew). One of my tires was leaking slowly and I couldn't find out why. I had conducted a soapy water test and thought it might've been the valve stem(a common problem). After calling them at 7pm, I asked if I needed an appointment for this minor issue. They told me to come right in and were able to get the issue resolved in 15 mins after removing the tire and cleaning it. I had mud that seeped into the inner lip causing it to slowly leak air. Worth the $20. Excellent service.

D & S Towing and Auto Repair
Very professional, very nice, and very helpful. As a girl the though is always in the back of my mind that a mechanic might be taking advantage of the fact that I don't know much about cars, but I did not feel this way with D&S. The owner was very nice and explained everything to me and showed me the problem. The labor rates are the same if not less then most places in Jacksonville and surrounding areas. The total bill was reasonable, and I told him to fix what needed to be fixed and my car has been running great since. I would definitely recommend them to others.

Merchant's Tire & Auto Centers
I was very satisfied with the level of service I received at Merchant. One of my tires kept losing air pressure, so I took it into Merchant to get it looked at. Turns out I ran over a nail, so they quickly fixed it for me and didn't charge me a penny. I had bought tires from them several months back, so it was part of their complimentary service. Their staff is professional and friendly, and their waiting area is nice and clean. Merchant tire is my "go to" tire center in Jacksonville, I highly recommend them.

Merchant's Tire & Auto Centers
Merchant tire on Western was awesome. Had the misfortune of catching a screw in my tire. Within an hour of getting to the store, my truck was done. The staff was friendly, fair, and attentive. They really helped me out in a pinch and at a great price too! They offer military discounts. Let me just say with the deal i got, i went and bought the whole shop donuts (it is a rarity to find this in Jacksonville). True old time business where quality and customer satisfaction are superb!

Merchant's Tire & Auto Centers
The customer service representative that I spoke to was not friendly. She talked as if she had an attitude and wanted me out of there as soon as possible. I had an oil change done, they called me and told me I needed some new tires and I also got those taken care of. The work was done quickly, but I was never quoted a price or told how long it would take though. Overall, I don't really like going to this place, but it's a hit or miss thing.

Sanders Garage of Jacksonville
Had brake work and an oil change on different cars and they were quick, courteous, and just plain awesome! Both jobs were rather short notice and they got them done the same day with no problem! Both cars were from 1996, an Oldsmobile and a Buick. We're very grateful to have them as our mechanics. If only we could find a vet that was this good!-LaPointes
Tips & Advices
Among the common scams pulled are needless repairs, where a garage charges you for work that isn't necessary. Another popular one is attracting customers through a cheap oil change or tire pressure check. Then, when you your car is being repaired, they give you a long list of other corrections they'd like to make, therefore boosting the total cost of your bill. The best way to combat these types of problems is getting a written estimate before work is done so you can see how much repairs are expected to cost. If the final bill is higher than the estimate projected, ask to specifically see the work. Make sure information is put in writing as well. If a problem remains, you can have proof that work was not done to your satisfaction.
For winter driving, features such as the defroster, heater and exhaust system are paramount. Look in your owner's manual for specific directions on how features should be checked and repaired. Many newer cars have a cabin air filter that can be replaced when needed, allowing warm air to continue to flow in. Also, check tires before winter driving, as they need to be at the proper pressure to perform well on snow and ice.
In the spring and summer, you want to be sure your air conditioner and cooling systems work correctly. Given the high temperatures, overheating is a common problem. Look over the system by ensuring there is enough coolant available. If it needs to be refilled, it is best to open the hood and add more to the car before it gets too warm out. Also, clean out fan ducts and other ventilation sources necessary for summertime driving.
Some fixes to your car can be done without paying a specialist. Issues like replacing oil and air filters are relatively simple, with instructions provided in the owner's manual on how to make these changes. The same goes for replacing broken windshield wipers or burnt-out headlights. Such issues should be repaired quickly to guarantee safety, but don't require a visit to a garage.
Yes. Not every type of auto repair work needs to be done by a certified mechanic. You can fix some of a vehicle's issues just by paying attention to how the automobile is running and having a basic understanding of auto repair. Look over the ways weather may impact your car and what preventative measures you can take to avoid having to take it into the shop.
