Coastal Spine & Pain Center
This place is a gift from God. I have been under their care for more than 5 years and the Dr's and entire staff are excellent. I am sorry that some people have had a bad experience but this is not the norm. This is a TRUE pain clinic and not a pill mill. They require monthly urinalysis and count your meds when you come in for your monthly visit/refills. For someone who is truly in pain and does not mind their two rules, this is the place for you. Their only two rules are to have a clean drug test ( except for meds you are currently prescribed ) and follow the directions on the pill bottles. This means don't do other drugs, don't take more than prescribed, and don't give or sell your meds to anyone else. If you can follow those easy rules then you have a great doctor for life. They are not rude or insist on perfection. If you are a few pills short one month or have alcohol in your system one month they are not just going to discharge you. They R there to help you and will work with you. Any Dr. who is prescribing narcotics nowadays has to be careful but if you are able to follow these two rules then you are fine. This is not a place for junkies or addicts to come get pain meds from so don't bother trying. They have seen/heard all the excuses of why there was drugs or alcohol in your system and/or why you should have a few dozen pills left but you have none. They are not stupid. The good thing is that if you ARE an addict and want help they are also licensed to treat addiction medicine ( suboxone, Subutex, etc ) and they can help you get your life back. I have a chronic, degenerative, extremely painful, rare, disease and used to hurt 24/7. Other doctors saw my age ( 25 ) and laughed me out the door thinking I was a junkie. Nexstep has treated me with compassion and care and without them I would probably be dead. They understand when I need to switch meds or increase dosage as my tolerance builds. TRUE pain patients who need a good doctor should give them a try. They saved my life and might save yours. Good luck to all who have pain and I wish you the best of luck. Andrew M

Dr. Willens has been taking care of me and my sister for several years. He is really wonderful, kind, caring, professional, and very smart. The new office is absolutely beautiful. It's the nicest doctor's office I have ever been to and all the art on the walls are Dr. Willens's photographs. The staff is like family. I was originally in a very serious car crash about 5 years ago and was referred to Dr. Willens by my family doctor who I trust and I was impressed that Dr. Willens trained at the Cleveland Clinic. When I first came to him, I thought that I would be in pain or be on major narcotics for the rest of my life. I didn't know that there was anything that anyone could do about it except surgery and I was going to do that. But he treated me with injections and a Spinal Cord Stimulator and I don't have to take any narcotics almost ever. If your looking to get better and be treated by a great doctor and staff, then this is your place. Thank you Dr. Willens!

Absolutely GREAT!I had a car accident this year and was referred to them as my new pain management doctor. My situation was compounded by the fact that I had back surgery last year and now everything was aggravated in addition the the new injury. The staff was extraordinarily helpful and took great care of me. Finally, I needed a spinal cord stimulator which worked great and I didn't have to have surgery again. Highest recommendations to anyone wanting a doctor that actually cares.

I have to say that he is the very best doctor I have ever seen! Seriously! Why? Because he is obviously very kind, very smart, very compassionate, and explained everything to me in a very simple way I could understand. I am 90% better in only 3 months and like everyone else, I actually enjoy going to see all of them. I am so glad that I found them. Thank you Dr. Willens and Melissa and Amber too!

Tips & Advices
Several forms of pain management exist that are not approved typically treated by physicians or covered by health insurance plans. These include therapies like acupuncture, for example, or herbal preparations sold in stores. Before beginning any form of treatment or medication not approved by a doctor, it’s a good idea to still reach out to a physician or expert in alternative medicine for advice, or conduct some research online first.
Managing pain in children can be complicated, as kids may have more difficulty communicating their pain to doctors. Children also need to be more carefully monitored when taking most medications.
Health insurance might cover a selection of approved pain management therapies. Every insurance plan is different, so patients should check with their provider to make sure.
Patients might be instructed to continue therapy at home, either through regular exercise or specific treatment. Some people also find that getting frequent rest, taking warm baths or avoiding certain foods, for example, can help manage pain.
Side effects depend on the exact drugs and dosages used, as well as the disease being treated and many other factors. Some pain-relieving drugs, especially opioids, are known to cause drowsiness. Many antidepressants also cause a variety of adverse effects. Doctors must work closely with patients to minimize these side effects in the course of treatment.
