We just stayed at this motel this past weekend and were very pleasantly surprised. After reading several reviews, we were hesitant, however, this was the only motel in Hawley that had a vacancy that would allow us to book only one night on a weekend at this time of year. We were visiting the area for a fishing tournament and couldn't stay for more than one night, so we were kind of "stuck" with this place. Like I said, I was wary after reading some of the reviews on the internet, but our choices were limited at the time.
But, from the time we checked in until the time we left, we had a very enjoyable experience. The owners were very nice and personable. The wife was so pleasant as she checked me in and while she was doing that, her husband walked all the way down to the back of the building to help my husband back up the boat and get it all plugged in to charge the battery. They couldn't have been nicer.
We then went in to check out the room. I'm quite picky, and if the room wasn't clean, I would have had no problem turning around and leaving. I will tell you, the room was absolutely up to my standards - very clean and the grounds around this motel are kept impeccable. We didn't have a chance to check out the indoor pool, but I hear that it's awesome. Some of the reviews are correct in that they are missing some ammenities such as a coffee pot and the bathtub drain and the carpet in the room could use replacing, etc. But the room was clean and the people were very pleasant and nice.
I think what people need to keep in mind is that these places in small towns such as these are mom & pop operations; they are not chain hotels. These folks are hard-working people with families and they need to close up the office at 9:00 pm to go home to sleep. This is not exclusive to this motel, others in the area do the same thing. As for not serving coffee or having a coffee pot in the room - they do not advertise anywhere that they do offer a continental breakfast or have a coffee pot in the rooms, so I don't think it should be expected. No drain in the bathtub? Yes, at first this seems odd, but if you have a guest or two who make a mess and cost you a lot of money in repairs......well, a few bad apples can spoil things for the whole bunch. Maybe these folks have been burned one too many times. Signing a smoking waiver? That waiver was right on the same rental agreement I signed when I checked in - it wasn't a separate sheet of paper - and I've seen this at every other non-smoking hotel and motel I've ever stayed at, too - they'll all charge you extra if you smoke in a non-smoking room - I'm a smoker, but even I understand & get that!
To sum up, It would have been a shame if we had passed this place up because of some of the negative reviews - I think these folks have gotten a bad rap from a few disgruntled guests. I'm hoping that I can make sure others in similar situations will give them a try and put their mind at ease because it really was a nice little place. Fancy? No. A friendly and clean place? Absolutely. All in all, I would be very happy to stay there again the next time I'm in Hawley, Pa!
We stayed at this motel because we had a bad auto accident (not our fault) and a very kind auto body shop owner dropped us off there so we'd have shelter for the night. We were so grateful to him and for a place to stay that we didn't even mind the $86. for an uncomfortable room with few amenities. There was no plug for the bathtub and being so sore from the accident I would really have loved a hot bath but a shower had to do. There was no phone or coffee maker so I had to walk up to the front office and wait for it to open at 9am so I could ask if there was any coffee available. I was shocked how rude the owner, Ken, was to me...he was in a really bad mood and snapped at me that I could go get it at the Turkey Hill gas station (which is a mile up the highway), then said "this is a motel not a hoteI". I couldn't stop myself from telling him that in my experience most motel's make coffee available to guests even if only via a vending machine. He said "I can't help you!" wish I could share the tone but it was truly umm. beligerent. Guess I said the wrong thing because he got really agitated but I suppose I thought he'd welcome the feedback which is really all I was offereing. We were stranded with no car and were waiting for our transportation to arrive to take us home, so unfortunately I had to ask if they could give us a late check out of noon rather than 11am. I didn't think it would be a problem as they were not full up and we had special circumstances. The wife and other owner (Sue) however, not only refused us but even became angry and said we had a nerve asking for favors after "ragging on my husband about our not serving you coffee this morning". I swear I was shocked speechless, and when I recovered I tried to actually have a reasonable conversation with her. I was of course willing to apologize as I'd truly meant no offense but she just went ballistic and talked right over me. It was truly bizarre behavior. Even if I had actually been rude about the coffee which I had not, what kind of person treats customers like that? We didn't even try to argue, we just left and walk/limped up the busy highway for about a mile into town, and it wasn't all that easy either as we were pretty banged up from the accident and one of us had a concussion. Anyway we waited for our ride at the truly peaceful and welcoming town welcome center where there is a gorgeous view of the lake. I have stayed at a few bad motels in my life but this was probably the worst experience I've had a motel just because of the way the owners acted. If it was just the room, honestly I've stayed at motels which cost half of what they charge and had a more comfortable experience with better amenities in the room.
