Gils Garage
The excellent customer service and experienced technicians at Gil's Garage of Halfmoon make having my vehicle serviced and repaired here (I've had both done) a pleasant experience. Although no one enjoys facing a vehicle repair bill, I've always been given options in a professional manner with an explanation of what needs to be done immediately, and what could possibly wait until a later date. After reading the review posted previously, I have found my numerous experiences here to be as opposite from this as can be. I do believe that if you want quality repairs / service with original manufacturer parts - this is the auto service center you should trust with your vehicle..Bob P - Malta, NY

BAD, BAD SHOPAs a former employee, I can personally say this shop is the best example of an untrutworthy and disgusting shop. If you spend enough money they might actually perform the service and treat you well. The manager himself, has made me lie to customers saying that we are out of oil or that our inspection machine is broken, when they simply dont want to do the oil change because they know that customer won't buy anything else. How can you expect someone to spend money at your shop if you keep turning them away for simple oil changes?? They don't open the garage doors when they leave vehicles running, it was so bad one time my customers and I could barely breath in the office! I also sold a reccommendation to a customer which was their factory maintenance of a coolant flush and a 3 part fuel system cleaning, costing about $250, the vehicle was right in front of the office and as I watched the whole time, the two technicians topped off the coolant and pretended to do the fuel cleaning. Most of the people that work here are extremely lazy and want to do as little as possible but still get their pay. This shop charges $24.99 a tire for mount and balance, when they're supposed to charge $9 a tire, also they charge $50 to fix a bead leak!! The manager himself has admitted to repeaditly charging more than he is supposed to so he can hit his numbers and get his bonus. None of this even includes the way I was treated there. I personally love my job and would never want to do anything other than taking care of people. I love being able to help people out, and especially make the female customers more comfortable with seeing another friendly face at a garage, which can actually be a tough experience for some. I never gave any reason for the treatment I received, and many people are surprised I put up with it for so long. Please, don't let these people take advantage of you, they will rip you off and take your money. Go somewhere that will give you a good price AND actually do what you paid for.

I can't speak to the quality of the work since I pulled my vehicle out of the garage due to high pressure and high prices. You may get quality work here but my experience was overpriced with limited options to the scope of the repair and high pressure/fear tactics. If you don't mind overpaying for the work - Gil's Halfmoon may be for you.

Jay's Auto Repair
I recently took my car to Jay's Auto Repair. It is an older car and naturally was concerned about the cost. After reading the reviews on this web site, I decided to give Jay's a try.....thank you, thank you, thank you. They were very personable and gave me OUTSTANDING customer service. For once, I did not feel like I was taken advantage of. I cannot recommend Jay's Auto Repair enough...for outstanding work and pricing. Try will not be disappointed.
Tips & Advices
Among the common scams pulled are needless repairs, where a garage charges you for work that isn't necessary. Another popular one is attracting customers through a cheap oil change or tire pressure check. Then, when you your car is being repaired, they give you a long list of other corrections they'd like to make, therefore boosting the total cost of your bill. The best way to combat these types of problems is getting a written estimate before work is done so you can see how much repairs are expected to cost. If the final bill is higher than the estimate projected, ask to specifically see the work. Make sure information is put in writing as well. If a problem remains, you can have proof that work was not done to your satisfaction.
For winter driving, features such as the defroster, heater and exhaust system are paramount. Look in your owner's manual for specific directions on how features should be checked and repaired. Many newer cars have a cabin air filter that can be replaced when needed, allowing warm air to continue to flow in. Also, check tires before winter driving, as they need to be at the proper pressure to perform well on snow and ice.
In the spring and summer, you want to be sure your air conditioner and cooling systems work correctly. Given the high temperatures, overheating is a common problem. Look over the system by ensuring there is enough coolant available. If it needs to be refilled, it is best to open the hood and add more to the car before it gets too warm out. Also, clean out fan ducts and other ventilation sources necessary for summertime driving.
Some fixes to your car can be done without paying a specialist. Issues like replacing oil and air filters are relatively simple, with instructions provided in the owner's manual on how to make these changes. The same goes for replacing broken windshield wipers or burnt-out headlights. Such issues should be repaired quickly to guarantee safety, but don't require a visit to a garage.
Yes. Not every type of auto repair work needs to be done by a certified mechanic. You can fix some of a vehicle's issues just by paying attention to how the automobile is running and having a basic understanding of auto repair. Look over the ways weather may impact your car and what preventative measures you can take to avoid having to take it into the shop.
