I've been going to VAMC Fresno for 14 years, and every area of the Hospital is very professional. However they are swamped with patients and it takes to long for services.

Fresno, CA Veterans Hospital has a few surprises. The Good: some capable, caring doctors in spite of the institution being a "teaching hospital." Most volunteers/staff are helpful/patient. There is noticeable improvement in wait-time, the outdated adage "hurry up and wait" fast becoming outdated/unaccepted. Most areas appear clean and maintained. The Bad: specialist doctors tend to curry diligence apathetically; wait-times are often 1-2 hours long with limited access (1 day a week) to the doctor. Some hospital areas are ridiculously ill-kept--Emergency, for example, manned by some staff that seem uninterested in patients. "Lack of funding" was mentioned. Many departments, aside from Women's Primary Care, seem to feel women veterans' health concerns are frivolous and treat them as such. Opthomologists versus optometrists should be made available. Some positive changes, some negative habits, but an okay hospital if patients start demanding better.

Do not go here! It is filthy and an absolute disgrace that the men and women who have served our country have to go to such a place.

The other two reviews were obviously written by employees/staff. My mother arrived on a Fri afternoon from out of town, I arrived a few minutes later. When I walked in, the nurse and nurse's assistant didn't bother to look up let alone introduce themselves. Once mom was in a gown and into bed, the two of them left without offering a tour of the facilities, information on her p.t. schedule, who the house doctor was, etc.When they didn't return, mom pushed her button so we could speak to them, but also needed help to go to the b/r. We could hear the beep sound at the nurse's station. I walked out into the hall to see if her light over the door was on, which it was, and looked to see where everyone was. The closest station was vacant, and the one way down the hall was filled with staff chatting, laughing, on the phone etc. I returned to mom's room and waited another couple of minutes. Suddenly the beep sound stopped. I went back to the hall and looked above the door to find that her light had been cancelled without a response. Of course we pushed it again. After several minutes, it was again cancelled. I walked to the far nurse's station to ask where my mother's nurse was, and was told she was with another patient and would come to her room when she was done. It was 30 minutes from the time mom first pushed the button, until the time her nurse arrived. A 30 minute wait to use the restroom!! We asked the nurse about mom's p.t. schedule. We were told that they had an unusually high number of admissions on Saturday and were short handed. Instead of the two hour p.t., it would be only one. Sunday would be only one as well. And because it was a three-day weekend, Monday would be one hour also. The hospital mom came from had notified them two days prior that she was coming. I would imagine other hospitals do the same? It was no surprise they would be receiving a higher number of patients, yet the management neglected to adequately staff itself and the patients were shorted as a result. If mom would only be receiving three hours of physical rehab in three days, why were we there? We asked to speak to the P.T. who was extremely condescending, failed to let us finish a sentence before she jumped in with her aggressive responses, and made clear that even though mom had walked in there she would not be allowed to supplement her one hour p.t with a walk down the hall with dad and her cane. Mom had gotten up and walked to the bathroom in the hospital, but this place insisted she go by wheeled-chair. We felt this was a set back.If she had not done her own leg lifts, hip lifts, arm lifts, and fine motor skill exercises in her bed, I am certain she would have become very weak. They also have a public wi-fi, however,the only two people who knew it were on vacation. I explained my mother wanted to put it on her ipad so she could communicate with family, and one of the nurses in the nurse-party-congregation told me to tell her to use the phone.It's kinda hard to surf the web, send email, check your FB, etc. by phone. Oh last thing...the nurses and aides were holding a baby shower for one of their coworkers another time we could not get any help to the bathroom. Go to the Leon S. Peters rehab at Fresno Community. We chose this one this time because of location, but will not go back to SJVRH in the future if the need should arise. Next day: Mom was in horrible pain last night and asked to use the bathroom. They put her in there and left about 5a.m. She had a spell of low blood pressure, became hot and clamy, saw spots, and thought she was about to pass out. She pushed the distress button and nobody came. After a frightening eight or nine minutes she heard a voice in her room and mustered up the strength to scream for help. Do not leave your loved ones alone here. Better yet, do not bring them here to start with. We are leaving.

Many hospitals have their own websites that include information about services offered and how to contact personnel. But you can also search online, in the phone book, and through health and medical-focused review websites.
Medical service prices vary according to the hospital, the type of procedure, and many regulations. The price that a patient actually pays will depend on their insurance coverage policies. If they do not have health insurance, patients may establish payment plans with the health care provider directly.
Most Americans older than 65 are insured under the Medicare program for emergency hospital visits and basic medical care. Whether you are about to turn 65 or already have, you should familiarize yourself with the Medicare program and the benefits it provides. Medicare can work in conjunction with a workplace or other private health plan. Seniors should also take the time to establish legal documents concerning future medical care and end-of-life procedures. These include a living will, advance medical directive, and related documents.
Visitation rules vary by hospital, but in general, any biological or legal family member of a patient is allowed to visit them at an appropriate time and at the patient’s discretion. Friends are typically  allowed to visit at the patient’s and their caregiver’s discretion. A patient may also designate a support person to make decisions on their behalf regarding visitation.
Ambulances are driven and staffed by medical professionals who will transport patients to the closest hospital that can provide the specific services needed. Some hospitals specialize in certain types of emergency care - facilities that specialize in trauma, heart attacks, stroke victims, and children are a few common examples. The patient being transported has the right to request a particular hospital, but the ambulance personnel may refuse this request if they have reason to believe treatment is required as soon as possible. Paramedics may require you to sign a waiver before transporting you to a hospital that you request.
