Kirk Music
In the competitive marketplace of quality stringed instruments - Kirk Music was at first welcomed with open arms - as there had previously not been a dealer specializing in violins, violas, and bass viols. Prices are high on the "premium" instruments - and the Kirk product - some of which are handmade in the Kirk Co's workshop in Billings, Montana - lack the "quality" of other instruments available at a lower price. For example, the Von Aue full-sized cello we ended up buying to replace the 3/4 size student cello our son grew out of [and that has a list price of between $1200 - $1500] - cost just $3000 base price and is of such superior quality and sound to any of the premium cellos we'd examined at Kirk's. Problem is, the Von Aue can only be purchased at Robertson's Violins in Albuquerque, NM! Given that area professional symphony musicians avoid shopping at Kirk's and are willing to travel to Albuquerque to purchase instruments or have them repaired - is food for thought. Unfortunately, for now, the budding classical string play is advised to make the 5-hour trip to take a look at what Robertson's has to offer -- which is oh, so much better than what Kirk's offers
