Swedish Imports
Since I have a vintage Volvo, I called three different Volvo dealers around the triangle----each gave me an estimate btw $50.-$150. The only one that did not give me an estimate was Swedish Imports because he needed to actually 'see' the car & with some of my problems, Volvo just doesn't make some parts anymore. Sounded reasonable & they were only 2 miles away, so I went there. Glad I did! Fixed what he could & only charged me for the headlight--$20.! All the 'others' had maintenance fees etc . just to 'look' at the car. Thank you J.J.!!

B & B Garage
i had repairs made to my vehicles three times and each time they were very efficient, professional and very reasonable. They took the time to explain everything they were doing and an estimate of cost. This business is a well kept secret in Durham.

Sears Auto Center
I needed auto work done and stopped in for an estimate. I was told it would be between $650 and $850 depending on the exact work needed. So I scheduled time to bring my car back the following week. Called to verify everything and the quote went to $1150. I told him I was in last week and you gave me a quote of $650-$850 for the same work. I am a college student and that is a major difference. I told Sears I had to save up to afford that type of cost and asked how long the quote was good for. Auto center schlep said, "today only" and hung up on me. I found a different garage who did that work and much more for about $400 less. No wonder Sears is going bankrupt – Over priced and rude service! I will never shop at Sears for anything!

Lonnie's University Auto Center
I have been taking my cars to Lonnie for over 35 years. He has always done an excellent job and he stands by his work and his prices are always fair. He has moved to several different locations and we have always followed him. I can't think of ever using another mechanic. A nicer guy you will never meet.

Riverview Auto Svc
I had two new tires put on my car today and was referred to Riverview Auto for the alignment. After roughly a 20 minute wait, the mechanic came out and told me that I did not need an alignment and that the wear on the tires I'd replaced was due to not rotating them. How refreshing and honest to not be charged for something I didn't need!! Further, I'd had an object fly under my car on the highway last weekend, and there was a panel hanging. The mechanic tacked the panel back in place. There was no charge for that service either! I am so happy to have found an honest and reputable auto shop. I will be back for any of my auto needs in the future, and I highly recommend them!

Neal's Garage
Neal's garage kept misdiagnosing my brake problem and I had to keep taking it back because my car wasn't driving/braking right... $1400 dollars and a completely new braking system later, it was fixed. They saw me as nothing more than a cash machine.... never again.

Parrott's Automotive
I've been using Parrott's Automotive for over four years for breaks, tires, and other stuff. They have very reasonable rates, work in a timely manner, and are very polite. I would highly recommend them to friends and family.

Tips & Advices
Among the common scams pulled are needless repairs, where a garage charges you for work that isn't necessary. Another popular one is attracting customers through a cheap oil change or tire pressure check. Then, when you your car is being repaired, they give you a long list of other corrections they'd like to make, therefore boosting the total cost of your bill. The best way to combat these types of problems is getting a written estimate before work is done so you can see how much repairs are expected to cost. If the final bill is higher than the estimate projected, ask to specifically see the work. Make sure information is put in writing as well. If a problem remains, you can have proof that work was not done to your satisfaction.
For winter driving, features such as the defroster, heater and exhaust system are paramount. Look in your owner's manual for specific directions on how features should be checked and repaired. Many newer cars have a cabin air filter that can be replaced when needed, allowing warm air to continue to flow in. Also, check tires before winter driving, as they need to be at the proper pressure to perform well on snow and ice.
In the spring and summer, you want to be sure your air conditioner and cooling systems work correctly. Given the high temperatures, overheating is a common problem. Look over the system by ensuring there is enough coolant available. If it needs to be refilled, it is best to open the hood and add more to the car before it gets too warm out. Also, clean out fan ducts and other ventilation sources necessary for summertime driving.
Some fixes to your car can be done without paying a specialist. Issues like replacing oil and air filters are relatively simple, with instructions provided in the owner's manual on how to make these changes. The same goes for replacing broken windshield wipers or burnt-out headlights. Such issues should be repaired quickly to guarantee safety, but don't require a visit to a garage.
Yes. Not every type of auto repair work needs to be done by a certified mechanic. You can fix some of a vehicle's issues just by paying attention to how the automobile is running and having a basic understanding of auto repair. Look over the ways weather may impact your car and what preventative measures you can take to avoid having to take it into the shop.
