Iowa Veterinary Wellness Center
We have been clients at Iowa Veterinary Wellness Center for well over a decade. We have taken several dogs there over the years. We have nothing but positive things to say about the practice, its setting and the staff. The clinic is beautiful: from the landscaping to the furnishings and our favorite, the carpet throughout the building for the pets that have mobility issues. The staff is AMAZING. They are all well educated, compassionate and clearly love what they do. We have used Iowa Veterinary Wellness Center for routine veterinary care as well as holistic care. Our dogs and cats have had acupuncture, laser therapy, and have used herbal medications. We LOVE that the practice offers so many different treatment options and that the staff counsels us on what may be best for OUR pet.We HIGHLY recommend this practice for your pet, too.

Avondale Animal Hospital
Avondale and staff are wonderful. We had our 9yr old cocker to many ets to diagnos unexplained itching. We had looked on line, and she seemed to show all the symptoms of paw mites. No other vet (Anderson Animal Hospital) would test and gave unecessary allergy shots. The wonderful vet Dr Carlos took no time at all to diagnos our poor Lil with mites, and started meds immediately. By this time we had it and also had to be treated as well. They are very concerned and caring, and answer any and all questions, and grasp we know our Lil better than anyone. I cant thank Dr Carlos and staff adequately, they are superb. They are a wonderful facility, not to mention compassionate to pet and owner. WE LOVE AVONDALE, DR CARLOS AND STAFF!

All-Pets Hospital East Village
We are so pleased with the care and service our cats Tiffy and Teddy, and four others before them, receive from Dr. Berge and the All-Pets staff. They are top-knotch - knowledgeable, skilled, friendly, willing to answer questions, and keep us in on the decision making. Their compassion about animals shows in their interactions with them. When we board our cats we know they receive lots of attention and we never worry about leaving them.

Iowa Veterinary Wellness Center
I started going to Iowa Veterinary Wellness Center when my dog was having problems with his joints and needed to lose a little weight. The acupuncture really helped with his joints and the food they put him on (Sojos) helped him lose weight. The whole office is great. Dr. Kim comes into the room and gets down on the floor to get to know your animal. She is the greatest. I will not go anywhere else.

Iowa Veterinary Wellness Center
Iowa Veterinary Wellness is the only place I take my two dogs and cat. I have been going there for over 12 years, and I have to say Dr. Wilke and her wonderful staff are the best. They do the best for my companion animals and I am very happy that they exist. I think the combination of traditional and holistic care works the best for us.

Low Cost Spay Clinic
I have been going to this clinic for several years and I have no complaint. Nice staff and good prices. The clinic is always clean and smells nice when we have gone. The only negative is the lack of appointments but even then, if you go at the right time, the visit is pretty quick.

Berge, Kathy
Excellent care and service. Staff is amazing. They take time to explain care, services, and work with you on pet's issues. They take care of the human as well since sometimes it is very stressful having a pet visit the vet.

Family Pet Veterinary Center South
What I like most about Family Pet Vet is that they know my dog and they actually look forward to seeing him. They treat him great when he is there and that makes it easy on me knowing my dog is comfortable at the vet.
Tips & Advices
Most 24-hour clinics do not allow owners to stay with their pets overnight. However, many do have specific visiting hours or will let owners see their pets at any point during the day. In addition, owners can call most clinics at any time for an update on their pet's well being.
  • Important phone numbers, especially those of the the veterinary clinic, the animal hospital or emergency clinic, and the poison control center
  • A book detailing pet first-aid steps
  • Copy of medical records
  • Nylon leash
  • Muzzle (only use if pet is not vomiting and has no difficulty breathing)
  • Absorbent gauze
  • Nonlatex disposable gloves
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Nail clippers
  • Digital thermometer
  • Sterile saline solution
  • Hydrogen peroxide (to induce vomiting only at the recommendation of a veterinarian
  • Milk of magnesia (to absorb poison only at the recommendation of a veterinarian)
Find a 24-hour animal hospital that provides emergency services within your area. Keep the facility's contact information in a place that's easy to locate, such as the refrigerator, address book, or smartphone. Most veterinary clinics operate on standard business hours and are not equipped to handle emergencies.
Veterinary clinics operate on a smaller scale than animal hospitals. The latter are more likely open 24 hours and provide emergency services. The former generally operate on typical office hours and only perform wellness exams and minor surgeries. Veterinary clinics also do not generally perform laboratory tests on site.
The specifics vary depending on the type of visit. For a wellness exam, bring:
  • Medical records
  • The type or brand of food the pet eats
  • Medication (including flea, tick, and heartworm medication).
If the animal needs medical treatment, the following may be helpful depending on the situation:
  • Fresh stool sample
  • Vomit sample
  • Video of the pet engaging in abnormal behavior
  • Substance the pet may have ingested
