Engine Menders
OK, this is going to be a long review, but these guys are TOTALLY worth it, so here goes. This is a no frills shop. I personally don't care if there is free coffee and ESPN on in the lobby because that means I am paying for it in my bill on the end. It is what you expect from a mechanic shop. Everyone I met or spoke to was courteous and knowledgeable and all answered my MANY questions (I drove Shane crazy with questions, even though he won't admit I did). Shane sourced the best and cheapest place for the parts I needed, and my bill was less, not more, than he quoted. Let me state we have a 2008 Ford F150 which is problematic, to say the least (Google it, god knows it's a horrible year for bugs on this truck), and none of the MANY other shops we took it to would listen when I said, "by the way, the wheel is wobbling. 5 shops (including some very big chain stores) have said it is fine , can you take a look?" Lo and behold, we had a bent axle. Potential for a dangerous accident as well as thousands of dollars in rear end damage, and they saw it and fixed it. They fixed MY screw up (I won't be washing that engine again), and did it all with a smile. Shane called me and kept me updated at every turn. That alone is priceless. Don't you hate it when the shop has your vehicle that you NEED and they say they'll call and they don't, and then you have to call them and they act like it's a inconvenience to them? Well, that didn't happen here. All in all, I LOVE these guys, and they have my business as long as they are in business and I will recommend them until I am blue in the face. I am cross posting this on Yelp and everywhere else I can find! :) Thanks to the entire team at Engine Menders/Body Menders. Much love and respect! -April Hughes

Tim's Auto Service
Blessed , Got our SUV XL7 Van , back today!Tim's Auto Repair, Columbia , SCFather Tim Sr. & two Sons , Tim Jr. & JustinGreat family auto shop - they were knowledgeable and found a good matching transmission to replace our obsolete one. We feel they were honest and communicated openly about doing this big repair job! We had considered selling the car for salvage at one point before speaking to Tim Sr,Very reliable, & true to his words... The owner , Tim Sr,, went out of his way to pick up a transmission for us . He himself drove to Myrtle Beach 4 hrs away and found be that was a perfect match !Unfortunately the guys at the auto parts in Myrtle Beach , SC weren't delivering a compatible transmission on our own timeline in getting back to Miami , so Tim Sr. Drove himself to pick this up and brought back himself to Columbia, SCWe all live in Miami and very appreciative that he drive the 4 hrs to help us get it in time then worked all day Saturday so we could be headed back home.. We would recommend this family, owned and operated repair shop without hesitation !

Pope Davis Tire and Automotive
I am thankful for the people who work at Pope Davis Tire & Automotive, located at 1531 Taylor Street, downtown Columbia, SC. Ela (the administrative assistant) met me with compassion, honesty, and a cup of hot chocolate...and I am nobody special. My vulnerable state would have been easy to take advantage of: 98 Chevy in need of engine repair (not to get too specific), which included a first estimate of, at least, $1,300!The mechanic I met (please ask for a first name), met my eyes with integrity after he evaluated my car and diagnosed the problem. After decades of experience he pinpointed the problem, and it was not according to the first diagnosis: He told me the problem was less complicated, my car was worth fixing, and it would cost less. This was a pleasant surprise. So, I entrusted my trusty car to them. They dropped me off at a car rental service, took care of my car over the weekend, and delivered as promised. My car is in good shape now. What a relief! I am thankful to have done business with an automotive company of noble character.

Engine Menders
About two weeks ago my fiancé and I were headed to Charleston from Charlotte to get married! Of course on the way down, my car decided to quit on us. I knew it was the transmission! We had the car towed from where we broke down to Engine Mender. We were nervous about bringing the car to a place we have never been to but we were beyond thankful that we found this place. The owners are so down to earth and friendly. The staff was very helpful and communicated with us constantly. My car took about a week to fix and when I picked it up the staff took time to go over everything with us. Having a transmission replaced is a big deal and can be stressful if you’re not familiar with the mechanics. I am so confident they did above and beyond. My car runs so smoothly now. I am so appreciative for their services and would ABSOLUTELY recommend Engine Menders to anyone in Columbia or surrounding areas.

Pep Boys Auto Parts & Service
Since moving to Columbia over 3 years ago we have used Pep Boys on Broad River Rd. they have handled oil changes, new set of tires, idler pulley replacement, belt tensioner replacement, and air filter changes on our Trailblazer. The work is always professional as expected, but the thing that makes us keep going back is the 3 guys at the front. We have been there during non busy and crazy busy times they always handle each customer with patients and a personal concern for them and their vehicles and it shows. They are pleasant even with some difficult clients. I was in this past Good Friday and they were slammed but you couldn't tell by them because their patients and personal care for each customer didn't waiver. They remembered me and my car when I came in. I did wait awhile to get 3 things done but I understood they were busy and didn't mind. Great job guys!

Champion Automotive
Dont forget to ask for your reciept. This place hates giving anything in writing to customers. The stars given on this review are for the mechanics. The owners however are very rude. I dont not reccomend this shop solely because of how nasty and unprofessional the owners are. And all because i asked for a reciept because their cc machine does not work and they charged my account 2x for $2000 each time. They were able ti fix the issue however they flipped when i requested a receipt for the services i paid for. They told me i was being difficult and that they should have charged me more. I was shocked of how rude they were after i paid. I never write reviews but after that horrible personal experience with this shop I need to warn others. Worst customer service I've experienced in general.

Engine Menders
Engine Menders is the world's best auto shop! They are family owned here in Columbia, and are dedicated, honest, and automechanic geniuses!!! The kind of place that makes me realize I can never leave Columbia, because I couldn't find another place that compares! They've had the same mechanics working there for as long as I've been going there, they truly care about their customers individually, and have kept my 250,000 mile car going and going and going! They also do awesome high performance work too. They work on all types of cars and trucks, no job too big or little, old or new! : ) Now my whole family takes their cars there... Shane, Matt, Chris, Amber, and the rest are awesome!!! (The other reviewer is right, they really do treat you like family!)

Engine Menders
Engine Menders is deserving of the highest recommendation that I, as a client, am able to bestow upon them. I brought my 2003 PT Cruiser in after being informed by another car shop that I needed a new Coolant pump replacement which can be a costly procedure. Engine Menders under the supervision of Shane, properly diagnosed the issue my car was experiencing . Engine Menders was very meticulous in their diagnostic procedure(s) and got my car back to running the way it should be. I would also be remiss in not mentioning "KT", the customer service Rep who is" par for the course" when it comes to establishing a positive environment. Very professional and knowledgeable crew at Engine Menders. Nuff Said.

Galeana Chrysler Jeep Kia
First car was not good, they let us get another one but didn't take the price of the other car off. It wasn't our fault they sold us bad car. The car now is alot better and classier. But, they need to respect and treat their employees like they should be treated and respect their efforts and hard work and dedication and they don't do that like they should. They need all their commissions not some of it or part of it. If they sell cars, give them what they supposed to have. Somebody pocketing money, their employees not being paid fairly. It's ashamed. I have too many friends that's talking about this. The way these hard working men are being paid is unfair for the way they are dedicated.

Brown Motor Works
"I am new to the area by about 6 months. I had a difficult time finding a shop to work on Volkswagens. Finally when I called Brown, they were very friendly and of course took care of my issue. They also did some other checking which brought about a few other potential problems. This is a good service, but be prepared to open your wallet. The labor is cheaper than the dealership, but higher than a shop on the corner. But if you have a higher end car, the corner shop might not work on it or do so properly. That's the choice you have to make. Overall, friendly, clean and they will call and tell you everything that needs to be fixed. I will return and would recommend them."
Tips & Advices
You should change your oil filter whenever you change your oil, that is, approximately every 7,500 miles.
A oil filter is a device that helps remove contaminants from motor oil as it passes through the engine. A pump pushed the oil through the filter where it is strained and goes back to the engine.
High-mileage oil contains special conditioners that are said to help prevent gaskets from drying out and thus preventing leaks. This can be beneficial to engines with many miles on them.
Synthetic oil costs more than conventional oil, but the price is offset by the need for less frequent oil changes due to the oil’s durability.
Tools needed to change your own oil include jack stands or ramps, a wrench, an oil filter wrench, an oil drip pan, funnel, replacement oil filter, and replacement oil.
