Palmetto Pediatric & Adolescent Clinic
There are not many family physicians or pediatric offices in the Northeast of Columbia, so this seems to be where many people take their children. And I mean MANY. When my daughter was born last year we had to go back into the hospital about 5 days later for some treatment. Our follow-ups were to take place at PP and we could not get in for an apt. The answering service continued to put us through to voicemail, and we had difficulty getting our messages returned for an apt. Dumb and frustrating, especially when it's regarding a newborn! Once our daughter was well and we needed to schedule a "Well" visit, they wouldn't answer the phone for those either, but continued to receive voicemail. You have to push "Sick" to get anyone on the phone. 9 Months later I am calling to schedule a 9-Month-Checkup and Shots and they cannot get us in until January! That's 3 months from now.... Really!? I understand booking out- but for 3 months and they have a number of doctors?? She'll be a year old by then, and will need those shots too. We're going to be seen by the downtown office, and after that I am switching care. I spoke with my sister-in-law and she is also looking to transfer to a new practice from Palmetto Pediatrics.I would also say that their front desk staff can be slightly rude if you question them. They'll tell you to go to a specific colored room to wait, and ha- the doorways are one color and the walls inside are another- so every mom is confused as to which room they're supposed to go and wait in! If you've been here, you probably know what I'm referring to.(Btw- Dr. Caviness was great, if you can ever get in.)

Great place for well visits, not for sick visits! Called to schedule sick visit for my daughter that had extreme headache. I had just dropped daughter off to school and was planning to schedule an appointment for her to be seen later in the morning. The admin staff did schedule my daughter for an afternoon appointment; however, nurse returned call to respond to my questions...such as do I give tylenol, monitor level of pain...instead she said that she was going to send EMT to my daughter's school. I was not sure how to respond to this suggestion, but I did ask to be allowed to pick my daughter up from school and bring her into the office. I was told to take her directly to the ER. After waiting hours at ER, I called the office again and asked to be seen at the original afternoon appointment time and was told that the appointment had been cancelled and there were not any other sick appointments available. I then asked if my daughter could be seen by another doctor in the practice (there are 17 doctors in this practice) and I was told no once again. To sum it up, we waited hours in the ER (and incurred a $1,600 bill) just to find out that my daughter had a fever and, possibly, a virus. I have since reported this to my daughter's pediatrician and she did not seem to care enough to listen, much less to make any changes to current office procedures (i.e. requiring a doctor's approval before sending patient to ER) or issue an apology. I have requested a copy of my daughter's records and will never again allow her to receive substandard care from this practice!
I am rating the practice as pretty good overall. However, management of the practice leaves a lot to be desired. Can't tell you how many times I have called and simply can not get a body, even the operator, to answer a phone call. I tried at 4:25 every extension possible and suddenly got the answering service. One of the most difficult practices I've ever had dealings with in regards to getting someone to answer a call. Their phones are so screwed up that when you opt out to the operator to a "0", you go to dead air and the call just hangs in never never land. Really enjoy the new PA, but simply and absolutely HATE the management of the practice and phone situation. Now that PFM is part of Lexington Medical Center, their billing is even screwed up too. Got a bill for a first time visit and when I got it, i was already in the 31-60 cycle showing I was late. NEVER had seen that charge before and could never get a straight answer as to why I was late on the first bill.
Dr. Smith has lost has passion. I used him for 25+ years, then he got to where he doesn't listen to his patients, spends maybe 3 or 4 mins. with them, and doesn't respect any of the knowledge they possess about their own bodies and issues. Ask him a simple question one time, his response was "lots of things cause that." !!!???? That's his attitude now. I had to leave him for a doctor who at least listened to me and cared enough to discuss options and different procedures instead of just a "one way only" path which of course had to be his. I noted to him about a med I was one was raising my triglycerides, he flatly denied it until I showed him from the drug manufacturers own website that I was correct. Changed the meds and my triglycerides fell by over 50% and have been in line ever sense. There are many other issues too numerous to site. He's just burned out. Find a younger more eager doctor than Johnny Smith @ Lex. Family Practice.

Dr. Christie Thomas in the Lexington practice is one of the best physicians we've ever met! I am a medical professional & I'll say this.....'you can go to the SAME practice but receive totally different care!' As this is for the Lexington branch of Sandhills. We've always seen Dr. Thomas who is, without doubt, exceptional! I've had my child seen for a regular cold all the way thru being hospitalized for an infection ravaging her body & Dr. Thomas was professional, caring, intelligent, wanted the parent(s) involved & much more. There is a male physician in this same practice who I I wouldn't refer anyone to! I guess 'different strokes for different folks?' We must not be his type of 'folk?' :)

Not perfect, but nowhere near these other reviews. I've almost always received a call back the same day. I've always been able to get a same day appointment. Dr. Nunnery and his nurse Aimee are excellent. I've also never had any issues with the front staff either. I've had x-rays done, lab work done, and an ultrasound done. In all aspects, I was treated with professionalism and kindness. We have had a few issues with refills pre-authorized but with as strict as Big Pharma and the Insurance Companies are getting about meds, I can understand. As long as Dr. Nunnery and Aimee stay the same, I'll continue being a satisfied patient.
