My lady and I walked into the Girl & the Goat at 7ish on a Friday night with no reservation and were eating within 45 minutes, sure we were at the bar but it wasn't long after that that the hostess called our name for a table. We decided to stay at the bar and let a friend I'd bumped into take the table but, like I said, 7 on a Friday night and less than an hour wait is not something that can be complained about. The only thing I didn't love about this place was the space itself. I felt like the decor was a bit disjointed, exposed brick, charred wooden planks, reclaimed wrought iron fire place dealies gives most of the restaurant a rustic feel that much of the menu shares but the bar area did not. That being said, this place is amazing. I'm a big fan of the smaller shareable plates style of eating so that was a winner for me. My date and I started with a loaf of fresh baked bread with a Wisconsin beer cheddar and a plate of oysters that were light and delicious. From there we ordered a few plates to share; pan fried shisheto peppers, sauteed skate, wood roasted pig face, and a goat belly served with lobster and crab meat that simply melted in your mouth. Everything was perfect from the cocktails to the food to the service. Get here soon.
I love the cakes and cupcake and have recommended this bakery to many friends and relatives because of the great cakes. To my surprise upon a recent visit the counter attendant who was helpful in assisting me with my purchases packaged my baked goods in a box that was only fit to be thrown out! It had fingerprint smudges over the box and writing and doodleson it. I kindly ask the young lady to give me a fresh box because the presentation was just as important as the goods inside, especially when spending a nice sum of cash for your purchases. She complied but definitely demonstrated a truly perturbed attitude. Stephanie, train your staff that great customer service extends to not only assisting customers in a cordial manner, but presentation is key even down to packaging. One thing to make fabulous "slap yo mamma" food, but if it is not packaged well all goes to naught. Invest in some better containers add a holiday motif during the holiday for folks to remember your bakery. You can't blow up large when you and staff operate like its your home kitchen and you aren't marketing your goods in a better way. Even Dunkin Donuts invest a little in there packaging.
The view and decor of this place make the dining experience highly memorable. For that alone, its worth trip. Take all that away though, and you have an very average Cheesecake Factory...minus cheesecake even being on the menu. I probably wouldn't dine here as my first choice but I would give a fair recommendation to anyone seeking to try it out. Drinks & Appetizers The drinks were highly over priced. I ordered one of their signature drinks and it tasted like sugar water. However, they happened to make a Lemon Drop Martini the exact way my wife likes it so they get a pass on this round. We also ordered crab cakes as an appetizer and I have to say that the Sam's Club brand of homemade crab cakes taste better. #KanyeShrug. Entrees I ordered the Shrimp Scampi and it was good. I'd order that again. The shrimp were seasoned to perfection and the pasta sauce was very flavorful. My wife ordered the Chicken Ravello and substituted the chicken for salmon. She was satisfied and enjoyed her meal, but not overly impressed. So if you take her drink and my entree, you have the perfect combination.
4.25 Stars. This was our second visit picking up and bringing the pizza home. Nancy and I ordered the "Michael's Special" which is cheese, sausage, mushroom, green pepper and onion. An important point worthy of note is that it was as consistently good this time as it was last time. This being the case we felt a review appropriate. We ordered a medium (14 in?) thin crust and there was enough left for another person had one been present to join us. Everything was fresh and the pizza sauce was especially good with a characteristic signature of sweet properly proportioned. Though the title states Pizzeria before Tavern if you didn't know better you would mistake it for a sports bar, with a long bar and over 20 large screen television sets positioned all over the premises. For me to rate 4 stars - particularly with all the pizza places that abound in Chicago is unusual, if the drinks are as good as the pizza I can see myself hanging out here on the less than frequent occasions I have some free time.
Went for lunch at Atwood for the total experience. Great location in a historically vital building. Charming interior. Ezcellant service. But the food was mediocre to just plain poor. The appetizer of calamity was passable. The trout salad was terrible including brown tinged apple slices. Microscopic cubes of smoked trout, over toasted corn nuts. Corn nuts? What are they thinking? Greens that were pale pieces of tired, which without a mix of greens is just plain bitter. The gelato had the texture and taste of cheap ice cream with frozen hard berries. Come on folks this is Chicago- prime time, not some suburban or small town hamlet venue trying to be " gourmet". Is it because you get so many tourists, you think you can get away with swill? Shame on you. Overall very limited choices, very uninspired. It is easy to source amazing food in the City. What is the problem? I am so sorry that the special luncheon with my daughter was such a flop.
I've been to this place a few times over the years and I really enjoy going there every time. The food is great and it has very nice, friendly staff. Not to mention great beer! The only slight grievance I would have concerning a most recent visit was that I ordered something that was "on special" for that night, but when we got the bill, the price was the same as it would ordinarily be. I called later and talked to a staff member to make sure we were not overcharged and she confirmed that was indeed the price and said the special of the night more refers to the featured dish of the night. However, she also stated that this dish was available all the time. I find this slightly misleading and suggested they perhaps say, "featured dish of the evening" or something, as "special" implies a lesser price for that day. Either way, I would return there again for sure and hope to in the near future!
Just had an office party. Aurelios dropped the ball on this one. Was quoted one price when we placed the order and at time of pick up we were given a more expensive price. Cashier said it was due to the extra toppings on the pizzas. How this happened is a mystery to me because the girl who took the order repeated it back to me verbatim. Part of our order was for three cheese and sausage pizzas. We were given three cheese only pizzas. When we complained, we were told the best they (Aurelio's) could do was make three new cheese and sausage pizzas and pick up the three cheese pizzas. Kind of hard to do when you have some forty people lined up to eat. I was never directed to the manager even though I asked at the beginning to talk to one..... I guess they were too busy to take my call. Customer service skills are lacking and for the next office party we will be looking for a new place. Anyone have any suggestions....
Dapper's is an amazingly warm place that I love so much, I come each week with my business team. If you want the best service in town, ask for Esperanza, a wonderful woman who always welcomes you with a smile and she remembers your favorite drink which she has ready almost as quickly as you sit down. It's easy to get used to your 'normal table' and your 'favorite dish'. The owner is always at the front of the house, he and his wife are charming. If you support family run restaurants and really want to feel good from a delicious meal and delightful people, this is the place to go. It is amazingly affordable as well. Almost every dish comes with a free soup as well. Dappers East has grown to be 'our' place. I hope you have the opportunity to make it yours
Food is amazing but the wait can be long and the service unpredictable. This is a frequent stop for my family and I when we want to enjoy a nice sit down meal. We have enjoyed every dish we've ordered, which has included: fish and chips, chicken piccata, the BLT sandwich, and the chop house burger. The salads are also excellent, as are the selection of desserts, that is, if you have room. the portions are usually enough to share with 2-3 people. We tend to order three dishes and share them among 4 adults. The second floor location is also really nice, as some of the seating overlooks michigan ave. Be prepared to wait, but know that the food is worth the wait!
My family and I have been going here for years and while the service isn't always the best, the pizza never disappoints. We also usually order a large salad for the entire table and it's also very good. We order the deep dish with cheese and tomatoes (chunky sauce) on top of the pizza, which is how all their pizzas are made. We rarely order toppings because we love the cheese and tomatoes so much, but we have enjoyed the sausage a few times, as well as the pepperoni. The crust is flaky and well cooked each time and the cheese is flavorful and just the right texture. Definitely worth checking out, whether you're a Chicago native or out of towner.
