Holiday Exxon
COLLEGE STUDENTS BEWARE. I recently took my vehicle for a routine state inspection at Holiday Exxon and can tell you first hand this establishment is a complete scam. The mechanic failed my vehicle for having a brake light out and a inner tie rod being loose. He attempted to charge me close to $250 for parts and labor. I refused to allow them to make the "repairs" due to skepticism in his explanation as to why my vehicle failed. Upon further inspection by myself and my hometown mechanic, my vehicle passed with flying colors- absolutely no repairs needed. Not only that, the bulb beneath the rear light cover that was supposedly out did not even exist. The line of bulbs simply ended and a light was not out nor was there even a place for a bulb where the mechanic claimed there was one. This establishment is a total scam and should be avoided by all, especially college students.

Merchant's Tire and Auto Service Center
This morning I ordered an oil change with tire rotation. When I picked up my car, I noticed that the rotation had not been performed. The shop manager quickly fixed the problem and admitted that his techs had removed the tires and checked the pressure but failed to rotate them. Best of all, and quite unexpectedly, he comped the entire cost of the ticket. I've always had competent, professional service at this Merchant's, but the quality of my experience today far exceeded my expectations. Well done.

International Imports
Do everything in your power to stay away from this place totally unethical business practices...believe me, I know, as I have dealt with them regarding 3 different Saabs that I have owned. Unfortunately, no one around here has ever worked on Saabs even before they stopped making them! Would not have given them one stat, but had to for any kind of rating.

C & R Auto Service
It is so rare to find an auto shop that is more concerned about customer service and "doing the right thing" than they are about making a buck. C&R patiently answered all of my questions. They were straightforward and honest. I will definitely go back! Thank you C&R!

Airport Road Auto Center
BEWARE: DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE- THEY ARE AWFUL!!!!If there was a way to give this company negative stars then I would because they don't even deserve 1 star! I brought my car here to be serviced and have the brakes replaced. Whoever replaced the brakes on my car did not install the brake caliper bracket correctly and the never tightened the bolts. So, of course, we had no idea of knowing what a terrible job they did so we paid for the service and drove off. 3 days later my husband was driving the car and suddenly the brakes locked up on him and the car made a sharp right turn which caused him to loose control of the car and ran off the road. Apparently what happened was that the bolts came off which caused the front right assembly to fall off the breaker, essentially causing the right break to fail completely. Thank God that he was on a back road, if this were to have taken place on a highway or busy road this could have easily killed him or someone else on the road. The car was in such terrible condition that he had to have it towed to the nearest auto shop. Once inspected at the auto center the technician noticed that the left bolt was also loose! I cant even imagine how horrible of an accident it could have been if both bolts came off at the same time! To simply say that they did a poor job is a huge understatement. They neglected to do their job properly potentially could have lead to a very serious accident that could have resulted in personal injury and even death. When I called to explain what had happened to the owner he said it was "human error and that it was similar to going to a restaurant and getting food poising"! Seriously, the owner of this auto center just compared my husband having a potentially deadly car accident to food poisoning?!!? Not only did they do a terrible job on my car but they also have ZERO customer service. IF YOU VALUE THE SAFTEY OF YOURSELF AND OTHERS ON THE ROAD THEN DO NOT BRING YOU CAR HERE!!!

Straight Up Automotive Service
I am not from the Charlottesville area. My Envoy broke down and towing service recommended them as one of the beet in the area. I am pleased the customer service was outstanding, and I am difficult to please. Being a female I have trust issues with mechanics, but they quickly put me at ease. Quickly assessed problem, showed me the damaged areas and went over costs. They did all the repairs which included new alternator, and replacement of leaking water pump, I added an oil change and coolant refill. All work was completed the same day and with no surprises. The owner Dave did the repairs personally and took care of checking my tires and putting air in all of them. I left feeling like I had a great day and had made some new friends. I also received a price break for my military status. They give a discount to active duty and retired military. Thank you Dave and team for making an upsetting emergency feel like a fun field trip and getting me back on the road, no emergency lodging overnight required. Charlottesville is lucky to have you!!
Tips & Advices
Among the common scams pulled are needless repairs, where a garage charges you for work that isn't necessary. Another popular one is attracting customers through a cheap oil change or tire pressure check. Then, when you your car is being repaired, they give you a long list of other corrections they'd like to make, therefore boosting the total cost of your bill. The best way to combat these types of problems is getting a written estimate before work is done so you can see how much repairs are expected to cost. If the final bill is higher than the estimate projected, ask to specifically see the work. Make sure information is put in writing as well. If a problem remains, you can have proof that work was not done to your satisfaction.
For winter driving, features such as the defroster, heater and exhaust system are paramount. Look in your owner's manual for specific directions on how features should be checked and repaired. Many newer cars have a cabin air filter that can be replaced when needed, allowing warm air to continue to flow in. Also, check tires before winter driving, as they need to be at the proper pressure to perform well on snow and ice.
In the spring and summer, you want to be sure your air conditioner and cooling systems work correctly. Given the high temperatures, overheating is a common problem. Look over the system by ensuring there is enough coolant available. If it needs to be refilled, it is best to open the hood and add more to the car before it gets too warm out. Also, clean out fan ducts and other ventilation sources necessary for summertime driving.
Some fixes to your car can be done without paying a specialist. Issues like replacing oil and air filters are relatively simple, with instructions provided in the owner's manual on how to make these changes. The same goes for replacing broken windshield wipers or burnt-out headlights. Such issues should be repaired quickly to guarantee safety, but don't require a visit to a garage.
Yes. Not every type of auto repair work needs to be done by a certified mechanic. You can fix some of a vehicle's issues just by paying attention to how the automobile is running and having a basic understanding of auto repair. Look over the ways weather may impact your car and what preventative measures you can take to avoid having to take it into the shop.
