My boyfriend and I found Elaine's by accident when stopping in Chapel Hill for dinner on a recent cross-country road trip (check out our trip blog, ""A Mini & A Map""), and what a happy accident it was! We ate there on a Thursday night during the summer around 5:30, and it was nearly empty when we arrived. Our waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. Our appetizer -- an heirloom tomato plate with 3 different salts on the side -- was beautiful on the plate as well as delicious. My boyfriend's buffalo steak was wonderful, and the truffled creamed corn underneath the fish I ordered was mouth-watering. A perfect, romantic meal, topped off by good espresso that powered us through an all-night drive. We both loved Elaine's and, after 6 weeks of eating out on the road, it remains in our top 3 meals for the entire trip (which included some pretty nice restaurants in some major U.S. cities).

This is one of the best restaurants in Chapel Hill! I noticed a few complained they had to wait too long and that's because it's good!!! Awesome pizza, salads, and draft beers!

A bastion of New Southern cuisine. I've lived in NYC for years and pride myself on being a foodie. This place is one of my top three favorite restaurants I've ever been to. Now that I've returned home to Chapel Hill I find myself trying to go here at least twice a month (if money were no object it would be once a week!). The food is always spot on but more importantly Bill Smith honors the memory of Bill Neal with his strong belief in Southern terroir. The vast majority of the food you eat was grown in Chatham County, the milks and creams in Orange. No potatoes coming in during the winter? He makes rutabaga and makes it incredibly tasty. The atmosphere is friendly with Smith often leaving the kitchen to greet tables. I remember the last time he came out and offered a woman having banana pudding another serving if she would like it. As far as dishes go I highly recommend the Southern pate, the cheese pork, and for the adventurous the sweetbreads sauteed in wild turkey (in Winter anyway). \r If you are in Chapel Hill and haven't tried this place, I beg you to go and give it a go.

I've used Nantucket to cater several functions at my office and was impressed each time. They were very responsive to all my requests and the food was delicious. These people are professionals and won't let you down.\r \r

I've been here for afternoon tea, & while not perfect, it was definitely much better than what Deporpoise wrote about. The service was adequate but not very friendly. We too had a guest cancel but they did not make a big deal about it nor charge us for that person. All the teas I tried were quite flavorful, and the food plentiful. I especially enjoyed the blueberry scones with Devonshire cream & lemon curd, as well as the chocolate-covered strawberries. The sandwiches weren't my favorites I've ever had at tea, but were still tasty. The atmosphere is classic for tea and quite relaxing. We were not rushed at all, & I would love to go again.

I love going to R&R! This father-son restaurant has a great food menu and an even better drink menu. There is a huge outdoor patio. If ever you can't get a table at Top of the Hill then go to RnR. It's also a great place to watch the game. My favorite item they have is the RnR Salad. I think it's the best salad in town; it has turkey, walnuts, grapes, blue cheese, onions, yum yum. It's the only salad in town that actually fills you up. Their drink menu is very creative and diverse. Love it!

This has become my favorite Chapel Hill restaurant over the past few months. The food is of a style, taste, and quality that meets or exceeds the cuisine of many high-end, $$$$ restaurants in the Triangle area without the high-end price.\r \r The pate fois gras is a perpetual favorite of my wife ... she orders it every week. The golden beet and goat cheese salad has a beautiful presentation and wonderfully balanced taste. The menu varies by season and takes advantage of local purveyors where possible. The Italian meatballs and meat sauces are made with three different meats and are some of the best I have ever tasted. There is a vegetarian rissotto that can come as appetizer or entree that I highly recommend. The wine list has good balance in quality and range and is moderately priced.\r \r Overall, in my opinion, this is the best upscale food for the money in the Triangle area. I think the prices could be higher if the owner was not also making good money next door with his EXCELLENT pizza and calzones. I recommend you eat here whenever you can.\r

I have been going to Margaret's for years. You can't get better, fresher more unique Tex Mex food anywhere in the surrounding area. They offer alot of vegan and vegetarian selections, which is why I originally tried the restaurant. They buy local when they can and use organic ingredients. Yummy!

Carolina Coffee Shop is my favorite place to eat in Chapel Hill by FAR! As a UNC student, it's so nice to eat there with friends, go there for lunch and a study session, etc.! The service is always excellent, and the food/menu options are amazing as well. I always have trouble deciding what to order because everything is incredible! Also, if you enjoy sweet tea...GET IT HERE! It's always awesome. In short, EAT HERE! You'll never regret it!!!!

The welcoming staff make me feel as if I’m coming back home. The food is prepared as if I am royalty. The servers are extremely knowledgeable of the menu and wine list. The atmosphere is an oasis --from the outdoor garden patio to the private rooms to the warm dining area. This charming restaurant will not disappoint. I have been coming here for almost two years for all occasions - family dining, celebrations and night life music and I have never had anything less than a wonderful experience. And if you have the opportunity to meet the owners, you will find they go out of their way to make sure your dining experience is second to none. Relaxing in the afternoon, charming in the evening and exciting in the evening makes this a five star dining experience if you are looking for everything from elegance to excitement.

Fiesta Grill is amazing! From specialty burritos to fajitas to the typical taco & enchilada, I have not found a better Mexican restaurant in NC. Originally from California, I had heard that Mexican food on the east coast wasn't anything to write home about. That was until I went to Fiesta Grill. Their staff is friendly and while the restaurant is sort of small, it is always worth the wait. (And, make sure to save room for the deep fried ice cream for dessert!)
19.Cypress On The Hill

This was our first time at the restaurant. The menu is a novel take on American dishes with appealing touches. My pan-seared foie gras was beautifully balanced by grapefuit slices and port sauce. For the entree I had an amazing pork shoulder confit, with sweet potato puree and collards--all surrounded with spicy pecans and bourbon jus. The wines and desserts were spectacular. Our server, Joshua W., was low-key, friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. His service added a lot to the meal. In our judgment, this restaurant goes right up there with the best the Triangle has to offer.

Can't beat the atmosphere, service is good, food is good but... but with the prices the food should be magnificant and it isn't consistantly so. Personally I'd rather have tasty food than attitude but if money doesn't matter...

Wow! fabulous place. The dishes were really fresh. I didn't love the sweet tea, but hey, it's not particularly a Chinese drink : ) Prices were a 'little' high, but seriously, I had 2 meals in leftovers after we left the restaurant. And that's with me being pregnant, so, you know I was chowing down. I say, it was def. worth it. I saw a lot of people doing to-go orders, and I am sure we will be too because they were so so quick. Waiter was very friendly but not in an annoying way, place was super duper clean, romantic as well as great family atmosphere. My husband is vegetarian, and they will make any dish with tofu instead of meat (well, except l the Kung Pao chicken, etc, of course : ) ) so this was a HUGE plus for us since he usually orders the same thing at any Asian restaurant- and got to try out some new dish.....\r We had a little bit of a hard time finding the place, though with Google maps-- It's in the Harris Teeter shopping center, FYI.

When it comes to sushi these guys do it right. We've tried several other places around and no one even comes close to Akai Hana. Their rolls are always fresh and I've never tried one I didn't like. Definitely try the crispy shrimp roll, very tasty. Best of all the price is very reasonable, not to mention they have some killer specials. The best place in Chapel Hill to get sushi!!!

The stacks of hickory wood out back are the first hint. The tea only comes sweet would be the second. This place is the real deal. To be honest, I've never strayed from ordering the pulled pork, so can't comment on anything else, but it is the best I've ever had. Try to go most every time I'm in Chapel Hill, but they seem to take long vacations from time to time. Call before you go!

Reading through these reviews reminded me that TOTH is the place CHers love to hate. They all seem to think it's unimaginative to go there, but I must say, it's a great place to take a friend visiting town for the 1st time. I've found that the specials are somewhat touch & go, but most of the ones I've had have been great. Personal favorites include the fried chicken plate, the Baja Chicken Salad, the Old Well White, & the Sweet Potato Cheese Fries. Great place to hang out w/ friends, creative entries.

Love this place! They have a great variety of breakfast foods & all the plates have lots of options for sides. Prices are good, & now that they accept credit/debit cards, there's nothing to complain about! We've always had great attentive service. It's small, so you may have to wait occasionally, but I've never been disappointed.

Spice Street is an artful representation of the confluence of diverse peoples in modern America. Something about the eating experience is mystical. It must be the physical set-up - the high ceilings, the fountain of water, the relationship of lighting and space, the Arabic food - that makes me feel I am eating fruits in the garden of Eden. The menu, the interior design, the wait and culinary staff merge the whole world in one kitchen and dining room. Some think the colors, sounds, and smells fight, but I see a microcosm of the mosaic that is Chapel Hill. What an appropriate restaurant to have in this town. It is a total testament to our cosmopolitan, open-minded, forward-moving community. \r \r The food service is simply remarkable. The staff gave me a tour behind the scenes. I inspected the kitchen and the two room-sized fridges. The kitchen is at the heart of the restaurant. It is meticulously organized and clean. The vegetable storage is stocked with fresh, whole produce - pyramids of romaine lettuce, eggplant, okra, chickpeas, parsley, cilantro, tomatoes, russet potatoes, zucchini, green chili, red bell peppers, yellow squash, onions, yardlong beans. Raw black and white chocolates and custards sit behind a smaller glass fridge. In the meat storage are packages of fresh squid, beef steaks, whole chicken. The head baker kneads dough and bakes pastries and bread in a large oven in the center of the kitchen. If you imagine that Spice Street is overpriced, you do undercredit the freshness of the food and the authenticity of its preparation. Seven dollars for a Fatouche Salad is a pretty good deal, considering that Spice Street has ""kept it real,"" or at least as real as it can get on Estes Drive.\r \r I recommend that you have lunch or dinner at Spice Street. You would have a luxurious and delicious experience, but just as important, you would patronize the local color(s)!
