Ten years ago I hired Mountain Shadow Marine to design and install a 340 gallon in my home office. I'm still very pleased with the company and they have gone out of their way several times to help me with equipment. They have replaced at no cost equipment that was out-of-warranty on a R/O Housing and a Ice Cap Ballast. Randy Olsen has also indicated that if I experience a power outage, they would provide a electrical generator to keep my tank going. This is something that I'm sure no other custom design company would provide for their customers. MSM is very knowledgeable and always willing to answer any questions regarding new advancements in the trade. Their pricing is very fair and I couldn't be more pleased with my tank.
I have been in the hobby for about 30 years. A lot of stores have opened and closed during that time. MSM has been very professional and reasonable since the first day I walked into the store. I have even hired then to come to my house and maintain my 165 gallon salt water aquarium. I have the utmost trust in Dusty, Jeff, and the rest of the crew. I do not shop anywhere else!
Go check them out and see for yourself. I just had them build me a flatbacked 245 gallon reef and it turned out better than I could have expected. Great experience throughout from design to filling it with fish and coral. Randy is a get it done kind of guy and really makes things work and when Jeff and the other guys installed it it was like clockwork. They were very detailed, fair and upfront and they even finished under their estimate for both time and money, unheard of! I did my research, checked out the other stores and so called "reef experts" and it is obvious I made the right choice with Mountain Shadow Marine. They are the best in Salt Lake, in Utah for that matter at big aquarium and I would not have trusted anyone else. If you are looking into saltwater take my advice, use MSM.
I have been in the hobby for 20 years, lived in four states and I must say this shop is one of the best. Dusty is always great to work with and help me learn from my many many mistakes. Jeff rebuilt my pump with the skill of a surgeon after Randy talked me out of buying a new one...yea, he actually told me I did not need to spend more money just replace the seals in my old one. Honest guys with a sound operation, good healthy fish and coral and genuine advice. With all the online rubbish out there its great to have a place that I can go to and trust.
Horrible customer service. We walked in the front door with our to scale sketches excited and happy to start our hobby. We were the only customers there and said we were looking to build a saltwater tank. The owner smugly replies back as he reclines in his chair "give me a guess how much do you think this is gonna cost..." he goes on to spew out "people come in here saying they want sharks and all sorts of over the top things and they don't even know what they are talking about". Then in his cavalier aggressive tone he demands "give me an idea of size of the tank you want".
"1,000 gallons" I replied.
"Do you even realize the acrylic alone will cost you $60,000.00!"
Disappointed and offended I said to him "I've heard enough! I don't like your attitude and I will not do business with you. I turned to my partner and said "let's get out of here" we left.
GREAT SERVICE and EXTREMELY KNOWLEDGEABLE!
Dusty has been helping me with my 65 gallon reef aquarium since the get go. He is extremely knowledgeable and has really helped me create my first reef aquarium.
Thursdays through Sundays are retail days and it's always fun to go in to the store and get information from the staff. They are always willing to stop what they're doing to share their knowledge!
The place is a bit off the beaten path, but definitely worth it!
If you don't want to maintain your own tank, this is the place to go. They do an excellent job setting up and caring for saltwater tanks. Some say the owner, Randy, can be a little hard to work with. But actually he is extremely knowledgeable and knows what he's doing. His bottom line is the maintenance side of the business. He is not concerned about the retail side of the business and only has the store open from Thursday-Sunday. Go in to the store with the understanding that his business is maintenance, not retail. And he is opening the shop just to make it possible to order and keep more fish available for his maintenance business, then you might understand him and his small shop a little better. The fish he has are beautiful and priced well. They always copper the fish for 2 weeks before selling. I have never lost a fish that I bought from them.
