I personally had a great experience with Rusty's. My mom lives in CA and her car was totaled in an accident. Her car was towed to a local towing company who was charging her $34/day for keeping the car there. She wouldn't be able to get access to the title for 3 days because it was locked in a safe deposit box and she didn't have the key immediately available. So i wanted to see if a junkyard could give us cash for the car and take it from the current towing company the same day. I was at work so I had limited time to find a junkyard. I put my information in several junkyard websites....Rusty's was the first one to contact me first thing in the morning. Initially we communicated via email and i sent pictures & description of car. Within minutes i got a call with an offer. They promised they could pick up the car that same day and we could just mail or bring the title to their towing company's office and we would receive the payment. I agreed and they picked up car within hours as promised. I also received emails from them with information about how to fill out the title and a formal letter with the agreed upon offer and directions to the towing company's office so we can drop off the title and receive payment. We had no problem when we arrived at the office with the title we got our check for the agreed upon offer. Only thing is i was in time constraints so i didn't negotiate and i didn't get to shop around to compare offers to see if another company would give me a better cash amount. But i just went with them because they said they would get the car picked up for free that same day. But their service was honest, extremely professional, and very fast and efficient. I was thoroughly impressed with how smoothly everything went. After reading numerous bad reviwes for other junkyard companies i didn't expect to have a positive experience so i was pleasantly surprised by rusty's service. I would highly recommend this company.

Definitely a quick and easy way to get rid of an unwanted vehicle, and the driver had the check in his hand before I could shake it. There was only one hiccup in the whole process, and that was the scheduled pick-up time. The driver was supposed to arrive between one and four p.m., and call within an hour before actually arriving. What actually happened was that on the day of the removal we were awakened by our doorbell at 6:45 a.m. in the morning. After dragging my half asleep and disabled body to the front door, I saw a young gentleman donning a clipboard, standing about fifteen feet away from the door (he had probably backed up as a result of our dogs viciously barking). I assumed it was one of the local college students canvasing the neighborhood for work again, and just crawled back into bed. It was too early and I was too groggy to make the connection. At 6:50 a.m. the phone rang, but it went to voicemail before I could stagger to the phone. After checking the caller ID, which just read “1-800 Service”, and returning the handset to the base, I caught a glimpse through the living room window of a truck cab. It had a sign on the side which ironically read “Where to Go” on it. After closer examination I realized that it was a flatbed and the towing service to make the vehicle pick-up. The driver was very courteous and polite, but no explanation or apology was given for the unorthodox timing. I can only assume the driver was making the pick-up during his daily commute to the salvage yard, which was located some sixty miles away… or something like that. Despite the early morning interruption, I was glad to get rid of the car early and that I didn’t have to wait by the phone all afternoon. I would not let this experience detour me from using this service again in the future.

They were very quick to respond to my email requesting a quote, and their follow up after the quote was great. If I was rating on that alone they would get 5 stars from me, where it fell apart was once I accepted their offer and set up a time for the car to be picked up no one ever showed up, I called and they were very nice about it and rescheduled for 2 days later which again no one ever showed up to get the car as promised. I called a 3rd time and was told someone would call me within 30 mins but no calls... So I resubmitted on line and got called again, I explained what has transpired they were very apologetic and rescheduled an additional pick up, I asked this time for the towing company that they were working with and got their number as well. I called the towing company directly and was told they have been trying to call me, we then checked the info that Rusty's gave them (now mind you I sent my information On Line so they had the correct info.) and Rusty's sent the towing company totally wrong information and numbers. Once this was addressed the car was finally picked up a week later than was first supposed to be. Need to slow it down a little bit and make sure they are relaying the correct information. Other than that was a good experience, a little frustrating but worked out.

1st never do what I did. I contacted a few companies for this process. By phone and web sites. The people who actually contact for pick up and remove the vehicle are contracted. The check was written to me out of the cab of the truck. I was very uneasy with that process and almost told them to drop the car. After the vehicle left, I started receiving calls from other pick up companies and was totally confused. That was my fault because these pick up guys are contracted and most of them had no clue who they were actually picking up for. Needless to say after back tracking by phone as to who I did the business with, it was Rusty`s. Now I'm praying the check out of the cab clears the bank because the cell phone number on the check is no good. Being frustrated and needing the car gone did not help my situation. Overall so far, Rusty`s was great, professional and helped me verify it was them quickly. I understand the confusion with so many contracted tow companies. Rusty`s gave me thirty dollars more than the crusher would have so yea great deal.

Easy transaction. No problems. Vehicle picked up within a few days. Expected some sort of receipt - but blank check stub from an auction company is my only record of transaction. Price is negotiable - like everything else in life. ;) Seem to be a broker of sorts - so expect the typical phone room tactics and know that you are dealing with several companies if you do need to contact them after the deal is made. Note: If you care about the "restaurant / entertainment coupon" they offer in negotiations - they neglected to tell me that I would get it via snail-mail after I made a post here or on FB or Twitter. Hence - all the reviews. At least it didn't require a 5-star rating (if you don't see a follow up from me - that means it actually came). All in all - it was a smooth enough transaction. I'm pretty easy going and didn't expect much - but the attitudes of a few of the people I had to deal with along the way - and being required to make a post for something I was offered in negotiations killed any 5-star rating on my part.Colleen W.

Our experience with Rusty's Auto Salvage was very good!! They paid us over 6 times what any of the local salvage companies offered us, twice as much as the car dealer offered us in "trade-in", and Rusty offered free towing!One local company offered us 6 times LESS than Rusty, if we had the vehicle towed to them. The one local company that might have offered us more than Rusty's took over a week to return my call and make an offer.Rusty's made the deal within probably not even 20 minutes during the very first call to them. Have your car details and title handy when you call because they are ready to do business right now!Once the deal was done, they sent out a very clear set of e-mails about the details of the deal.The driver who was responsible for towing our car responded in exactly the agreed on time frame, and kept us informed as to when he could meet us at the dealer where the car was stranded. He delivered the check as promised and took the car. Further, he actually seemed to really care that he did take care of us. Tabitha C.

The people that i talked to on the phone for Rusty's were courteous and friendly. However, that is where my praise will end. The company that was in charge of picking up my vehicle, GLR, scheduled my pickup for 2pm. I called them back at 3:30 to inquire at which time he explained to me that his driver had broke down over an hour ago but had no explanation as to why he couldn't call me earlier. He asssured me that a driver was on the way and would be there no later than 4:30. At 4:30 he called me to tell me that the driver was on his way now...from a city over 45 minutes away. Actual arrival time of the tow truck? 6:45. Most significantly, the vehicle wasn't at my house. I had to make a special trip to wait with the car across town that turned into a 5 hour ordeal (7 if you include my personal travel time) in which they constantly strung me along. The only reason i give them any stars is for giving them the benefit of the doubt that they misjudged the contractor or perhaps it was a fluke. But my experience was overall terrible.

I emailed Rusty's requesting a quote and they called me literally...5 minutes later with the quote All they asked was make, year, if it had a title, keys, and whether it ran. ($350 for a banged-up 2002 cavalier with 98,000 miles and dead brake lines? I'll take it). They assured me that a tow company would call to schedule a pick up time soon. The tow company they work with was a bit slow to call. When I called them (3 hours after being quoted) to see what was up with the tow company they were very apologetic and told me that they are often overbooked but that they would do their best to send a truck out ASAP. That was my only issue.I had to leave for work but my mom said the tow truck guy was very nice and pleasant, quick with paperwork and I got my cash as quoted. The customer service was great- they were pleasant and quick to resolve my issue with the slow pick up and everything else was painless. Everyone I spoke with on the phone was pleasant and helpful and did their job well.

I was quite happy with my experience with Junk-A-Car. My wife had had her car for about a decade, and over the years it gathered some cosmetic damage, but managed to keep running without much service. After a move to MD, it passed the safety inspection, but emissions was another story. An inspection by a trustworthy garage revealed that it needed at least $2500 worth of repairs to get it through the tight emissions controls in this state. The garage would have given us $175 for the car on the spot, but I figured we'd shop around first. No dealer would give us trade-in value, so we were left with the option of trying to sell it privately, donating it, or scrapping it. Fortunately a quick call to Junk-A-Car netted us several offers, and we were able to have it towed away from our home for free, $300 richer for the experience. Great customer service made it an easy process...just give them the title and keys, they give you the check and tow it away. It's that simple. Highly recommended!

The initial call and pickup of the car went really smoothly. Unfortunately, the people who picked up the car didn't leave any paper work, so I have no receipt or anything like that. I tried calling customer service to see where the paper work was and was dropped directly into voicemail on 3 separate occasions. I finally called the pickup line and guilt-tripped the representative into letting me talk with a human being. They intern transferred me to the local company that actually did the pick up. The local company assured me they were sending out a receipt that day. It's a week later and I still don't have any paper work. I have my gift card though. :)EDIT - So, I submitted this review because they offered me another $25 gift card to give a review. A week later, I'm still fighting to get them to give me the gift card. I gave them 2 stars because they at least picked the car up. They just have problems with customer service and following through with compensation.
Tips & Advices
Salvage yards will have different policies regarding warranties, but, in most instances, the parts you find will be covered. Some salvage yards will offer warranties of anywhere from 90 days to six months, and may even offer the option for extended coverage.
After you've successfully found a part or multiple components, take everything up to the clerk. Inform them of what you have and pay. Avoid lying about what you have as a way to pay less. You will potentially be banned if you're found lying. You-pick salvage yards will display the prices for categories of parts. Prices may fluctuate depending on the demand. Harder-to-find items could carry a higher price tag than a brand-new one. If you are salvaging for auto parts, you might see items that are difficult to find and be able to sell them for a profit. Doing so can offset the cost of the price you're paying for the parts you personally need.
It is in your interest to call the salvage yard before arriving to see if they sell smaller components individually, because some yards do not. Some owners choose to not sell small components for financial reasons.  If salvage lots come across a door without the handle, they will have to pay extra to get the handle and attach it to the entire assembly. It is therefore cost-effective for salvage lots to sell entire assemblies.
When rummaging through a car or walking around the lot, stay aware of your surroundings. Remember, you aren't the only visitor looking to salvage parts. Other individuals are also looking for components, and not everyone works as safely as possible. If you find a car you'd like to inspect, make sure working conditions are suitable, and if anything looks suspicious or dangerous, find a safer vehicle to tear apart.
