"Where do I begin? Dr. Pruden and her staff are very welcoming!! I love bringing my dog, Yogi, whenever he needs the vet's attention. Dr. Pruden addresses your concerns and gives plenty of good, practical advice. She does not make you feel like a bad owner in any way. When you come here do not expect it to be a spa for your pets. I must admit, the place can use a slight makeover, but the service that is provided to your four-legged loved one is not compromised in any way. They also provide boarding services that I haven't tried yet. Oh, and if you show proof that you're a city worker, you get a 10% discount every visit. Love this clinic!!! So I've taken my dog Milo here pretty regularly for his annual exam, shots, boarding, etc. Never had a problem with the staff or service provided to me and Milo. He has been fine under their care and despite my move overseas, I still plan to keep Bed-Stuy Vet Clinic as his main vet whenever we're back in NYC."

My spouse and I had just stepped off the plane from Sacramento beginning our move to Brooklyn with dog and cat in tow. We rushed to Bedford Stuyvesant to board our furry kids - arriving about 5 minutes before they closed with our frightened pets and a dog kennel FULL of #2. (It was our pup's first flight and she was...well, a bit of a mess upon arrival and our driver was less than enthusiastic about this.) We were overwhelmed, worried about our pets and wondering what the crap we were going to do with this...dirty kennel and... where was our hotel anyway?! WHY DID WE MOVE AGAIN!? You get the picture. Joanna was incredible. Warm and friendly upon arrival and absolutely calming to us. She immediately helped our scared pup into her hotel room, tucked the cat in for the night and agreed to clean the kennel disaster that we regretfully (yet thankfully) dumped upon her in our departure. (Our driver thanks her, too.)

Last week, I took my new German shepherd pup to see the doctor. We just moved into the neighborhood and I thought let’s give it a try. I also figured, I could always drive to another vet if the experience was not what as I expected. I was a little early, so I got a chance to watch the comings and goings of the office. I watched as the staff (receptionist and Technician) interacts with the animals and humans. They were pleasant and considerate of people’s time and pets. The vet herself was knowledgeable and thoughtful about my dog and the plans for her future. I have always had animals, I have been to other offices that where nicer ( the space could use some work), that had new fancier equipment ( they could upgrade some of the equipment), but as far as knowledge goes and treatment of my animal, they were up there with doctors that cost twice as much.

Dr. Briones Saved my cat last year. she was looking very bad and i thought this was it. he did some simple tests and found she couldn't process proteins thru her kidney's any longer. he put her on a prescription diet and she was like a new cat. He is a very nice and thoughtful vet who listens to you and cares for your animal. his prices are comparable to any other vet around. he could have scammed me and made it seem more serious but didn't, he was very to the point and simple in his explanation. i dont know what the person with one star is talking about , maybe its just their particular bad experience but overall its a good vet clinic. He has always taken the time to talk to me even when i'd stop by for a quick question, non of this "well bring the cat in business" which IS a scam. My cat and I are very happy with them.

Animal Medicine & Surgery Clinic
I've been going to this vet for years, with a mean rottiweiler and a sweet beagle and they handled both. Dr. Chalkin is cool and handles the dog with care. He knows exactly what's the problem is if any. They are way cheaper then these vets in L.I. I barely had an appointment and it was never a problem for them to be seen by the doctors.. My roti won't let you come 6inches in front of him, if he didn't know you but never had a problem with dr. Chalkin, he took care of him since he was a pup. The medical assistants were good, friendly and kind to my dogs. I stopped going because I moved to Long Island and wished I didn't stop going to this vet office. I'll be going back that's for sure. Actually there were two doctors there when I was going and they were both excellent doctors. Wish they were in L.I., lol ;)

I took my cat to this vet and I was really happy with the whole experience. The staff was helpful. The vet was very gentle and thorough. My cat had a cut on his neck and the vet went over all the possible causes for him to have scratched himself or what might make him "itchy". She took the time to find out all about his diet and environment in case it was something like a detergent being used. I did have to wait a half hour past my scheduled time and it was a little more than I've paid at other vets (not in nyc though) but I'm happy to spend the extra time and money because they were really personal and helpful. I'm bringing my kitty back whenever he needs check-ups.

Ocean Side Animal Clinic
I've been going to Dr. V. Anurova for over 4 years with my 8 cats and recommend this clinic to all of my friends and coworkers, and everyone loves them! The office is very clean, prices are reasonable, and both vets working there are very knowledgeable and friendly to both, pets and humans. Staff is very friendly and helpful as well. I've never met such pleasant staff anywhere. They treat all pets with love and care. I love going to that office and recommend it to everyone! Don't waste your time looking any further, you'll be happy with Oceanside Animal Clinic!!!

I wish I found this place sooner. 2 weeks ago my cat was not eating and when i went near him he started growling. I knew something was very wrong. I called the emergency clinic and just to be seen my the vet is $97.00. I called Hope Vet and the nasty woman on the phone told me that I could come in but I would have to pay for the visit before I even walked through the door. I called the Bedford Stuyvesant Clinic. I didn't know at the time I was speaking to the doctor but she told me "Come as soon as you can". She was so sweet and was really good to my cat.

Roy J Appel DVM
Dr. Appel is an extremely dedicated, kind and knowledgable veterinarian. He will spend whatever amount time necessary to examine you pet and answer any questions you may have. The office is very clean and the staff is very professional. In the 20 years I have been bringing my pets to see him I have never once been disatisfied or displeased. Dr. Appel has morals, values and a genuine love for animals and what he does...what more could we ask for?

I brought her here because it was the closest vet in the neighborhood. Thanks to the quick test results and the compassionate care we received at this clinic, I was able to make the decision to euthanize my cat the next morning -- a decision which I know was the right decision. (It's the only decision you can make when your pet is geriatric and her quality of life is nonexistent.)
Tips & Advices
Most 24-hour clinics do not allow owners to stay with their pets overnight. However, many do have specific visiting hours or will let owners see their pets at any point during the day. In addition, owners can call most clinics at any time for an update on their pet's well being.
  • Important phone numbers, especially those of the the veterinary clinic, the animal hospital or emergency clinic, and the poison control center
  • A book detailing pet first-aid steps
  • Copy of medical records
  • Nylon leash
  • Muzzle (only use if pet is not vomiting and has no difficulty breathing)
  • Absorbent gauze
  • Nonlatex disposable gloves
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Nail clippers
  • Digital thermometer
  • Sterile saline solution
  • Hydrogen peroxide (to induce vomiting only at the recommendation of a veterinarian
  • Milk of magnesia (to absorb poison only at the recommendation of a veterinarian)
Find a 24-hour animal hospital that provides emergency services within your area. Keep the facility's contact information in a place that's easy to locate, such as the refrigerator, address book, or smartphone. Most veterinary clinics operate on standard business hours and are not equipped to handle emergencies.
Veterinary clinics operate on a smaller scale than animal hospitals. The latter are more likely open 24 hours and provide emergency services. The former generally operate on typical office hours and only perform wellness exams and minor surgeries. Veterinary clinics also do not generally perform laboratory tests on site.
The specifics vary depending on the type of visit. For a wellness exam, bring:
  • Medical records
  • The type or brand of food the pet eats
  • Medication (including flea, tick, and heartworm medication).
If the animal needs medical treatment, the following may be helpful depending on the situation:
  • Fresh stool sample
  • Vomit sample
  • Video of the pet engaging in abnormal behavior
  • Substance the pet may have ingested
