German Dreams
Fantastic air-cooled VW spot! Traveling west in my '69 Beetle from ABQ to San Francisco I started to have some mysterious sputtering engine issues somewhere West of Kingman, AZ, but managed to get to Mojave, CA for an overnight stay at the also fantastic Mojave Desert Inn (see a separate review elsewhere/somewhere!). Initially I thought I got ahold of some bad gas back in Kingman, but after fueling up with 91 octane 20 miles down the road in Tehachapi, the problem was persisting and worsening. By the time I hit stop and go traffic in Bakersfield it was obvious I was going to need some help. So I Googled "air cooled vw" on my phone and German Dreams became my dream come true. I hobbled up and was warmly greeted by George and asked what was up. Explaining that I was long distance traveling and "in a bit of a pickle", I explained my issues, noting that I had done a mini-tune on the motor that very morning in Mojave (I typically do all of my own basic maintenance on the car but once in awhile I come across a problem that I just can't seem to nail down). I knew I had an intake/vacuum leak somewhere but was unable to figure out where exactly. George listened intently, wrote up a quick work order, and assured me they'd get to it ASAP and get me back on the road THAT DAY. Granted, one can't expect to just pull up and be tended to immediately, and after all, I'd just landed right at lunchtime. But George and the others were gracious hosts and we traded VW & dog stories for the odd hour or so that it took to take care of the business ahead of me and for "reinforcements" to return from lunch. Once George pulled the car in he *immediately* honed in on the offending part -> a loose electronic idle cut-off jet on the carburetor. I thought, "duh! why didnt I think to check that?!?!" (VW nerds will know what I mean). And beyond that -> he gladly tutored me on the basics of tuning my particular carburetor (the relatively obscure, single model year/US only Solex 30 PICT-3, for which I have found NO decent reference material online - and aside from simple, one-screw idle adjustments I have done zero work on that carb for 20 odd years). So not only did I receive same-day, timely service - I also got a great lesson in some basic maintenance that was heretofore missing from my mechanical vocabulary. Furthermore, I was not handed a laundry list of parts that I didn't need - just a carb/intake manifold gasket). I was back on the road and eating In 'N Out for lunch within 2 hours and only 50 odd dollars poorer for the experience. The car ran GREAT and with GUSTO all the way back to San Francisco. So here is my shout of praise far and wide for all to hear that German Dreams is THE place to go if you own a VW. I will most definitely return even if only to say hello if I'm passing through (a Westfalia Vanagon w/ Subaru conversion is in the works as we speak.) FOREVER thankful that a VW/Porsche centric shop of this caliber and kindness exists in the world!!! THANK YOU!

Tony's Auto Repair
We passed through Bakersfield on Saturday, 12-24-2011. About 10 miles outside of town, our battery light came on and the car died shortly after. After calling multiple repair shops, Tony was the only one still working, or at least the only one who agreed to help. He was working on his brother in-laws brakes, and was actually closed. Based on the description of our problem, he ordered a battery and alternator from the parts store. They dropped them off and were leaving just as we arrived in the tow truck. We were traveling from Oregon to see family in Palmdale. If he had not fixed our car, we would have spent Christmas Eve and Christmas day in a hotel in Bakersfield. He charged a normal fair price, and got us back on the road quickly. He even gave our 3 children a gift of chocolate covered cherries.I was reminded of this event because we are selling our Suburban. I found the receipt when I was cleaning out the glove box. I appreciate his honesty, integrity, and Christian good will.

G.G. Mobile Mechanic
Total Pros! LADIES. If you need car work done, and you don't know who to trust, CALL THESE GUYS! Honest, trustworthy, knowledgeable and pleasant indeed. They arrived when they said they would. Their service was right on the money. And they were very affordable. This is a family run business and they have a lot to lose. I asked if they could find the reason my "Check Engine" light was on after they had finished my original work. He dug in and in five minutes, without the computer, he had the problem diagnosed and was off to get the necessary parts. He returned shortly thereafter and fixed the problem easy peasy. These guys are that GOOD. This comment is totally unsolicited. I've wrenched cars and trucks and farm equipment my whole life and I'm just that impressed. These are your guys! They are going to be doing a lot more work on my vehicles! P.S. If you've got a problem with these guys, I might suggest you check yourself. It's probably you who has the problem.

Cimental Mobile Auto & Truck Repair Inc
Huge shout out to Randy and his technician Mike! I came up from San Diego to another diesel performance shop, to have some specialty work done (which they did well). However, a nagging (4 years), abs, brake and airbag lights and codes could not be removed or reprogramed in the computer (other shops have tried + a dealership). The other shop recommended Cimental's. Although booked, Randy squeezed me in. Mike worked hours and ultimately solved all the issues. Randy charged substantially below their hourly rate. Their professionalism and fairness was outstanding! If I have any major issues with my Dodge 2500, I would feel most comfortable to again drive the 3+ hours to have them work on my truck

Jesse Mobile Auto Repair
Jesse saved the day. My radiator went out about 20 miles from the 166 on Soda Lake Road in the middle of nowhere. Jesse literally drove over a mountain to find me. After we realized I needed a whole new radiator Jesse drove us to Bakersfield to get a new radiator then drove us all the way back out there. He finished up at 10:00 pm and followed me out to the road just to make sure everything was running well. He also gave me a phone call the next day to double check. He's a great guy that did an excellent job and all for a more than reasonable price especially considering that he drove about 350 miles total to help me out. I highly recommend Jesse for all your auto repair needs.

Pacific Automotive
I love, love, love this place. We've been taking all of our vehicles here for years. They are very good at what they do. We've never had any problems. Only awesome, honest service. Best in town. I'll never go anywhere else. They go above and beyond. As long as they're in business this is the only place I will go and highly recommend. They've done big and little jobs for us. Transmission replacement, front/rear differentials, master cylinder replacement, gear box replacement, oil changes, the list goes on, I cant remember them all, but very reasonable prices and excellent service. I drive from out of town to bring my 3 jeeps here. Best around...seriously.

Jesse Mobile Auto Repair
I called Jesse because my vehicle was running rough and I needed a diagnosis. Jesse was able to come to my home and perform his inspection there, which kept me from having it towed somewhere. He noticed that the motor was improperly timed and that because of that, there was most likely further damage to a valve. Although it would have been nice to have the car fixed then and there, it was nice to get the diagnosis I needed to get the car back on the road. Jesse offered to complete the work at a fair price.. I was fortunate that I was not stranded but his number would be good to have just in case.... recommended!
Tips & Advices
Among the common scams pulled are needless repairs, where a garage charges you for work that isn't necessary. Another popular one is attracting customers through a cheap oil change or tire pressure check. Then, when you your car is being repaired, they give you a long list of other corrections they'd like to make, therefore boosting the total cost of your bill. The best way to combat these types of problems is getting a written estimate before work is done so you can see how much repairs are expected to cost. If the final bill is higher than the estimate projected, ask to specifically see the work. Make sure information is put in writing as well. If a problem remains, you can have proof that work was not done to your satisfaction.
For winter driving, features such as the defroster, heater and exhaust system are paramount. Look in your owner's manual for specific directions on how features should be checked and repaired. Many newer cars have a cabin air filter that can be replaced when needed, allowing warm air to continue to flow in. Also, check tires before winter driving, as they need to be at the proper pressure to perform well on snow and ice.
In the spring and summer, you want to be sure your air conditioner and cooling systems work correctly. Given the high temperatures, overheating is a common problem. Look over the system by ensuring there is enough coolant available. If it needs to be refilled, it is best to open the hood and add more to the car before it gets too warm out. Also, clean out fan ducts and other ventilation sources necessary for summertime driving.
Some fixes to your car can be done without paying a specialist. Issues like replacing oil and air filters are relatively simple, with instructions provided in the owner's manual on how to make these changes. The same goes for replacing broken windshield wipers or burnt-out headlights. Such issues should be repaired quickly to guarantee safety, but don't require a visit to a garage.
Yes. Not every type of auto repair work needs to be done by a certified mechanic. You can fix some of a vehicle's issues just by paying attention to how the automobile is running and having a basic understanding of auto repair. Look over the ways weather may impact your car and what preventative measures you can take to avoid having to take it into the shop.

Just a moment...
