German Dreams
Fantastic air-cooled VW spot! Traveling west in my '69 Beetle from ABQ to San Francisco I started to have some mysterious sputtering engine issues somewhere West of Kingman, AZ, but managed to get to Mojave, CA for an overnight stay at the also fantastic Mojave Desert Inn (see a separate review elsewhere/somewhere!). Initially I thought I got ahold of some bad gas back in Kingman, but after fueling up with 91 octane 20 miles down the road in Tehachapi, the problem was persisting and worsening. By the time I hit stop and go traffic in Bakersfield it was obvious I was going to need some help. So I Googled "air cooled vw" on my phone and German Dreams became my dream come true. I hobbled up and was warmly greeted by George and asked what was up. Explaining that I was long distance traveling and "in a bit of a pickle", I explained my issues, noting that I had done a mini-tune on the motor that very morning in Mojave (I typically do all of my own basic maintenance on the car but once in awhile I come across a problem that I just can't seem to nail down). I knew I had an intake/vacuum leak somewhere but was unable to figure out where exactly. George listened intently, wrote up a quick work order, and assured me they'd get to it ASAP and get me back on the road THAT DAY. Granted, one can't expect to just pull up and be tended to immediately, and after all, I'd just landed right at lunchtime. But George and the others were gracious hosts and we traded VW & dog stories for the odd hour or so that it took to take care of the business ahead of me and for "reinforcements" to return from lunch. Once George pulled the car in he *immediately* honed in on the offending part -> a loose electronic idle cut-off jet on the carburetor. I thought, "duh! why didnt I think to check that?!?!" (VW nerds will know what I mean). And beyond that -> he gladly tutored me on the basics of tuning my particular carburetor (the relatively obscure, single model year/US only Solex 30 PICT-3, for which I have found NO decent reference material online - and aside from simple, one-screw idle adjustments I have done zero work on that carb for 20 odd years). So not only did I receive same-day, timely service - I also got a great lesson in some basic maintenance that was heretofore missing from my mechanical vocabulary. Furthermore, I was not handed a laundry list of parts that I didn't need - just a carb/intake manifold gasket). I was back on the road and eating In 'N Out for lunch within 2 hours and only 50 odd dollars poorer for the experience. The car ran GREAT and with GUSTO all the way back to San Francisco. So here is my shout of praise far and wide for all to hear that German Dreams is THE place to go if you own a VW. I will most definitely return even if only to say hello if I'm passing through (a Westfalia Vanagon w/ Subaru conversion is in the works as we speak.) FOREVER thankful that a VW/Porsche centric shop of this caliber and kindness exists in the world!!! THANK YOU!

Bakersfield Mazda Mitsubishi
Let me tell you about our experience with a great customer service rep at Mazda. Paul Lopez. This man worked for us. After being turned down at 2 dealerships our credit isn't the best, but we have income. Paul went to work for us. Now I have to say it took some work on his part, and a lot of patience and yes we needed a cosigner. BUT he made sure my family got into a car that we could afford without over extending ourselves. We had certain parameters to be met. So he went to work with his manager and his finance manager and their team, and found a bank that would finance us. After their hard work we came in and drove home with our new car (well new to us). A 2013 Mazda CX-5. A we are in love. I never thought much about Mazda, but once Paul told us what would be in our price range, I did some research on this vehicle. The big plug was from Car & Driver Magazine online, they really raved about this car. And after 1 day having it, I can't believe this is a small SUV. Because it drives like a little sports car, with lots of great creature comforts, great gas mileage, and some serious torque and HP for a little in-line 4. So if you are in the Market for a New or Used car, consider a Mazda, and ask for Paul Lopez. You will never meet a more friendly, straight forward guy. He won't just sell you a car, he'll take care of you and your family. Thanks Paul & the Bakersfield Mazda Team. You have made a customer for life.

Tony's Auto Repair
We passed through Bakersfield on Saturday, 12-24-2011. About 10 miles outside of town, our battery light came on and the car died shortly after. After calling multiple repair shops, Tony was the only one still working, or at least the only one who agreed to help. He was working on his brother in-laws brakes, and was actually closed. Based on the description of our problem, he ordered a battery and alternator from the parts store. They dropped them off and were leaving just as we arrived in the tow truck. We were traveling from Oregon to see family in Palmdale. If he had not fixed our car, we would have spent Christmas Eve and Christmas day in a hotel in Bakersfield. He charged a normal fair price, and got us back on the road quickly. He even gave our 3 children a gift of chocolate covered cherries.I was reminded of this event because we are selling our Suburban. I found the receipt when I was cleaning out the glove box. I appreciate his honesty, integrity, and Christian good will.

Total Pros! LADIES. If you need car work done, and you don't know who to trust, CALL THESE GUYS! Honest, trustworthy, knowledgeable and pleasant indeed. They arrived when they said they would. Their service was right on the money. And they were very affordable. This is a family run business and they have a lot to lose. I asked if they could find the reason my "Check Engine" light was on after they had finished my original work. He dug in and in five minutes, without the computer, he had the problem diagnosed and was off to get the necessary parts. He returned shortly thereafter and fixed the problem easy peasy. These guys are that GOOD. This comment is totally unsolicited. I've wrenched cars and trucks and farm equipment my whole life and I'm just that impressed. These are your guys! They are going to be doing a lot more work on my vehicles! P.S. If you've got a problem with these guys, I might suggest you check yourself. It's probably you who has the problem.

Car Power Auto Sales
I have recently purchased a used 2002 Chevy Tahoe from Hector. From the first moment I called about the Tahoe Hector has been friendly and knowledgeable. He never once made me feel like he was trying to "push" a Sell on me or made me feel like I had to buy it. He was patient and gave me different financial options (which is really important to me). The atmosphere of a small family business that is welcoming was the impression I received. Any questions I had were answered with courstey. Once he received the tags and plates from the DMV, I was notified immediately. The Tahoe has been a champ! It fits the needs of my family perfectly. I would recommend Hector to family and friends for sure. The customer service is something that is important as a business person and he has it. I think that at the end of the day you should go with someone who makes you feel like a person and not just a $ sign. Thank you Hector!!!

Family Motors Auto Group
HORRIBLE customer service. I bought my VW only two years ago, and it is now starting to fall apart already (rearview mirror falling off, headrest broken, etc) and of course none of that is covered under warranty even though I DID NOT BREAK IT! Not only that, but when I call to ask a question, I never get to speak to a person, its always voicemail. Today my rearview mirror literally fell off, and, since it is illegal to drive without a rearview mirror, I called to try to get it fixed or for them to tell me how to fix it. It is now 5 hours later, and I STILL have not received a call. Quality wise, not worth the $300+ I pay every month. That, in addition to the horrible customer service, has made me decide to take my business elsewhere and trade in the vehicle. I do NOT recommend this place.

Bakersfield Mazda Mitsubishi
My husband and I were looking all over to purchase a New Car, I had been to dealerhip after dealership and over & over it was the same thing we can't help you your credit score is too low. I was just about to give up when a friend suggested Bakersfield Mazda. I went down there with my husband and we actually got qualifed and they were able to help us buy a new car. I am so happy with my Mazda CX7, the staff was so helpful with all of my husbands questions and there were a lot of them. I was givin a tour of the facility including the Service & Parts department and I ended up ordering some accessories on the spot for my new car. I thought it was so nice that there is still trustworthy dealership like Bakesrfield Mazda out there.

Cimental Mobile Auto & Truck Repair Inc
Huge shout out to Randy and his technician Mike! I came up from San Diego to another diesel performance shop, to have some specialty work done (which they did well). However, a nagging (4 years), abs, brake and airbag lights and codes could not be removed or reprogramed in the computer (other shops have tried + a dealership). The other shop recommended Cimental's. Although booked, Randy squeezed me in. Mike worked hours and ultimately solved all the issues. Randy charged substantially below their hourly rate. Their professionalism and fairness was outstanding! If I have any major issues with my Dodge 2500, I would feel most comfortable to again drive the 3+ hours to have them work on my truck
Tips & Advices
Among the common scams pulled are needless repairs, where a garage charges you for work that isn't necessary. Another popular one is attracting customers through a cheap oil change or tire pressure check. Then, when you your car is being repaired, they give you a long list of other corrections they'd like to make, therefore boosting the total cost of your bill. The best way to combat these types of problems is getting a written estimate before work is done so you can see how much repairs are expected to cost. If the final bill is higher than the estimate projected, ask to specifically see the work. Make sure information is put in writing as well. If a problem remains, you can have proof that work was not done to your satisfaction.
For winter driving, features such as the defroster, heater and exhaust system are paramount. Look in your owner's manual for specific directions on how features should be checked and repaired. Many newer cars have a cabin air filter that can be replaced when needed, allowing warm air to continue to flow in. Also, check tires before winter driving, as they need to be at the proper pressure to perform well on snow and ice.
In the spring and summer, you want to be sure your air conditioner and cooling systems work correctly. Given the high temperatures, overheating is a common problem. Look over the system by ensuring there is enough coolant available. If it needs to be refilled, it is best to open the hood and add more to the car before it gets too warm out. Also, clean out fan ducts and other ventilation sources necessary for summertime driving.
Some fixes to your car can be done without paying a specialist. Issues like replacing oil and air filters are relatively simple, with instructions provided in the owner's manual on how to make these changes. The same goes for replacing broken windshield wipers or burnt-out headlights. Such issues should be repaired quickly to guarantee safety, but don't require a visit to a garage.
Yes. Not every type of auto repair work needs to be done by a certified mechanic. You can fix some of a vehicle's issues just by paying attention to how the automobile is running and having a basic understanding of auto repair. Look over the ways weather may impact your car and what preventative measures you can take to avoid having to take it into the shop.
