I have spent 6 years in Austin getting $65 haircuts at Maximum FX (formerly on the drag, now in SOCO). My hair stylist there never left me disappointed, but she left my wallet emtpy. One day, I decided to try Stacy, since she was a friend of a friend. I went in with my fingers crossed, hoping and praying the entire time that I was not going to regret this decision for the next 5 weeks. Bird's was pretty new at the time and I was absolutely certain that no one could even come close to my top dollar salon. I was so wrong. I have not been back to the other salon since. I won't go to anyone but Stacy and every time I leave her chair and walk out the door, I feel ready to take on the world. I always get complimented on my hair. Stacy is a genius, a real artist, and should get paid more for what she does.

Jennifer has been doing my cut and colors for about a year and a half after a recommendation from a friend. She does great work at a very competitive price. I really appreciate having a stylist that I can trust with my hair. She works quickly which is a big plus. I would recommend her to any of my friends.
3.Banana Moon Hair Saloon
2900 West Ave
I decided to try this place out on a whim- I kept trying to give myself home haircuts and they were uneven to say the least. I saw online that they close at 8pm, and it was already 6:45. When I called Jana was really nice and encouraged me to come in even though she had just finished with her last appointment of the day. I went in and was delighted to find a lovely little salon that she operates out of part of her home! I immediately knew I had made the right decision and Jana was so pleasant and cute! She did a great job and was fun to talk with. I normally HATE going to the salon but really can't wait to go back!

5.Michael Jones - Stylist
7942 Great Northern Blvd
Michael is truly one of the best hair stylists in the country. He stays up to date with trends, and has a gift for styling hair. He is a family man who is practical and a joy to be around. If you are looking for a new stylist, he is worth checking out. I have been going to him for several years. I moved from Dallas, and spent 3 very frustrating years looking for a hair stylist. The salons downtown were pretentious and pricey. Which I don't mind paying, but the cuts didn't match the price I was paying. He has a central location and he meets all my vanity needs!\r

I got my cut from Ryan, and it was fantastic. First time anyone's gotten my haircut the way I've wanted it. I've been to a lot of other expensive places, and this place beats them all with value, service, and execution.
7.Kervin's Barber Shop
3909 N Interstate 35
I am extremely picky with my barbers. It's difficult for me to stick with a barber and trust him. But Kervins has a very friendly environment, the barbers are fun to be around and Kervins is the place to be. To Gregorydgarcia, the boot shiner you're refering to goes by the nickname Hollywood, sweet guy, well he died a few months ago, but i'm sorry to hear about your boots.

The person below obviously has frosted tips and uses a pound of hair product a day. This is a man's barber shop!!! \r p.s. Did I mention they shave you with a warm lather and a straight razor! Nothing is more terrifyingly dangerous and relaxing at the same time.\r \r I wish they had 6 stars.

The last time I had a real straight razor around my ears and all down my neck was when I was in the Corps. That was eight years ago, and I've been looking for it ever since. I got to the Avenue Barber Shop at around three in the afternoon and had to wait a while for a Barber to cut my hair, but as I was waiting I got to see something very cool. All types of people from different age groups and backgrounds going to the same place to feel and look better. One young hipster guy had long hair and got it re-shaped, one older fella got a sweet flat top, one other guy got what was probably the ""Wall Street Special"", and another guy got a pompadour that would make Elvis bust out in a wiggle dance. My turn came around and a huge man with tattoos on his neck and greasy, tall hair and Buddy Holly glasses named Kevin called me up to his chair. He asked me what I wanted for a haircut and I told him that I wanted it short and cool, but not too hipster. He gave me the best haircut of my life and my wife loves it. I'm thirty years old and have been to SO many Barber shops and salons all over the world. I found this place six months ago and it's the best one I've ever been to. The staff here is incredible at what they do, the shop is KILLER and I will never go anyplace else. GO HERE!!!!

18.Roosters Men's Grooming Center
13343 N Highway 183 Ste 215
I stopped in at Roosters now renamed Matador's Men's Grooming Center last Sunday for a hair cut and was amazed at how classy the wood paneled shop was. Then I was met with an offer of free beer, wine or soft drink while I waited for my turn in the chair. The hair cut was to perfection and then I got the first barber shop hot shave of my life. That hot towel shave was so fine that I nearly didn't have to shave the next day and my face felt so clean. I have been telling all my buddies about the place as I was so pleased with the hair cut, shave and friendly personnel.

No, it's not what I usually look for or hope for in any given neighborhood; I have to admit, I'm kind of ""old school""; and tend to either wear my hair long or opt for the old fashioned 'barber shop' haircut - where you shoot the breeze with the old timers, pick up a 'men's magazine' and wait your turn. Those days are gone and although those ol' Barber Shops can still be found, they're few and far between - in the abscence of a good ol' fashioned Barber Shop though I have to say; this will do fine in the interim - it seems to be geared toward an Hispanic family clientele, but they always make me feel welcome.\r A pretty Spanish-speaking lady cut my hair today, and despite my poor Spanish she gave me exactly the cut I wanted. My hair had about six or seven months of growth, so it was ""long"" when I went in, I pointed to a picture on the wall of a haircut that was close enough to what I wanted. I'm probably not the most picky customer, but I must say I'm very happy with my hair cut today; I might not consider it the best I've ever been to; and when I'm able to drive somewhere else I might go to another place, but I am very glad it is here in the neighborhood for me, I would recommend this place to anyone and it's a place for the whole familia! They do cuts and fades too, something I have been thinking of trying - maybe next time.

Ok, two experiences here. First one was phenomenal. Next time I went, didn't get so lucky. I'll be back, but will always ask for the same person to ensure quality. Love the massage and neck shave. Good price as well. Nice, relaxing atmosphere.

I don't want to diss what is an honest effort by the owners. However, I found the quality of service (for the price) to be marginal at this new location of theirs. The cutting by the lady there was almost robot like - it was as if she was in a rush, and the quality of the job reflected her lack of attention. For example, the job around the ears was very uneven. I'm afraid to say that Supercuts is as good (or bad), but slightly cheaper.
24.Sport Clips Haircuts of Austin - Five Oaks
13000 N Interstate 35 Bldg 300
They have really good quality. My dad got a haircut and my baby sister and I were waiting and they have lollypops there for their costumers. My baby sister had grabbed 3 and this heavy set black women had got after her and put them behind the counter. First of all how rude she is a kid and then she goes and tells her coworker and her coworker just sat down and had got on her phone while sitting down again very lazy. There is guy there named Loise who was very nice, polite, and an awesome employe. Highly recommend you to ask for Loise. Please if you have children don't let them grab their candy.
25.Too Hotties Hair Cuts Pecan
12809 Ranch Road 620 N
My teenage son I went to the Too Hotties shop for haircuts. During the visit I was appalled at the poor customer service and rudeness that was demonstrated. Because my teenage son, who wears his hair long had ratted knots in his hair on the back, the cutter insulted him and forced him to take a comb and attempt to comb out the knots himself. She left and went to the storefront and sat at the desk for at least 5 minutes. After the young woman who had cut my hair had finished she went to my son and cut the knots from his hair, as I had suggested to the other cutter. The cutter who cut my son's hair repeatedly accused him of not brushing his hair (which he in fact does daily after he shampoos, but because his hair is very fine he tends to get ""bedhead."") His cutter demeaned him and told him his hair was ""thin"" and she told me that she has cut his hair twice before and that he will not allow her to do anything to it. I got the strong impression that his cutter just didn't care. My son came home and actually cried because of the Too Hotties experience. Although I have given Too Hotties my business in the past, I do not any longer feel that Too Hotties understands customer service or good business. If Too Hotties feels confident enough to demand tips, they need to begin to ensure that their customers are treated with respect. More than ever good business practices are needed to attain success. It pained me to see my son insulted by someone who just didn't care how she made a 16 year-old child feel about himself.
26.Gaston This Is It
5811 Berkman Dr
Find another hairdresser. After 3 appointments, I will not be going back. Today was my 3rd appointment and the hairdresser did not show up. On my 1st appointment, she was 20 minutes late, the 2nd appointment she was again, 20 minutes late and today, she just plain did not show up. I kept asking the owner/barber (her brother) to call her to find out what her eta was and when she would be arriving. He kept telling me that she was "on the way". I sat quietly in the chair at her hair station waiting and the longer I waited, the angrier I became. My appointment was at 11 AM and I wound up walking out at 12:25 PM. I have never been treated so shabbily at a business in my life. Gaston's doesn't have to worry about me coming back and I won't be referring anyone to that shop either. Too bad, I like supporting minority businesses, but, I will not be supporting this one.
