Mr. Done Right Handyman Contractor
August 22, 2012Recommendation for Don Fenton:Having lived in a 70+ year old house for over 50 years there have been serious repairs needed. Due to the age of the house we frequently found that the needed parts and/or fixtures were no longer available. Don loves challenges and has a profound understanding of how things work. He has never failed to come up with an answer and once it is “fixed” it stays “fixed.” During my 90 years, I have never met another person such as Don-with such honesty, and expertise. Here are a few examples:A large oak tree encroached upon and incorporated a portion of my garage. To make it worse, the electrical system had also been compromised and had to be redone.Without damaging the tree, he carefully moved the wall away from the tree and rebuilt it leaving the roof intact taking care of the problem and, at the same time providing me with more working space adjacent to the garage.Due to an improper instillation of an upstairs shower (by another contractor) over the years it leaked down to the next floor leaving damage on both floors. Several contractors were not willing to take the job. Don tackled it and in addition to the repairs made other improvements in the area at the same time. The gas company, while checking something else, summarily cut the connections to a wall heater (which had served safely since the house was built). They claimed that it violated the city code and was unsafe. We were without heat in that bathroom. There was no place for another heater and if there had been, it would have entailed tearing out some walls and flooring in order to get gas to it. Don solved the problem by installing a combination light/heating unit in the ceiling. As a person who can take care of both large and small problems, Don has no equal. He is honest, keeps his appointments, finishes on time and has excellent helpers.I recommend him without reservation.Robert N. Snider, M.D.

Cottonwood Custom Homes
Cottonwood Custom Homes built our unique 5000 sq ft home in the hill country outside Austin. From the earliest planning stages through the final touches on our project, he consistently went above and beyond anything we could have expected to ensure that our home was not only picture perfect, but was exactly and precisely what we wanted. From choosing the perfect build site on our 7 acres to suggesting a loft area to link the kids' rooms, Cottonwood contributed not only solid practical ability in building and managing our project, but also creative and aesthetic ideas that dramatically improved our house. They patiently worked through each of our exacting requirements, and insisted that every worker on the project get every detail perfect. They even went so far as to take over managing the pool construction (at no extra charge, though it was beyond the scope of his contract) when the poolbuilders proved incompetent, just to be sure we weren't left with an unfinished or substandard outcome. This amount of detail and care for their customers make Cottonwood Custom Homes a premier builder.

Renewal By Anderson
Sales: David was prompt and professional and conveniently made an appt. on the weekend. He also brought samples which he used to demonstrate the product. It was the demonstration that sold me.Follow-up: All visits were made at my convenience. Michael (the measurement technician) was helpful and quite informative about the process. He presented me with a written process which Renewal by Andersen followed to the letter (no surprises)Installation: The team was on time. They were professional and extremely polite. I was greeted by the team leader who introduced the entire team. When another job ended early and second team was sent to work on my job and this decreased the installation by one day. They left all of the areas as clean as they found them. Tom and his team did an outstanding job. The City of Austin permitting process went smoothly and the Renewal by Andersen staff provided me with all of the materials I needed.

J-Conn Roofing & Repair Service
We've used J-Conn twice. Once was for a repair and most recently for a full roof replacement. Erin worked most closely with me, but everyone was always so professional and helpful. We had issues with our insurance company approving the job and then reimbursing us for the full job once the job was done and J-Conn helped us resolved both issues. We wouldn't have been able to get this accomplished without them. They also showed up and got the job done in a timely fashion. When there were weather delays, they always kept me in the loop. I appreicate that open communication and I appreciate a contractor who does what they say!!!! We were referred to a different person at first and they just dragged their feet. Once I contacted J-Conn, they were out giving us an estimate within a few days...then our roof was repairs very quickly as well. AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME people and a role model for business!

Austin's Best Home Remodeling and Handyman Service
Rodrick was hired to paint a newly textured ceiling. He was on time for our quote, easy to communicate with, and on time for the install. His pricing was fair for the task. I am happy with the job that he performed on the ceiling. I could tell the he took the time to make sure it was done correctly the first time and he used quality materials. I would have been very easy to use cheap paint and put more money in his pocket, but he did not do that. I appreciate that! He is saved as a permanent contact for future handywork!

Al's Custom Decks
Everything sounded so promising. It's the restaurant that used to be notoriously known for being impossible to get a reservation at. Opened in 2012, it was named Best New Restaurant by the James Beard Foundation & Bon Appetit, amongst other publications. By 2014, it had already gained a Michelin star. Everyone was talking about this place. I've even traveled out of the country and have met people who said they were going to SF just to eat at State Bird Provisions. The hype was definitely real.

Tips & Advices
If there is ever a dispute regarding payment over the course of the project, a contractor or subcontractor could place a payment claim, or lien, on your property. To avoid this, ask the contractor to sign a lien release, which is a legal agreement that states that any payment accepted is final. This can come in handy if a contractor has his or her own payment issues with their subcontractors. Signing a lien release form certifies that any payment made by a client to the contractor is enough to pay for any goods or services rendered.
Absolutely ask. Paying too much up front offers the homeowner minimal leverage if the quality of work does not meet expectations or contractual specifications. Try to establish a reasonable pay schedule, such as paying 10 percent of the total cost for each 10 percent of the work that is completed. Include this payment plan in the contract, as well.
Before any money changes hands, there should be a contract to sign. Make sure the specifics of the work and all costs are listed in the contract, including details. If you forget to have something included in the contract after signing it, there's rarely a chance of recourse.
Ask the contractor for proof of their certification before signing anything, as well as their proof of insurance. You should also check your homeowners insurance policy to see if they offer coverage for contracted work. You may want to call your insurance provider and ask for more details on what your plan will and won't cover.
Yes. Plans for how the work site will be cleaned at the end of each day as well as at the conclusion of work need to be put in writing. An experienced general contractor should make every effort to keep the workspace clean and prevent dirtying or damaging any other area. Even so, talk with the contractor about the daily schedule, the logistics of transporting workers and equipment, and how cleanup will be handled.

Just a moment...
