Murphy's
Location: Right off of the street and in the same plaza as Yogli Mogli. Parking is a bit tight and they do not offer much parking space, so I recommend finding a spot on the side of the street and then walking. Atmosphere: My friend and I sat on the patio, which was nice and offered views onto the street. It also has a warm and rustic vibe. When you first walk into the restaurant I was greeted by a very friendly host who asked if we wanted to either sit inside or outside. He then led us to our table which was very clean and simple. The inside of the restaurant features a wall of wine options that you can choose from and also features desserts that I think you can pick up for togo. Murphy’s has a very casual laid back atmosphere that transports you to a Cali winery. Food/Beverages: We ordered the mimosas which were good because how can you really butcher a mimosa (juice & champagne)? I ordered the quinoa squash with the artichokes as an appetizer and a side of their mac and cheese. My lovely friend ordered their special, which was grilled scallops over angel hair pasta and tossed in a pesto sauce. The artichokes were very good because they were grilled and served with a delicious lemon aioli of some sort. I LOVE artichokes and boy, they did this artichoke justice. The quinoa squash was also delicious and perfectly seasoned. Many places usually offer bland vegetable entrees, but Murphy’s seasoned this entree to perfection. It was surprisingly good. The thing that stole my heart was actually the mac and cheese. I love mac and cheese and this was some good ole mac and cheese. I think they used some sort of white cheddar and truffle oil, which complemented the cheese very nicely. I also loved the fact that they used a thicker type of pasta in order to catch every drop of their delicious cheese sauce. If you do not thick that the shape of the pasta affects how a dish tastes, then you my friend need to try their mac and cheese. It was goooooood. My friend’s scallop pesto pasta was also very flavorful, light and filling. The pesto sauce was divine and she raved about the perfection that the scallops were cooked to.Service: Our server was very attentive to us and made sure that we had everything we needed. Overall: Murphy’s is a great place for a unique spin on traditional american food. Everything was seasoned to my liking and I will definitely be back to try some of their other offerings. Parking is a bit of a pain, but a bit of walking is not all that bad. I am surprised that I haven’t heard about this gem in Virginia Highland’s until now.

Fogo de Chao
I went here with my hubby for our first date night post baby! I was already super excited because of all the wonderful reviews I had read, and I was not disappointed. So, first we were greeted by the complimentary valet when we pulled up, which is always a wonderful thing, especially here in Atlanta where parking can be a nightmare. Next, we walked in and spoke to the hostess, who seemed a little overwhelmed with the large crowd, but was still nice and quick to greet us and get our name. We had reservations for 7:30, but did have a 10 minute wait because they were a little behind. However, this was not too terrible since we were able to order a drink at the bar in the mean time. It was a Saturday night, so it was very crowded, but our drinks were ready very quickly, and the bartender was personable and helped me choose a drink that I would enjoy (I am not a big drinker), and it was delicious! Sadly, I do not recall the name of it. Once we were seated, we got our waters and cheese bread, and the waiter explained to us how things work with the red and green coaster.. turn it over to green for servers to come offer you meat, and turn it over to red to stop the servers from offering. Next, they brought out the side items while we went and loaded our plates at the extensive salad bar.. I had never seen anything like it! I tried most everything they had out and all of it was tasty. Next, we turned our cards to green and immediately were offered many types of meat. Every single thing I had was amazing, except for the lamb. I am partial here though, since I had never had lamb and was very hesitant to try it at all. My favorite meat was the filet mignon, but everything was cooked perfectly. You are able to choose which part of the meat you want by how it is cooked (medium rare, medium, etc). So, after many rounds of meat and tasting all the sides (which were good but nothing spectacular compared to the meat), we ordered dessert. We chose the papaya cream with the blueberry liqueur on top, and it was wonderful! Overall, I would give this place 6 out of 5 stars if I could! Totally worth the small fortune we spent! :-)

Nexto
Location: Right near two urban licks. They offer complimentary valet parking because the parking can get very tight. Atmosphere: Cool, hip, and peaceful. They have a big wooden tree and fountain in the center of their restaurant, which is very serene and modern. The decor is very simple and allows you to focus on their food and bar. Food/Beverages: They offer a wide array of beers, cocktails and food as well. Their dishes range from traditional japanese items such as Okonomiyaki (japanese pancake) to other yummy dishes such as their georgia white shrimp. We ordered the curry ramen, spicy bacon ramen, Okonomiyaki, georgia white shrimp and gommae. Their ramen is extremely flavorful and not the typical ramen that you imagine. It is also very filling and their soups are very rich as well. Their Okonomiyaki was very, very good also. Their version had bacon and lobster and was cooked to perfection. The georgia shrimp appetizer featured locally grilled shrimp served over spicy mayo, which was delicious also. The gommae was a bit different than others because it tasted like chrysanthemum, which was pretty cool and different. My favorites were the Okonomiyaki and the curry ramen. Service: Our server was very sweet and attentive. She made us feel very comfortable and helped us answer any questions that we had. Overall: Cool, fun and delicious place to grab ramen when you are on the Beltline. I also love that they offer so many other choices and a late night menu as well. After 10pm, they offer a ramen burger. Usually they do not close until 2am on the weekends, which is a great option for people who want to grab a drink or late night bowl of delicious ramen. They do not serve your traditional ramen, but ramen with a good twist. It is nice to have something different from time to time and Nexto is doing a fantastic job at this.

Two Urban Licks
This place was the ultimate experience for out of state visitors. My friends and I are all about the true dining experience. We love chic eateries with amazing decor that put such a big smile on your face when you walk in. I love to feel like I'm in a movie when I am out dining and this place did just that. When you pull up to the establishment you are a little confused because it looks like you just pulled up to a garage shipping dock. Parking wasn't anywhere insight so we paid for valet. Shortly there after we walked into an amazing restaurant that is mouth dropping. It has a very urban New York sophisticated upscale hipster appeal. The bar tender was very well versed in her knowledge of cocktails so we took her suggestions for drinks. The restaurant is very large in size. We decided to sit outside on their amazing patio surrounded by trendy lofts and a beautiful landscape of rich greenery. Their outside dining was absolutely one of the best experiences I have had. The weather was even great in November of 2014. The drinks are a bit pricey as it is upscale dining, but I experience is well worth. We only stayed for drinks as we were just looking for place to kick back and have a few cocktails. I totally recommend this place as a date night restaurant or a girls in the city night out with your with your closest friends. I will definitely visit this place the next time that I am in Atlanta. The service was a plus. This place is definitely an attraction for Atlanta visitors.

Boogalou Restaurant & Lounge
Where do I start? If you are celebrating an event this is not your spot. I made reservations for 6 and received an email saying my reservations were received. I arrive at the restaurant only to wait 15 minutes for the Hostess who was having a intense conversation with another group who were unhappy and then left. I was told there was no record of my reservation and that I was supposed to receive a text confirmation. How was I supposed to know that? After some discussion, the Hostess seated us and told us we would have to give up our table in one hour and 45 minutes to stand because there was no other available seating. Our waitress came with menus and took one drink order only to come back 20 minutes later w/o the one drink. After one person in my party let the waitress know how she felt the waitress bought us a round of drinks. All through the night we saw the Hostess having unpleasant conversations with other groups who appeared dissatisfied. On the up side the food and the DJ were good. WHO MANAGES THIS SPOT?

The Optimist
It took us several weeks to book dinner at The Optimist and we were really looking forward to it. We were impressed when arriving. We had requested the Chef's table, but there wasn't one, so we were seated where we had a view of the kitchen. We love to watch the chefs so this was perfect to meet our request. The appetizers were good, the cocktails were average. Although we had a pleasant waitress, she did forget one of our crudo items that came after the entree. Our entrees were both fish; one swordfish that was cooked perfectly, and Cobia, which was not. The Cobia was raw in the center and very disappointing coming from a Ford Fry restaurant. My expectations were set high for this restaurant and although they did many things "right", they also had some mistakes and there was nothing to set the dining bar as I had expected. We do not mind paying higher prices for a great "experience", but this was really a let down as to what we've come to expect from a Ford Fry restaurant.

Front Row Seafood Sports Bar
Went in for lunch Friday at 1:30, only one table had people sitting, a table of 7. I stood there at the foyer entrance for a few minutes then (sat myself). Waitress came brought me a water and took my order, last I saw of her. I filled my own water again at the bar and after 45 minutes someone from the kitchen brings out my order, it had the wrong side, I didn’t say anything since I had to get back to work. Again filled my own water at the bar, and found my original waitress at the back cleaning tables. I asked her for the check, she said Ok. Another 10 minutes go by, she’s still cleaning. I went to the bar left $13 (my best estimate) with the bartender and left. Huge waste of time. The food was good, the place was clean. Owner, your location is great, your menu looks good, you spent a ton of money on furniture and TV's but service like this will drive us luncher's away. Some of us eat lunch at a place before we bring our friends and family.

Empire State South
The design and location are more interesting than the menu. Frankly, the brunch menu is too snooty for me, and it includes minor Southern delicacies. I started with the pimento cheese; it's savory, and the topped bacon is well incorporated, but it's slightly too smokey. My meal was the griddled biscuit in which was disappointing. The sausage in the biscuit was very spam-like. It had the same look and consistency as cooked spam. The bacon was a hard, thick slice of what tasted like cooking oil. The biscuit was somewhat dry but had a good texture. The good in this conjunction was the fig and cheese had a lot of flavors! The potatoes were well done as well which I prefer. I did not enjoy my cocktail; there was too much grapefruit in my Venetian Spritzer, so it was very sour and unpleasant. The silver lining is the staff is helpful, and the outdoor patio is beautiful! I'd return if a regular menu item is added. I hope waffles is in the near future.

Seven Lamps
This place was pretty good. Where they seated us, however, was not what we were expecting. Although they had at least 6 other empty two person tables that did not say reserved, they sat us at the back or the restaurant where all the servers had to squeeze by our feet to take the food back to the bus station. We were by a tarp that covered their firewood. Our backs were almost touching the window display of another shop behind us. Their cocktails were delicious and the complimentary picked and Creme fraise was a nice touch. The charcuterie was adequate, although not the best I've ever had. The portion was large, however. The dessert was awful. As in, we each took a bite and put our forks down. The waitress didn't seem to notice... the apple tarts was burnt to a crisp on the bottom and the ice cream flavor was olive oil... what? They didn't mention that on the menu. I'd go back, but I'd ask to sit somewhere else and not order the dessert again.

The Oceanaire Seafood Room
Came here for a midweek dinner with some colleagues, and it did not disappoint!I had the shrimp cocktail appetizer. The shrimp were plump and fresh, and the cocktail sauce was flavorful. For my entree, I had broiled Bali Barramundi. Never heard of this before, but I was feeling adventurous. I topped it was the jumbo lump crab oscar. Once again, the seafood was fresh. The staff was extremely attentive. When I got up to freshen up in the powder room, they came and cleaned the very few crumbs that were on the table and re-folded my napkin for me. Dessert was the Crème Brûlée, and I enjoyed it as well. The server suggested the Dr. Loosen Blue Plate Riesling, and it was divine. And to top things off--We asked the hostess to call a cab for us, and she got us black car service instead. Granted, it was a few more dollars more. But it was like the perfect end to a great evening. All in all, I had a wonderful experience and will certainly be back.

Just a moment...
