  • Beware!

I had a very disappointing experience at Big O on Friday. I have a '72 Super Beetle, which is very hard to find tires for. To make a long story short, I found a good price on eBay and took my car and tires in. It was a little busy, but that was to be expected. They said that the car would be ready in a few hours, so my husband and I went home to wait.

After leaving the shop, we realized that the car needed an alignment too. So my husband called and they said that they would need to keep the car overnight. Again we said fine and figured that we would pick the car up after work. So I get a message from Big O around 10:30 am saying ""we cannot align you car. The bearings are bad and the tires are wobbling"". This has happened before. A few years ago a technician told me the same thing and my mechanic inspected it and told me everything was fine. I figured the same this time.

So my husband and I went to pick up the car and the first thing I noticed was the talc had not been washed of after they installed the tire. My husband and I went into pay and they tried to get us to have them replace the bearings and we said no. I drove the car home because I wanted to see how the new tires felt. Everything was fine until I heard a strange noise coming from outside the car. I thought it was just road noise and continued to drive. Then I heard it again. I put the car in neutral and sure enough there it was. A loud metal on metal scrapping. I didn't have time to take the car back then, but my husband was able to take it back on Monday.

He made sure to ride with the technician to let him hear the sound. He told my husband that it sounded like a clutch bearing and pointed to the front of the car. My husband said ""the clutch is in the back"". And then the mechanic replied ""oh, so this is a rear wheel drive car?"" Okay, how many Beetles are on the road? How did this guy NOT know this? Then my husband asked why the noise appeared after we picked it up? The mechanic made excuses and said that things can come loose easily. My husband is an aviation mechanic, I know that he would miss tightening anything. When my husband inspected the car today, he discovered that the spare tire was put carelessly on top of everything in my bonnet.

So I can't prove it, but I know in my heart of hearts that they messed with my car. Maybe because my husband and I are young that they thought that they could get away with it. And then not washing the talc of my tires. That is simply unprofessional. Just because my car is not pristine DOES NOT mean it should be disrespected! I am so disappointed.

  • Where I go for all my auto needs

I LOVE BIG O tires on Park Street in Alameda! I have been going there for the past six years or so. Gary and Brian are the best. And whenever I need auto service that they do not provide I call them to get referrals. In six years I have never been steered wrong by them. They really go the extra mile on service and the work is always quality and completed in a timely manner. Thanks Gary and Brian, your Big O shop ROCKS!

  • Oh the BIG O!

Where to start?! I've been going to these guys for the past four or five years. Being a woman, it can sometimes be intimidating walking into a car shop to get help on something you aren't too sure about. Gary, Rogerio, and the guys are straight forward, helpful, and honest with you. AND...they explain what the problem is in simple English! Highly recommend checking them out!

  • Old Fashioned Service

If you need tire related service and goods, ignore everyone else and go here. Gary the manager and the staff there are hard working, knowledgeable, extremely pleasent, and incredibly efficient. I had a bad valve in my tire and got there early on a Monday morning. The place was buzzing and Gary was multi tasking like crazy. In a minute or two, he had be back in, checked the valve, replaced it's core, had all my tires filled with air by a staffer and another even noticed my hubcap was skewed and pried it off and hammered it back on - all in less than 5 minutes total. NO CHARGE and lots of smiles. And I didn't even buy the tires there! But if I need new ones I know I'll go there. You should too.

  • Helpful & courteous

Big O is the place to go for your tire needs. They
were courteous on the phone and in person and they were knowledgable about their products. I would shop again with them in the future.
