Frequently, particularly after childbirth or weight loss, patients present with a weakness of the abdominal wall muscles and fascia; in such cases, the defect between the anterior muscles is repaired before trimming the excess skin and fat.

Mammography
There is no evidence that breast surgery alters the possibility of developing breast cancer. Mammography techniques have improved in recent years. In spite of these advances, there is a theoretical risk of compromised detection of early breast cancer following an augmentation mammoplasty. If a cancer were to develop, its detection by mammography could be made more difficult, depending on the location of the cancer within the breast, the position and size of the implant and the type of implant employed. Regardless of your decision to have an augmentation mammoplasty or not, it will still be necessary for you to examine yourself monthly for breast lumps and undergo mammography as suggested by your personal physician.
Chemotherapy
Modern surgical technology makes it possible to construct a natural-looking breasts after mastectomy (breast removal) for cancer or other diseases. The procedure is commonly begun and sometimes completed immediately following mastectomy, so that the patient wakes with a new breast mound. Alternatively, reconstruction may begin years after mastectomy. There are several ways to reconstruct the breast, both with and without implants; your surgeon(s) should work together with you in deciding which is the best for you. Breast reconstruction has not been proven to affect the recurrence of cancer or other diseases, chemotherapy or radiation treatment.

General Surgery
Originally from Southern California, he attended college at the University of California at Riverside, graduating with a major in biochemistry. Pursuing his lifelong dream of becoming a physician, Dr. Gerlach moved to Chicago to continue his career at the Chicago Medical School, followed by general surgery residency at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Wound Care

Following his extensive training in Cleveland, he completed a fellowship in microsurgery under the direction of H. Buncke in San Francisco as well as an additional hand surgery fellowship at U.C. All women, whether or not they are contemplating breast surgery, are encouraged to obtain a baseline mammogram at age 35 (or even sooner if you have a family history of breast cancer) and a yearly mammogram after the age of 40.
Body Contouring
It is important that you understand that no person is perfectly symmetrical from one side to the other. If body contouring surgery is indicated, every attempt will be made during surgery to minimize your side to side dissimilarities, but such differences always persist to some degree, even after the most successful operation.
Laser Resurfacing
This operation is designed to remove excess skin and bagginess to give the eyes a more youthful appearance. It must be understood that most of the wrinkles around the eyes are etched into the skin and cannot be removed by this procedure. A laser resurfacing procedure may be desired if the patient would like to decrease wrinkles.
Gynecomastia
Several procedures are now available to reduce the size of enlarged male breasts, a condition known as gynecomastia. This condition often occurs in the early teenage years and may persist into adulthood. Dr.Gerlach uses tumescent liposuction and ultrasonic liposuction (UAL) to remove the excess breast tissue. The ultrasonic liposuction is especially effective for removing the fibrous male breast tissue. In addition some patients may need a small incision around the inside of the nipple to remove the dense glandular breast tissue under the nipple that can not be removed with liposuction. This is usually performed in the office surgical suite. The patient is returned home the day of surgery and depending on the extent of the surgery is able to return to usual activities in one to two weeks, and routine exercise in four weeks. A compression garment is worn after the surgery for four weeks to enhance the appearance of a firmer, flatter chest.

Chin Augmentation
A surgeon must consider the patient's entire facial profile when planning nasal surgery. Patients with moderate sized noses, but very weak chins will appear to have much larger noses than they actually have. In such cases, it is impossible to reduce the nose sufficiently to provide a satisfactory profile, but facial balance may be restored by simultaneously performing a chin augmentation. Additional ancillary procedures such as a liposuction of the neck or a face lift may enhance the result of the rhinoplasty even further by restoring facial balance.
