Insects and Spiders

Ants
This species of ants is highly aggressive and will attack the smallest potential threat. They do sting, and it can be a painful, itchy inconvenience.
Spiders
The name of the Wolf Spider originates from the initial belief that these spiders hunted in a pack together. They also go by ground spiders or hunting spiders, as they do not use a web; they literally hunt down their prey. These arachnids move quickly and can reach two feet per second, which reduces the likelihood that youâ€™ll even get near one. If you do have a close encounter; wolf spiders are not known for being aggressive, but they can and will bite when feeling threatened. If bitten, apply ice to reduce swelling, avoid movement if possible, and immediately seek medical attention. Spider bites can get worse over time, and the sooner a doctor sees you the better the outcome.
Termites
Termites Â are highly social insects that live in large colonies where populations can reach more than one million. A colony consists of several structurally differentiated forms living together as castes (including reproductives, soldiers, and workers) with different functions in community life.

Fleas
Our pets at home are part of the family, and most of us enjoy sitting with them on the couch or in bed. If there is a threat of fleas in or around your home, this can be a nightmare if they latch on to your furry friend! These insects, which commonly appear in warmer months, feed on the blood of any warm-blooded body. Typically biting humans, fleas can leave an itchy, unsightly trail of bumps on your skin as well as producing severe allergic reactions.
Cockroaches
A cousin of the American cockroach, the smoky brown cockroach resembles it in size, shape and their deep mahogany coloring. The adults measure at 1 Â¼ inch and both sexes have a full set of wings that extend past the abdomen. In warm weather, they are able to fly short distances fairly easily. During evening hours, they are likely to gravitate toward light.
Silverfish
They are little, gray insects that feed off of carbohydrates like starches and sugars. We tend to find them in dark, damp places such as near water sources in the bathroom, but silverfish are also attracted to paper, wallpaper paste and glues. This is why sometimes when opening a book, a silverfish might scurry out. Other places they might squeeze into include under drawer protective sheets, between the wall and wallpaper, or inside a framed print.
Bees
Paper wasps can be easily aggravated and attack if you even walk toward their nest in a close proximity; therefore staying away from nests is your best bet. Unlike bees, the paper wasp can easily remove its stinger from your body for multiple attacks. Over 500,000 people are sent to the emergency room each year from stinging insects.
Wasps
These umbrella-like nests are created in protected spaces and most likely places too high to reach unless on a ladder. Also, paper wasps live in small colonies of 100 or less; another difference between the species.
Ticks
My experience in the San Antonio extermination industry started back in 1989 while working at a veterinarian clinic. We dealt with flea and tick issues and the effects of what ticks can cause in not only pets, but humans, too. After my experience at the clinic, I started working with a National Pest Control Company in San Antonio.
Crickets
Crickets seem to be everywhere when summer turns to autumn, and are more of a nuisance than a threat. These creatures are not capable of biting you, but that doesnâ€™t prevent the shrieks if one happens to jump in your direction. The chirping at night can be bothersome as well, especially if one or many have crept into your home. The chirping is performed as a song by male crickets to attract the female crickets for mating purposes, and it is said that the frequency of chirps relates to temperature; the number of chirps in 15 seconds plus 37 will give you the approximate temperature (Fahrenheit).
Earwigs
Earwigs live in moist environments and can be found by the hundreds in damp soils such as marshlands and swamplands. We can also catch them in gardens and lawns if damp enough. Since earwigs thrive in wet areas, you are likely to spot one of these insects after a heavy rain because of the wetness of the soil and the surplus of food. Earwigs eat insects (dead or alive) and vegetation â€”food sources that are plentiful in tree holes and gardens.

Flies
The good news is they wonâ€™t be disturbing your picnic! The paper wasp, unlike the yellow jacket which enjoys sweets and proteins, preys on live insects such as flies, caterpillars, as well as beetle larvae which is fed to their young. This diet can be beneficial to gardeners, as they keep pests from eating plants. However, the females have the ability to sting; a reason to keep paper wasps away.

About 8000 species of Centipedes can be found on earth, and in all different environments. These creepy crawlers, named for their abundance of legs, have a poisonous bite.

Scorpions
Only 20-25 species of scorpions are considered dangerous out of the 1,500 species on earth. While this specific scorpion wonâ€™t kill you upon contact, it is venomous and will cause a moderate reaction that might include redness, swelling, pain, and discomfort. An ice pack may relieve some of these symptoms. Allergic reactions are also a possibility, and if severe pain or difficulty breathing occurs, seek immediate medical attention.
Yellow Jackets
Paper Wasps Â seem nearly identical to yellow jackets, but they are a species all their own. Paper wasps get their name from their ability to make nests out of paper material from wood fibers. Mites

Slugs

Pill bugs are not insects! They are actually part of the crustacean family, closer in relation to crayfish and shrimp than any insect.
Palmetto Bugs
There have been sewer scenes in numerous movies that include a massive cockroach infestation, and many wonder if thatâ€™s an accurate depiction of what goes on underneath our cities. It is! This occurs across the country, but is more likely in the northern states, as this species prefers a humid environment with temperatures between 70-80 degrees. In the southern states, these bugs are usually above ground and around water sources. The American cockroach has been nicknamed the palmetto bug, water bug, and flying water bug.

Animal Control

Raccoons
Raccoons can carry rabies, which is concentrated in the saliva of the infected carrier. If the carrier makes contact with a human, the disease can be spread through a scratch or cut. The virus can also enter a human through orifices such as the eyes, mouth and nose. Within the past 40 years, a new strain of rabies in raccoons has been infiltrating the eastern United States and is quickly making its way toward the west coast, making rabies a re-emerging national issue.
Snakes
Most people canâ€™t identify a harmless snake from a venomous snake if they encounter one, and it can be risky getting closer to one in an attempt to make the distinction. Either way, keeping one in or around your home is a big risk to you and your family. Some snakes are so thin that they can easily sneak into your home in hopes of a colder climate in the summer or because they have the ability to smell a rat in your attic and itâ€™s lunch time. If bitten by a venomous snake, this can cause severe bodily damage and there is a risk of death; seek medical attention immediately.
Wildlife
Opossums
While opossums are generally non-violent, if you attempt to grab a wild opossum, it could bite or scratch you. Usually, if an opossum feels threatened, it will hiss, growl or do what they are known for; play dead. Also, they have an unusually high resistance to rabies, so that is not much of a worry. If you happen to spot an aggressive opossum, this is uncommon trait which raises suspicion and you should treat it as though it is a potential carrier. Feces of rats and mice can cause Salmonellosis (causing abdominal cramps and severe diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration) in patients with low immune systems, (hospitalization or death may occur) and Leptospirosis (initial signs are similar to that of the flu and may include a rash). Without treatment, Leptospirosis can lead to kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure, respiratory distress, and even death.
