In April 2012, Laura Chaney, an agent with ERA Manning. contacted me to place flyers in the May issue of my publication. I designed the flyer, had it printed, and inserted it in 3,000 copies of my publication. I mailed an invoice for the agreed amount of $275 in early May. When the invoice became 90 days past due, I told Ms. Chaney that she had a week to pay it or I would take the matter to small claims court. She said to go ahead. She would just ignore it.



I then went directly to ERA Manning and received this message from a Jim Manning on August 14: "Laura is an independent contractor, not an employee of Manning & Associates. We did not authorize you to do any work on behalf of our company. However, I do understand the need for you to be paid. I have talked to Laura and told her she needs to pay you the balance of your invoice. Please let me know once you have received payment. If you have not been paid by Friday, please let me know." Ms. Chaney emailed on the same day and said she would pay $175 provided that I mark her account as paid in full. I replied that I would meet her halfway at $225.00. I did not receive payment by that Friday. I let Mr. Manning know, but never heard back from him.



I received a check for $175.00 from Ms. Chaney on August 22. She wrote "paid in full" on the check. Can you think of any other transaction in which you can pay less than two-thirds of what you owe and consider the bill paid in full? Incredible.



I decided that it was not worth it to contact Ms. Chaney for the remainder of what she owed. However, I did want to share my experience with Laura Chaney and her company so others know how they do business. I will never do business with them again.
