Glaucoma is a progressive optic nerve disease normally associated with elevated pressure inside the eye. The resulting damage to the optic nerve makes glaucoma one of the leading causes of blindness in America.
Ophthalmology
Dr. Sunil Raichand is a board-certified comprehensive general ophthalmologist, as well as a cornea specialist. He completed his undergraduate training at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He was then accepted to the Tufts University School of Medicine, where he graduated in the top 10% of his class. He completed his internship at the University of Chicago and residency training in ophthalmology at Northwestern University. Dr. Raichand then completed a corneal external disease fellowship at the prestigious University of Washington Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration, also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), due to its prevalence in people over 50 years of age, is an eye disease that impairs straight-ahead, fine detail vision. The macula is located at the back of the eye near the center of the retina. When it deteriorates, patients may have difficulty with activities that require the central vision, such as: reading, sewing, driving, and recognizing faces.

Cataracts
A cataract is the clouding of an eyeâ€™s lens. Cataracts form when the two dominant elements that make up our eyeâ€™s lens, water and protein, â€œclumpâ€ together and block/blur vision.
Cataract Surgery
Prior to cataract surgery patients will choose an intraocular lens that will be implanted during their procedure. All lens options will be thoroughly discussed which includes: the monofocal, ReSTOR, and Toric lens. Given the patientsâ€™ history and lifestyle, a lens recommendation will be given based upon the patientsâ€™ individual needs.
Eye Exam
Regularly scheduled comprehensive eye exams are essential to detect the need for vision correction, but more importantly, to maintain healthy eyes and prevent disease related vision loss. Some common eye conditions that can lead to blindness may not have signs or symptoms. A comprehensive eye exam is the only way to treat and diagnose these conditions.

It may be recommended to remove a cataract at its earliest stages. This occurs when a patient has another eye condition (i.e.: macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy) and the cataract interferes with our ability to examine and properly diagnose a patient.

Ultrasound
In traditional cataract surgery, once the surgeon creates the small incision in your cornea, they will use a probe to create sound waves, known as ultrasound, to break up the cloudy lens. Your surgeon then suctions out the broken pieces of the lens and replaces them with the new intraocular lens. During this procedure, the incision is closed with a liquid seal, and stitches are usually not needed.

Plastic Surgeons

Eyelid Surgery
This laser is filled with carbon dioxide gas and uses a short-pulsed light energy, or continuous light beams, to remove the top layer of the skin, with minimal heat damage. The CO2 laser is used often, and is very detailed when vaporizing the skin tissue. This procedure is usually done in conjunction with eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty. After the procedure it is important to keep area clean, apply ice for eight hours and on and off for two days, and ointment twice a day for one week. Follow-up with your surgeon one week after the procedure.
Blepharoplasty
A variety of plastic procedures are performed at our facility such as; blepharoplasty, ptosis repairs, lateral tarsal strips, punctoplasty, and cosmetic skin resurfacing. These procedures may be necessary due to certain medical conditions, injury or trauma, birth defects, or the aging process. Fortunately, these outpatient procedures are available to reduce and even eliminate these conditions. These minimally invasive procedures can be performed in our outpatient surgical suite.
