Primary Care
As a note to our OBGYN, primary care, doctors, NP-C, or PA’s who might be reading this; you can fit the patient with compression hose at your office and start the conservative treatment plan, thus expediting the insurance approval for the patient. Conservative treatment will help reduce edema, blood pooling, venous stasis, vessel thrombosis, leg fatigue, and may help with pain reduction. Stockings are not a cure for venous disease!
Family Practice
Dr.Stewart began his medical career in rural west Texas (Lockney, Texas) doing a wide breadth of family practice which included operative obstetrics, emergency medicine, hospital/ clinic medicine and endoscopy as well as seeing patients with a wide spectrum of medical problems. After practicing in Lockney, Texas for almost 20 years, Dr. Stewart transitioned to treatment of venous disorders, of which he now has had 11 years of experience. Prior to joining the Center for Venous Disease in El Paso, Dr. Stewart was a vein doctor with Vein Clinics of America in Dallas, Texas. He is happily married and has two adult daughters. Dr. Stewart is an avid cyclist and enjoys camping, traveling and hiking. He speaks Spanish fluently and has interests in international history, 19th century American history and economics.
Emergency Care
The Doctors at the Center for Venous Disease are first and foremost concerned with your health and well-being. This is why, during your first ultrasound, your Doctor and Sonographer will look for and rule out a blood clot in your deep venous system and superficial venous system. If a Deep Vein Thrombosis is found during the ultrasound you will immediately be sent to the Emergency Room because a DVT can be a very serious thing. But don’t panic or make yourself sick with worry, the chance of having a blood clot is very rare. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be proactive though. Make it a point to get a yearly screening.

Ultrasound is a key component to successful treatment in any minimally invasive procedure related to Chronic Venous Disease. It is used before the treatment, during the treatment and post-procedure to document success and rule out any complications. You will have several ultrasound exams as part of the standard of care and follow-up needed to track your results and the success of any treatment you may receive. Having a trained and credentialed sonographer, in addition to a doctor who understands the findings can really make the difference for a successful treatment and outcome for the patient. It is also important that the doctor you are seeing has invested in a high quality ultrasound system. General Surgery
Dr. Bruno is a Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon who has been treating heart and lung disease and arterial and venous vascular problems in El Paso since 1978. He graduated cum laude from the Medical School of the University of Torino, Italy and holds Diplomas of Specialist in both General Surgery and Cardiovascular Surgery from the Surgical Clinic of the University of Torino. After completing a Fellowship in Cardiovascular Surgery at the Texas Heart Institute, Dr. Bruno was invited by Dr. Denton A. Cooley, to join The Texas Heart Institute medical staff in Houston, Texas. Dr. Bruno practiced clinical surgery and participated in artificial heart research and cardiac transplantation. Following his Texas Heart Institute experience, he moved to El Paso as co-director of the El Paso Southwestern Cardiovascular Associates practice. Dr. Bruno is a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Venous & Lymphatic Medicine. His membership affiliations include the American Medical Association and the D.A. Cooley Cardiovascular Surgical Society. During his years of practice in El Paso, Dr. Bruno has been actively involved with Medical Staff affairs, holding many positions, from Chief of Staff to Cardiovascular Department Chairman, Member of the Board of Directors with Sierra Medical Center, Sierra Providence Health Network and is a Past President of the El Paso American Heart Association. Dr. Bruno has also been a physician for the United States Ski Team and has traveled extensively with the World Cup Downhill team.
Wound Care
The Center for Venous Disease was founded in 2006 by James Heinz, MAHA, Dr. Thomas Pester, and Dr. Joseph Smith to evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with varicose veins, blood clots, wound care issues, and leg pain.
Vascular Surgery
The VNUS Closure Fast ™ procedure is an evolution of the original Closure Catheter, ClosurePlus catheter, and now ClosureFast catheter. In 2002 VNUS Medical Technologies (San Jose, CA) pioneered minimally invasive techniques to replace Vein Stripping Surgery through the use of a catheter and computer system that provides feedback to the doctor on treatment parameters. Endovenous Laser does not offer feedback to the doctor from the tip of the fiber to the laser unit. This is a huge disadvantage with this technology along with numerous pain and bruising issues raised by multiple clinical studies. On the backs of radio-frequency technology, Endovenous laser emerged. No other company or its technology have been studied, followed, or had more procedure case experience than the VNUS RFA product line. Covidien (COV) purchased VNUS Medical Technologies to compliment its already extensive vascular surgery medical device offering to patients around the world. The ClosureFast catheter uses a heating element inside the vein to shrink the collagen lining of the vein thus starting a constriction of the vein, a fibrotic seal, and eventual disappearance of the diseased vein. All of this is done with the support of a computer system that “talks” to the catheter tip over 1000 times per second. With this technology, we have nearly a 99% occlusion rate with CVD doctors.
