Vitiligo affects both genders and all races, but it is more noticeable in people with darker skin. The close “blood relatives” of a patient with vitiligo are also at an elevated risk of developing vitiligo. Patients with vitiligo also have an increased risk of other autoimmune disorders, such as thyroid disease, Type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and others.

Patients usually return in one to two weeks to have their stitches removed and to ensure that the wound is healing well. You may need to return for additional visits to ensure that the scar has healed with the best possible result. It is important for you to return to your referring dermatologist or primary care provider for regular skin checkups to look for any new skin cancers.

Beginning about 30 to 45 minutes before treatment, you will be instructed to use a topical anesthetic ointment on the treatment area. Just prior to the procedure, your skin will be cleansed, protective eyewear will be applied and cold ultrasound gel will be smoothed on the skin surface. Most patients describe a warm, light “rubber-band snap” sensation as the energy enters their skin. To minimize discomfort, cold air will be used on the treatment area during the procedure. The procedure takes anywhere from 5 to 60 minutes depending on the areas treated.

The Mohs surgery clinical staff explains and demonstrates the techniques for wound care immediately after Mohs surgery. You will receive written instructions and information for contacting the Mohs surgeon directly, in the rare case of an emergency.

Once the tumor is cleared, fellowship-trained Mohs surgeons have extensive training in reconstructive surgery and are generally able to perform the reconstructive surgery immediately after microscopic analysis confirms that the cancer is completely removed.

Numbing: For injectables (not including Botox or Dysport) and for laser/light treatments, begin to apply the numbing cream that was given to you at the cosmetic consultation as directed. If you do not have the numbing cream at home, please come 30 minutes early for your appointment and tell the receptionist that you need to apply numbing cream. Numbing cream is not needed for Botox or Dysport injections, or for treatment of broken capillaries and leg veins with Vbeam laser or sclerotherapy.

Ulcer
SCC is the second most common type of skin cancer. This skin cancer often looks like a firm bump, scaly patch, or an ulcer that heals and then re-opens. SCC is usually reddish in color. It tends to form on skin that gets frequent sun exposure, such as the rim of the ear, face, neck, arms and trunk. People who have light skin are most likely to develop SCC, but it can also develop in dark-skinned people, especially those who have scarring. Because SCC can grow deep, it can cause damage and disfigurement. Early treatment can prevent this and stop SCC from spreading.
Eczema
Eczema is a term for dermatitis, or inflammation of the skin. It can have many causes, can be acute or chronic, and tends to produce dryness, scaling, and itching of the skin.
Fungus
Ringworm is not a worm — it is a fungus of the skin. There are a number of different fungi that infect the skin and can cause different kinds of rashes and issues. Most common fungi respond well to traditional antifungal medications.
Lesions
Inflammation determines what type of acne appears. A little inflammation means that sebum flow is blocked close to the skin’s surface. The result is a blackhead or whitehead. Your dermatologist may call this a “comedo.” If the blockage develops deeper within the skin, a papule (pimple) forms. A bit deeper and a pustule (pus-filled pimple) develops. A very deep blockage causes intense inflammation, resulting in a painful nodule or cyst. Nodules and cysts are the most severe types of acne lesions.

Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a persistent skin disorder in which there are red, thickened areas with silvery scales, often on the scalp, elbows, knees and lower back. Some cases are mild, while others are severe and cover large areas of the body. Psoriasis is not contagious, but sometimes it can be inherited, so there may be a family history.

Allergies
While any eczema may be caused by irritants and severely dry skin, it can also be caused by allergens. After an evaluation with a dermatologist, it may be recommended to have allergy testing done. Sometimes, an inhaled or ingested allergen is suspected and the dermatologist may advise testing done by an allergist (to detect food and environmental allergies, for example). In other instances, an allergen which has come into contact with the skin is suspected (such as nickel or fragrances), and the dermatologist may advise a “patch test.” A panel of the most common skin allergens is applied to the upper back and then the patient returns to the office two to three days later to have the test read. If the dermatologist identifies a positive allergen, simple avoidance of the substance may allow the eczema to completely resolve.
