Arthritis
Total Hip Replacement surgery is a common procedure around the world, with hundreds of thousands performed annually. Hip replacements are done to alleviate pain and disability caused by conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, congenital deformities, fractures, and other hip related problems.
Medical Weight Loss
Even if the pain is significant and the X-rays show advanced arthritis of the joint, the first line of treatment is nearly always non-operative, to include weight loss if appropriate, an exercise regimen, medications, injections, or using a cane. If the symptoms persist despite these measures, then a patient would consider total hip arthroplasty. The decision to move forward with surgery is not always straight forward, and usually involves a thoughtful conversation with yourself, your loved ones, and ultimately your surgeon. The final decision rests with the patient, and is based on the pain and disability from the arthritis influencing the patient’s quality of life and activities of daily living. Patients who decide to proceed forward with surgery commonly report that the symptoms from the hip keep them from participating in activities important to them (i.e. walking, work, sleep, putting on socks and shoes, sitting for long periods of time, etc.), AND have been non-responsive to non-operative measures.

The Anderson Orthopaedic Clinic was founded in 1938 and represents a long-standing tradition of excellence in orthopedic care. Our founding partner, Dr. Otto Anderson Engh, was a polio specialist and knew that he wanted to build the first clinic to fill the void in specialized treatment for crippled children. He went on to work with the Arlington Department of Health, Arlington Hospital Alexandria Hospital and DC General Hospital to develop programs for these children. In the 1940’s he founded what was soon to be known as National Hospital for Orthopedics and Rehabilitation. Dr. Otto Engh was President of the Virginia Orthopaedic Society, District of Columbia Orthopaedic Society and Alexandria Medical Society.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Minimally invasive surgery is a term that today describes a combination of reducing incision length and lessening tissue disruption beneath the incision. This includes cutting less muscle and detaching less tendon from bone. Combined with these techniques are the advanced techniques of anesthesia and pain management that take place around surgery. All of this combines to allow patients to feel better, have less pain, and regain function faster than in the recent past.
Joint Replacement
The Anderson Clinic’s expertise in Joint Replacement is not limited to just the knee and hip. Our fellowship trained Total Shoulder Replacement surgeons offer state-of-the-art treatment for shoulder problems. The primary goal of shoulder replacement surgery is pain relief, with a secondary benefit of restoring motion, strength, function, and assisting with returning patients to an activity level as near to normal as possible.Total Shoulder Replacement is a tremendously successful procedure for treating the severe pain and stiffness that often result at the end stage of various forms of arthritis or degenerative joint disease of the shoulder joint. For patients suffering from shoulder arthritis and damage to the surrounding shoulder muscles, a Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement may be the best option.
Hip Replacement
The immediate benefits of total hip replacement include pain relief and improved function. In most cases a patient can expect to be relatively pain-free have full mobility of his or her hip, and walk with minimal or no limp following recovery. Recovery time has become faster, in recent years, with improved surgical techniques and better methods of pain control of anesthesia. The doctors at the Anderson Clinic are on the cutting edge in developing and utilizing these protocols.
Knee Replacement
Total Knee replacement surgery was first performed in the 1960’s with hinged type of implants that did not work well. The problem was early loosening because a hinge did not permit the natural relation and bending of the knee. These early implants also had high infection rates. In the mid-1970’s better implants, called condylar total knee implants, were designed. They only came in two sizes and were solid pieces. Orthopedic surgeons were cautious about using them because of their experience with hinges, but as good results were recognized, more surgeons performed knee replacement. Implant companies then designed prostheses that were easier to place, as well as better instruments that made the surgery more reproducible. By the nineties, partial and total knee replacement surgery was widely accepted as good operations with excellent pain relief from arthritis.
